Title
buckle frame
Description
English: A copper alloy late Roman to Early Medieval buckle frame, (4th - early 5th century). It is similar to Hawkes and Dunning, 1961: 59, Type IIIA. It is D-shaped, with a thickened outside edge which is faceted. There are animal-head terminals facing each other to either side of the bar, which is narrowed and circular in section. They have dots for eyes and ears which are flattened against the head. The metalwork is pitted and patinated and any other decorative detail is now lost. Along the centre of the ridge on the outside edge there is a short strip of cable decoration. A pin rest is detectable on one side of the loop but the pin is missing. The buckle measures 22.73mm in length, 31.62mm in width and weighs 11.18g. The outside edge of the frame measures 6.3mm in thickness, and the bar is 2.75mm in diameter.

Examples of similar buckle frames on the PAS database can be seen at BERK-D9BAD7 and NCL-2B0E31.
