Summary

[edit]
Description

Church House stands in Church Street, Bradford on Avon. It was built, or rebuilt on the site of an earlier house, in 1730. Pevsner calls it 'stately Georgian, of three wide bays and noble proportions, with a big arched door surround... and a Venetian window over.'

In the nineteenth century the building housed various banks, and it was later the site of a branch of the British School for Girls. In the twentieth century it was apparently owned for a while (though not lived in) by Guy Underwood. He was a solicitor with a passion for archaeology and dowsing; his book, The Pattern of the Past, explaining his controversial theories, was published after his death in 1964.
