Title
bow and fantail brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy Roman bow and fantail brooch fragment. It consists of part of the head, the bow and fantail, and the remains of the catchplate on the reverse. The head loop and pin are missing. The hinge mechanism with semi-cylindrical moulding contains fragments of the bar, and the base of the catchplate is strongly curved round. The bow is flat backed and narrow, with a flat, D-shaped section, and a central rib. It terminates with a triangular 'fantail' the bottom edge of which is uneven with parts missing due to old breaks. The fantail has two curving foliate bands to either side, with the remains, now black, of enamel along both long edges. A tall, narrow triangle is formed beteen them in which there are traces of red enamel, and there are two further triangular fields in which no enamel survives, below this. The brooch measures 14.42mm in width across the head, and 14.17mm across the base of the fantail. It is 34.31mm in length and weighs 5.45g.

Two examples from Dorset with similar decoration are illustrated in Hattatt (BOA, fig.24, nos 817, 818). This type of brooch dates from 50-150 AD.
