for observation purposeshave been erected by the Government atthe highest points, giving birds-eyeviews of the entire battlefield. Over ahundred miles of magnificent roads havebeen constructed, giving easy access toall parts of the battlefield. It is one spot in all America that everyAmerican should visit and that everyoneshould see. The now aged veterans, who will attend their forty-fourth na-tional encampment at Atlantic City inSeptember, have another opportunity tosee the great field. The Baltimore &Ohio Railroad, through its connectionwith the Western Maryland Railway, offers direct access to this great centerof interest. It was a strange decree of fate whichsettled upon Gettysburg, a peaceful, quiet country village, as the scene of oneof the worlds most desperately foughtbattles and the most momentous of thestruggle between the North and theSouth. Nestling on the gentle slopes ofthe placid Blue Ridge, at the base ofSouth Mountain, between the ridges of THE WORLDS GREATEST BATTLE
Text Appearing After Image:
THE WORLDS GREATEST BATTLE 9 Cemetery Hill on the southwest andSeminary Ridge on the west, it is sur-rounded by a cluster of low hills formingthe background of a broad expanse ofrich valleys in a high state of cultivation. Its exact geographical position is aboutseven miles north of the State line divid-ing Maryland and Pennsylvania. The site of Gettysburg was originallylocated by thrifty German colonists in1779 (just three years following theDeclaration of American Independ-ence). The town was founded byJames Getty, in 1780, became thecounty seat of Adams County in1800, and was incorporated in 1807. Itstarted with a handful of residents ina few scattered cottages and shacks, butgrew until at the time of the outbreak ofthe war (1861) it boasted about 1,200inhabitants and about 1,500 at the timethe famous battle was fought. Manyclearly visible marks of the strugglestill remain. An old fence, carefully pre-served, shows hundreds of bullet holes, where riflemen took pot shots at eachother.
