Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bolton: The weather vane on the old hearse house A horse-drawn hearse was purchased in 1783 for use in the village of Bolton, near Haddington and remained in use until c. 1844. The hearse body is decorated with 'MEMENTO MORI', 'HORA FUGIT', a skull and a hour glass. The under-carriage is probably that of a mid 17th Century coach with straked (made in pieces) tyres. The hearse is believed to be the oldest surviving road vehicle in Scotland. http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-000-471-650-C&&scache=1zema6bu14&searchdb=scran The hearse is now on display in the Royal Museum of Scotland, in Edinburgh, but the old hearse house still exists in the graveyard at Bolton Parish Church. This (modern) weather vane is mounted on the gable of the building.
