Description |
English: LIBI_00012_07533; A black-and-white photograph of Big Beaver; holding his scabbard that he used for his knife at the Battle of the Little Bighorn; produced in 1927. The typewritten description reads, "This scabbard, made about 1874, carried the knife of big beaver at Custer’s last battle. He was then age 15. Made of buffalo calf rawhide. The earth colors will not fade in sunshine nor by use of gasoline or hot soapsuds. The four domes represent boyhood coup stokes upon dead enemies: upper dome green interior, coup upon a Crow. Two middle domes, red interior, upon white men. Lower dome, yellow interior upon a Shoshone. The other side has on it, all of these designs. The scalping knife shown in photo is in another case. Big beaver went with me to Custer field August 9-10-11, 1927, and told me of his experiences there in 1876." Signed by Thomas B. Marquis; print, photographic [mounted on card]; Courtesy of the National Park Service, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, LIBI_00012_07533, Thomas
