Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Berwick-upon-Tweed railway station The long island platform of Berwick station — the Up platform (No 1) is seen here from Castlegate across the station car park — is separated from the booking hall and office and can only be reached via a footbridge. The station, at the boundary between the North Eastern Railway of England and the North British Railway of Scotland, was opened in June 1846 but almost 546 years earlier, in November 1292, King Edward I and his full English Parliament had travelled to the spot to declare John Baliol, rather than Robert Bruce, heritor of the crown of Scotland, or so says a sign in the footbridge. At that time, of course, there was a castle here, its remains being largely cleared away to build the railway station.
