Summary
[edit]DescriptionBerkshire pigs - geograph.org.uk - 578139.jpg |
English: Berkshire pigs Sow and piglets. The Berkshire pig is the oldest breed of pig in Britain. It is believed that the breed originates from around Wantage in the Thames Valley and dates back to ca. 1790. According to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust there are just 359 breeding sows and 89 boars left in this country, and only three pig farmers in Berkshire today breed Berkshire pigs. More recently, a number of breeders have developed their own specialised markets for Berkshire pig meat. |
