Description |
Thin eight-ply laminated graphite-epoxy plates of a representative lay-up (0/tolerance 45 degrees/0)(s) were damaged ballistically. The extent of damage varied with impact velocity and impactor mass. Visual and microscopic inspection was augmented by x-ray inspection utilizing a radio-opaque dye, to evaluate the extent of damage area. Specimens were then tested in tension to failure, to evaluate the residual strength. Damage length (in the 0 degree direction) varied with impact velocity, the greatest damage resulting from the lower velocities. Damage width (in the 90 degree direction) was not greatly affected by velocity changes. Variation of impactor mass had little effect. Residual strength as measured by tensile tests in the 0 degree direction was insensitive to damage size effects. Subjects: Aeronautics |
