Anglo-Saxon wrist clasp
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy hookpiece from an early Anglo-Saxon sleeve or wrist clasp. The hook element is incomplete due to an old break now worn. This hookpiece is of Hines form B20, as it has a cast in one plate/bar, a shaped rear edge and sewing holes, which is a diverse group (Hines 1993, 64-65, fig 124). It measures 27.7mm in total length and 14.8mm in total width. The bar is rectangular in shape, 4.5mm in width and has transverse grooves across it. The plate is 9.3mm in width and formed of three co-joined circles, each of which has a ring and dot motif on its front face. The spaces between the first and second and second and third circles next to the bar are roughly circular in shape and would have probably functioned as sewing holes, they do appear worn. The incomplete hook element is rectangular in shape, measuring 12.8mm in length 3.4mm in width, it projects down from the centre of the bars inner edge at an angle of circa 45 degrees.
