Deutsch: Chor Virap ist ein armenisches Kloster, das in der Provinz Ararat etwa 40 km südlich von Jerewan in Sichtweite zur Grenze zur Türkei unterhalb des Berges Ararat liegt.
Der Legende zufolge sperrte König Trdat III. im Jahre 288 n. Chr. Gregor den Erleuchter in eine Höhle ein und hielt ihn dort 13 Jahre lang gefangen, um ihn vom christlichen Glauben abzubringen. Da die Folter Gregor nicht beugen konnte, ließ sich Trdat III. mit seiner Familie und dem Hof im Jahre 301 taufen und verfügte, dass die Armenier – als erstes Volk in der Geschichte – das Christentum als Staatsreligion annahmen.

English: The Khor Virap is an Armenian monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia, near the border with Turkey.
Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here by King Tiridates III of Armenia. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. |
