Description |
English: Admiral Sir Edward Pellew (1757-1833), 1st Viscount Exmouth A three-quarter length portrait, facing to the left, in admiral’s full dress uniform of Edward Pellew, first Viscount Exmouth. His hands are resting on his sword. He wears the ribbon and star of the G.C.B. and the star of St. Ferdinand and Merit. Painted in 1818 it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819. His success as a frigate captain brought him to a responsible position in the Channel Fleet in the early years of the French Revolutionary Wars. While in command of the frigate ‘Indefatigable’ he drove ashore the French ‘Droits de l’Homme’ which was returning home from the abortive expedition against Ireland of 1796-97. He bombarded Algiers in 1816 to secure the release of Christian slaves there. A small stipple of the portrait was engraved by W Holl in 1831. The portrait was painted in about 1817-19. |
