Short Description A visioning session led by architect Douglas Cardinal brought together the Carleton University Aboriginal Community and architecture students as a starting point for the Aboriginal Lounge design. During the visioning session participants from Métis, Inuit and First Nations backgrounds voiced their opinions on what they foresaw the lounge to be. In collaboration with a team the goal was to achieve a welcoming, open concept space, which gave the feeling of a ‘home away from home’ for students. This was achieved through the use of curving forms, materiality, lighting, and use of colour. The slatted wood curved seating element which travels through the lounge creates inhabitable multi-use spaces. Small and large meeting areas,a kitchen area, offices, computer area, and elder room are provided in the design. Four proposals were presented to the Aboriginal group, one of which will be chosen to be built in summer 2012.
