Cheshire, a county palatine, boundedby Lancashire on the north, Shropshireand part of Flint on the south, Derbyshireand Staffordshire on the east and south-east, and Denbighshire and part of Flint-shire on the west and north-west; beingabout 58 miles long and 30 broad : it con-tains 1052 square statute miles, or 673,280statute acres of land, two-thirds of whichare in pasturage, about 200,000 acres arable,and nearly 50,000 acres, including wood-lands, uncultivated. It has one city and12 market-towns, viz. Altrincham, Congleton, Frodsham, Halton, Knutsford, Mac-clesfield, Malpas, Middlewich, Nantwich,Northwich, Sandbach, and Stockport. Itcontains 86 parishes, 670 villages, and458 townships, in which are 47,091 housesand 270,098 inhabitants: of whom 27,105families are employed in trade and ma-nufactures, and 18,120 in agriculture. CHE ENGLAND AND WALES. CHE ty. It lies in the diocese of Chester andprovince of York. The total amount ofsums assessed to the property tax, in 1815,under schedule A, was £10,83,088, and therental of land, £676,864. Amount ofp ors-rates, on an average of 1813-14-15,was £152,807, being at the rate of 2s. 9;d.in the pound, on the amount of the as-sessed property. Average scale of morta-lity for 10 years, as 1 to 55 of the existingpopulation. It is divided into 7 hundreds,viz. Broxton, Bucklow, Eddisbury, Mac-clesfield, Nantwich, Northwich, and Wirrall.Its principal rivers are the Dee, Weever,Mersey, Tame, and Boiling. The first ispartly its western boundary; from Walesit crosses to Chester, and fa41s into the sea,and is navigable from near Ellesmere, inSalop, to Chester. The Weever rises inthe northern part of Salop, crosses themiddle of the county, and falls into theMersey. This river is navigable for ves-sels of 100 tons burden from Winsford toFrodsham.
