first erected by Ethel-dred, king of Mercia, in 680, when it wasa convent of secular priests ; a short timeafter the conquest, it was laid in ashes bythe Welch, but was soon after nearly re-built with greater magnificence, thoughnot entirely completed till the year 1374.It is in length 514 feet, in breadth 78, andthe tower 200 feet high. On the southside is a chapel of most curious workman-ship: both the church and cloisters arearched with stone of a reddish colour;and in the tower are 8 good bells, thelargest weighing 6600 pounds. The win-dow, in the west front, was rebuilt in an e le-gant manner in 1789, in commemorationof the honour of his late majestys visit atthe music meeting in 1788; and in 1792,an elegant window was built, at the eastend of the cathedral, containing some ex-cellent paintings on glass. WOR ENGLAND AND WALES WOR velations. The altar-piece is of stone, per-forated and glazed. The chief monumentin the cathedral is that of king John,standing in the midst of the choir. Oneach side of the king are those of the bi-shops Wolstan and Oswald. On the southside the altar is prince Arthurs sepulchralchapel, a most curious piece of antiqueworkmanship; it was repaired and beau-tified in 1791, and consistsof 5 orders ofimages; viz. virgins, bishops, kings, con-fessors, and angels, ornamented with thevarious badges of royalty : under an archedroof is the tomb of fine marble. Thereare also several other handsome monu-ments, particularly one of Dr. Hough, byRoubiliac. The chapter-house is a largecircular room, standing on the eastern side,60 feet high, the roof renting on a marblepillar; this is now used for a library, andcontains many curious manuscripts; thecloisters, where the monks formerly re-sided, are now inhabited by the dignita-ries of the cathedral; the refectory is usedas a
