Description
English: A new mapp of the island of Bombay and Sallset by Saml Thornton Hydrographer to ye Honoble East India Company; at ye signe of ye Plat in ye Minories London.Single sheet. Engr. Scale: [ca. 1:100 000]. Cartographic Note: North at 270 degrees. Ungraduated plane chart. Latitude noted. Soundings. Scale in English miles. Additional Places: Mumbai, Sallsette. Contents Note: Fishing stakes are shown. Landmark buildings depicted. Sea decorated with an East India Company ship. Above it there is a faint trace of another which has been deleted from the plate. Dedication to the East India Company, surmounted by EIC coat of arms.
From English Pilot, 3rd book, Oriental Navigation by John Seller. Imprint identical with that of 1734 edition (in the Library collection at PBE6888), otherwise chart unchanged since publication in John Thornton's Atlas Maritimus, ca.1685 (in the Library collection at PBD8515 and PBD8516).
