A wiser policy has, however, prevailed in Francesince, the negotiation of the French commercialtreaty and the partial development of the prin-ciples of free trade in that country. BOSTON. A commercial city of the UnitedStates, the capital of Massachusetts, and the largesttown of New England, lat. 42° 23 N, long. 71° 4W. Population in 1860, 177,812. The city issituated on a peninsula near the bottom of a largeand deep bay, being surrounded on all sides bywater, except on the south, where it is joined tothe mainland by the narrow isthmus called BostonNeck. But it communicates, by means of exten-sive wooden bridges, with Charleston on thenorth side of the bay, and with Dorchester on thesouth. BOSTON 189 Lighthouses, Boston Bay.—There are 4 lights :•one on the Minot Ledge, the second on the northentrance of the harbour on Lighthouse Island,the third on the west end of the Spit abreast theNarrows, and the fourth on the north-east end ofLong Island. The second light is revolving, thethird is red. Shipping.—With the exception of New York,Boston has a larger mercantile marine than anyother port in the United States. According to theaccounts laid before Congress January 1,1858, theregistered, enrolled, and licensed tonnage belong-ing to Boston on June 30, 1857, amounted to447,996 tons, of which 42,179 tons were employedin the coasting trade. In 1856, 48 ships, of theburden of 50,394 tons, were launched in Bostonand her immediate vicinity. Since the war, how-ever, the shipping of Boston has been materiallydiminished.
