English: Fake blood
The skin (on the hand) is soaked with concentrated potassium thiocyanate solution using cotton or paper towel. Then a dull knife, previously soaked in iron(III) chloride solution is used to make a fake cut. The knife leaves red trace on the skin that resembles fresh blood. The visual effect is due to a series of complex compounds that form between the Fe 3+ ions from the knife and the SCNˉ ions on the skin: Fe3+ + SCNˉ = FeSCN2+ FeSCN2+ + SCNˉ = Fe(SCN)2+ Fe(SCN)2+ + SCNˉ = Fe(SCN)3 Fe(SCN)3 + SCNˉ = Fe(SCN)4ˉ Performed by the Prof. PhD Miha Bukleski. The planning of the experiment also included the retired Prof. PhD Vladimir Petruševski and the students Mihail Trajkov and Darko Stojčev, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
