Description
English: The most famous Gorkha Regiment in the British Indian Army were the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gorkha Rifles. They had even been presented the Queen's Truncheon by Queen Victoria. After grant of Independence to India, the famed 1st & 2nd Battalions of 2 GR were retained in the Royal Brigade of Gurkhas of the British Army, and were stationed abroad including at Hong Kong, Malaya, Borneo and Falkland Islands. Over a period of time all individual Regiments of the British Gurkha Brigade got amalgamated into the Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) and therefore lost their original identity. The RGR has been reduced to only three Battalions strength at present. However one Battalion of the 2 Gurkha Rifles escaped this fate and has continued as a SIRMOOR RIFLES Battalion, retaining the proud Two Centuries old identity of this great Regiment which has won over 50 Battle Honours! It was the 4/2 Gorkha Rifles, which is now part of the Indian Army's Gorkha Brigade, re-designated as 5/8 GR (THE SIRMOOR RIFLES). It is now a crack Unit, which has a great reputation.

There is the 2 GR Association in the UK, consisting of officers who have served in this elite Regiment, which has won the maximum number of Victoria Crosses. There is also the SIRMOOR RIFLES Association in Nepal whose members are those who have served in this proud Regiment.
