Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Matronae altar (ca. 180 AD) excavated in Bonn Minster, now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn, Germany. The inscription in Latin reads: MATRONIS AVFANIABVS T(itus) STATILIVS PROCVLVS PRAEFECTVS LEG(ionis) I M(inerviae) P(iae) F(idelis) ET SVTORIA PIA EIIVS V(otum) S(olvit) L(ibens) M(erito), which translates as: "To the Aufanian Matronae have Statilius Proculus, prefect of the 1st legion, and his wife Sutoria Pia [dedicated this altar and] fulfilled their promise willingly and fittingly". As a camp commander, Statilius Proculus must have been one of the highest ranking officers in the 1st legion and a member of the nobility. On the back of the altar is a depiction of a tree in a rocky landscape with a bird's nest and a preying snake in it and some pigs lying underneath it, a metaphor for nature at peace and a reference to the early custom to erect matronae altars in woodland. AE 1931, 12 = AE 1932, 8 = AE 1934, 25 = AE 1939, 235: Matronis / Aufaniabus / T(itus) Statilius / Proculus / praefectus / leg(ionis) I M(inerviae) P(iae) F(idelis) et / Sutoria Pia ei{i}us / v(otum) s(olverunt) l(ibentes) m(erito)
