English: Photograph taken at Wilkes Station by Lieutenant Andrew Stanner, 17th Construction Squadron (Royal Australian Engineers) on Voyage 8 of the 1989/88 resupply season ANARE.
Photograph shows diesel oil drums in the foreground, oil spill is visible on the left in the middle distance, the Icebird (ship) is visible at anchor in Vincennes Bay. The new Casey Base is visible on the skyline at the left of the photo in the distance across the bay. |

Photograph was taken while on a reconnaissance conducted over the period 28 Feb to 25 Mar 1988. The reconnaissance indicated that the volume of waste at Wilkes Base at the time was approximately:
- POL (up to 100,000 litres, mainly diesel fuel)
- approximately 300 assorted gas cylinders
- approximately 2 tonnes of caustic soda
- approximately 2 tonnes of ferrous silicate
- a quantity of explosives
