Olds Motor Vehicle Co. was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In 1908 absorbed by General Motors , phased out in 2004. In the 1930s, Oldsmobile sat in the middle of GM’s lineup, less expensive than Buick or Cadillac, but ahead of Pontiac and Chevrolet. In 1939 the GM-A body Series F was renamed the Series 60 and the larger GM-B body Series L was renamed either the 6 cyl Series 70 or 8 cyl Series 80. 1939 also saw a new look at the front, with square grilles under the headlights. The Series 60 115 inch wheelbase, 90hp 216 cu in 6 cyl The Series 70 120 inch wheelbase, 95hp 230 cu in 6 cyl The Series 80 120 inch wheelbase, 110hp 257 cu in 8 cyl The Oldsmobile was also imported into Australia from 1901-23. From 1923-48, General Motors Holden, built their own bodies on fully imported chassis form the US (front sheet-metal was attached). Tourers and Sloper coupes which ran from 1935 thru 1940 are two of the models unique to Australia, never seen in the US. This is one of those Australian built cars, only five of these Roadsters were built at Holden's Adelaide factory. |
