Description |
English: [The Battle of the Glorious First of June, 1794:] Lord Howe engaging the French Fleet under Adm Villaret on the 29th May Vignette from the 'Naval Chronicle' (1799) f. p. 24. Howe's 'Queen Charlotte' is shown on the starboard tack with double-reefed topsails and flying the Union flag (as Commander-in-Chief) at the main, leading through the French line. She is followed by Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Pasley's 'Bellerophon', raking the French to both sides. The engagement of 29 May was Howe's first inconclusive encounter with Villaret's fleet as they manoeuvred for position some 300 miles west of Ushant, before the full engagement of 1 June. The print is the first of over sixty that Pocock did for the ‘Naval Chronicle’, from this first issue until 1813, and also the first battle illustration in this long-running journal. |
