Summary
[edit]Description'The Ruin', Hackfall - geograph.org.uk - 638612.jpg |
English: 'The Ruin', Hackfall, near to Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire, Great Britain.
From below, this looks like a ruin on the hilltop above the woods, and this was the intention when it was built in the 18th century. The Ruin is also known as Mowbray Point [which is where it stands] and sometimes as The Banqueting Hall as this was its function. Built by William Aislabie with an 18th century stone front and a 'romantic ruin' to the rear, and used for the entertaining of visitors to his estate. The building became a real ruin after many decades of neglect, but was restored by the Landmark Trust between 2002 & 2004, and can now be rented as a holiday cottage with a difference. |
