Lt James Henry Butt |
Description |
English: 'Nibukawa (Inland Sea, Japan)' No. 45 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, as title. The Nibukawa valley lies inland in the modern Ehime prefecture, in the northern part of Japanese island of Shikoku. The enclosed waters known overall as the Inland Sea lie on all sides except south, but at a considerable distance, with Imabari to the north-east being the nearest major coastal town. It remains an area of natural beauty with a river and a substantial lake for those seeking country enjoyment. At this date, however, Butt must have made a considerable effort to get there from the coast. In his view of the rocky river torrent a man is fishing on the right, with a levelled-up roadway leading to a wooden bridge beyond. |
