| Description |
English: 'Nagasaki' [Japan] No. 18 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page 'Nagasaki', and dated '7/68'. Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture, in the extreme south-west of the main Japanese island of Kyushu. It has a very long natural harbour, orientated approximately north-north-east to south-south-west. This view appears to overlook the town from the south, up the east side of the harbour. Western ships are in the bay and warehouses on the waterfront. A small burial plot is on the right, amid the agricultural terracing of the hillside in the immediate foreground. Originally a fishing village, Nagasaki became a significant site of Portuguese missionary and trade activity in the 1540s, which formed the basis of its expanding importance into the 19th century: it became a free port in 1859. Through this period it was Japan's principal though not sole gateway to Western trade and under the Meiji restoration from 1868 it became a centre of heavy industry and a major Japanese naval base. |
