licensing

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I wonder if it is possible to release the text of a story under a less restrictive license than CC-By-SA 3.0 (say, CC0) if all the involved media is also of similar licensing? Arlo James Barnes 23:32, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Arlo James Barnes, for your question. For now, we will be using the licenses for the original content the way it is, but we plan to explore other options around Wikistories soon. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The prototype invites you to copy text from Wikipedia, so there's no way around the CC-BY-SA. I didn't see any author's list though. What if people edit the text? What if you want to copy text from another article than the one you started the Story on? What if you write your own text, where will you get credited for that? Also, where is the text stored and will it be accessible to the tools people use for vandalism protection and copyright patrolling? El Grafo (talk) 16:20, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Where will the stories be stored?

[edit]

I've played around with the prototype on beta for a bit. I'm a bit confused: You call it "Wikistories on Commons", but it seems like the stories are going to be stored on Wikipedia rather than on Commons? El Grafo (talk) 16:15, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello El Grafo,
Sorry about the confusion; the prototype on beta is the Wikistories workflow in Wikipedia. The Inuka team has not developed the "Wikistories on Commons" workflow. We just rounded up our office hours with the WikiCommons community to share our design exploration and allow the community to ask questions, get their feedback, and get some insights before we start developing the Wikistories on Commons.
In other words, the Wikistories on Wikipedia workflow is the one you tried out the prototype in beta, and the Wikistories with an entry point on Commons will have a different workflow that has not been developed. Also, the Wikistories created in Commons can be attached to a Wikipedia article, like you can use photos in Wikipedia.
Thank you for asking this question, and I hope my answer is clear enough. Please, feel free to ask further questions.
Best regards

@UOzurumba (WMF) Thanks, that much clearer now! It makes mo wonder: where/how will the stories be stored on Commons? Will it be wikitext that can be edited as source code? Which namespace will it be in? Do you plan to use the existing main (gallery) namespace or introduce a new one? Maybe even revive the long-fortgotten Sequence: namespace? El Grafo (talk) 08:04, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Our current design is to store stories as structured data (json) in the Story namespace with custom editors. We are open to feedback about this. SBisson (WMF) (talk) 13:58, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing

[edit]

I created a Wikistory on w:id. Claims in the story aren’t referenced, but it is linked to the article, which does have references. And creators are encouraged to base their stories on article content. (There is still scope for abuse with alternate truth – fake facts – disinformation – propaganda.) Stories on Commons wouldn't have the encyclopedic backing, so how do creators support their claims? Pelagic (talk) 19:37, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
