Translation of the Projectside in your language

@Albinfo, William Ellison, Rc1959, Cquoi, Adamant1, and N.Longo: Happy New Year to all! When I had start this project in March 2020, it was clear for me that this project-page has to be multilingual. Today I make the change to this. Commons make it possible and easy to translate this page for you. Please help with the translation in your favourite languages. So more people can read this page and join our project. Best regards --sk (talk) 17:00, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

@Stefan Kühn: Bón ànno nêuvo! At the moment I'm a bit busy irl, anyway I'm going to translate the project page in the next month (in Italian), best regards! --N.Longo (talk) 15:44, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
@Stefan Kühn: Frohes neues Jahr und herzlichen Glückwunsch zu deiner Arbeit Cquoi (talk) 17:41, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Showing both sides

I just read Commons:WikiProject_Postcards#Examples_for_both_sides.

If you would upload it as PDF, you could show both sides in one document.

It would be great to have such a multi-page option for other document formats like JPG or TIF too.

Maybe we should request an extension allowing to show several sides/pages of a document in the same file. --Albinfo (talk) 11:27, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Example of postcard in PDF
At the moment I think Wikimedia Commons is a tool that best work with single files of every side of a postcard. It is a little bit more work for us, but it is also better to use in articles. Many postcards are uploaded by users with not so much experience. So it should be easy to do. But be free to ask for technical extensions. --sk (talk) 18:30, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
That was the solution I was thinking about – but preferably as JPG and not as PDF. And maybe the option to switch pages could be displayed a little bit more userfriendly. --Albinfo (talk) 13:39, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
@Albinfo: Today I found the file again. The File:Rathausplatz_in_Stettin.djvu is in DjVu. Maybe this is a solution. --sk (talk) 12:16, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
DjVu is and quite old file format and not widely supported Dignus est intrare (talk) 12:31, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
DjVu as alternative to PDF – more or less with the same aim. --Albinfo (talk) 16:41, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

For a better overview I create Category:Postcards by file format. --sk (talk) 11:17, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Tool postcardcatfinder

Version 0.1

@Albinfo, William Ellison, Rc1959, Cquoi, Adamant1, and N.Longo: Hello again, in the last month I wrote a tool postcardcatfinder.toolforge.org. Now I go in Beta. And you are welcome to test and check this tool. I test it with many postcards and love it. It help me easy to find the best category for a postcard. See this example. The tool find by "Category:Matsuyama Castle (Iyo)" and with the Wikidata-Item of this castle, it will found the right categories under "Postcards of Japan". In Japan it find prefecture, in Germany Landkreise or in USA county. I test it with all this Zeno-postcards and many postcards of Netherlands and now USA. - This tool don't set the categories. You can use Hotcat or Cat-a-lot. - Please give me feedback or ask questions. Later I will write a documentation. --sk (talk) 20:08, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Tried it with a few cards. Seems to work well, when it is connected with a town.
No suggestions for File:1893PostkarteKST.jpg – probably because it is only in a building category? --Albinfo (talk) 16:07, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
@Albinfo: Yes. The progress is:
  1. read all categories
  2. filter unusable categories (Like "Category:Uploaded by User:XYZ")
  3. normalize catname (like "Building of Berlin" normalized to "Berlin")
  4. check for catname in Wikidata and find Wikidataitem
  5. find higher administrative units (Dresden --> Saxony --> Germany)
I will check pageid 83505140. I think it should work in future. --sk (talk) 18:01, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
@Albinfo: I fix the problem. Normally is the text "Buildings in <city>" but in your example was a "of" and not a "in". Easy to fix. But I change only the pattern for buildings. --sk (talk) 21:47, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
Within Category:Albania, there are many sub-categories labeled "Something of Albania". --Albinfo (talk) 21:51, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Version 0.2

Hello again. I improve the tool. Now it is able to catch Structure data (only "depicts") from the image and make more checks for the categories. If you add a SDC to the image, then the tool will better find the right postcard category. I think it work very good. So I updated the tool on toolserver. Let me know I you see bugs. Here an example.--sk (talk) 19:27, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Postcards of Russian Empire

@Gandvik: Many thanks for your translation of the project page into Russian. Great work. Also I am happy about so many postcards from Russia. - I see one problem. The name of many categories are not like the standard in our project. IMHO 155 categories should be renamed. For example Category:Donec Tower on postcards of Russian Empire should renamed to Postcards of Donec Tower. Can you describe for me why it is important to add "of Russian Empire". If I upload a postcard of this tower from Sovjet Union time or from today Russia, everytime I had to create new categories. I think it would very usefull when we rename this categories. Maybe we could add also time-categorie to this postcards. What do you think? --sk (talk) 16:37, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi, Stefan!

""Maybe we could add also time-categorie to this postcards."" There is a problem here . On the example of postcards of Smolensk, only one publisher (7% of postcards) indicated dates. Most of the postcards of Smolensk on Commons are dated "before 1917", it simply means "this is a postcard of the Russian Empire". In the capital cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg), the situation is better, but only slightly. There is a category Category:Postcards of Russia by year, but in the "before 1917" it will be very empty. Most of these postcards will not be classified "by year" (also "by decade"). Actually, the category "... on postcards of Russian Empire" is for them the "time-category", which is possible. I tried to get data from paper catalogs, but the situation is the same there.
"Can you describe for me why it is important to add "of Russian Empire"". Yes, I can. The Russian Empire is a former country. There are Wikipedia many articles about her. There is a category on Wikimedia Commons that includes standard subcategories ("Culture of Russian Empire", "Art of Russian Empire", "Society of Russian Empire" etc.), including a category Category:Postcards of the Russian Empire - this is unavoidably. With approximately 100,000 postcards issued in the Russian Empire, this category requires further categorization. (by region, city, subject, etc.) - this is also unavoidably. How deep this categorization will be is a topic for discussion. I agree with you that in the category of Smolensk postcards, I started dividing into postcards of the Russian Empire for too small objects for which this does not need to be done. This can be fixed. I'll do it in the next few days.
But the problem remains: How to bring together the categories of postcards of former and modern countries? How to do this by subjects? How to do this by geographical subjects?
I looked at Category:Postcards of Germany. It's a good work! A neat structure of categories by year and by region. It's great. This will easy to making the category "Postcards of the German Empire" for Category:German Empire selecting the categories of the necessary years in it and adding from Category:Postcards of former German territorries and maybe something else. For postcards of the Russian Empire, such a path is impossible, since most of the postcards are not dated by years, as I said above. We can discuss it here. --Gandvik (talk) 19:24, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@Gandvik: At the moment my focus is at the location of a postcard, not on time. Therefor I use only the newest country. I will not create a Category:Postcad of German Empire, but I know we have some of this categories with older territories. (like Category:Postcards of former German territorries). But I am not happy with this fact. - When I found an old postcards from german village in now Poland, then I set the categories for the current Powiat in Poland. - For your old postcard I will prefer a catname like
I dont have a problem with "Russian Empire" or other times. I only want to prefer the standard "Postcards of ...". --sk (talk) 16:44, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Tools for showing georeferenced Postcards/Media from Commons

Which tools do you use to display georeferenced postcards? --Dignus est intrare (talk) 13:56, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

I like the tool Wikimap. It has many options, see this docu
You can say how deep subcategories can be scanned. What do you want? --sk (talk) 14:22, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Are referenced object positions also displayed there? --Dignus est intrare (talk) 14:59, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
I think it shows only the object-coordinates. But if you set camera-coordinates, then the marker change the direction. Like in the Example above with Chartlottenburg. --sk (talk) 18:59, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
How would you georeference postcards with more than one image? Dignus est intrare (talk) 18:12, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
@Dignus est intrare: I use the Commons:Locator-tool. There you can insert a category and can start the georeferencing. --sk (talk) 14:27, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Name for category

I search a good name for all not rectangle shaped postcards.

what is your favorite? -- sk (talk) 11:48, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

I would agree with "Postcards with irregular shape". Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:00, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. --sk (talk) 08:51, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

German description

Hi Stefan. I am currently uploading postcards made by a German store in Smolensk. Please check my text in the "Description" field in German. I don't really trust machine translation and not sure of the words: "Postkartenserie ..." and "Veröffentlichung des ...". Other postcards in this series will be described similarly. Thanks. --Gandvik (talk) 19:02, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

@Gandvik: IMHO it is ok. Funny part of the text "Schreibwaarengeschäft". The "aa" is a missspelling. Correct is "Schreibwarengeschäft". --sk (talk) 06:58, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

The category hierarchy

Hi @Albinfo: , @Rc1959: , @Actia Nicopolis: , @Jjjiijjj: , @Cquoi: , @Smiley.toerist: , @Leyo: and to anybody else interested by the project !

There are one or two organisational points to discuss which are not very clear to me and probably to other editors also.

Checkmark This section is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, replace this template with your comment. --sk (talk) 08:54, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Postcards sent by/to ...

We have Category:Postcards sent by Karl May‎ and also Category:Postcards sent to Max Welte‎. And I found this Postcard from Dali to Picasso. I search a good name for the top category maybe Category:Postcards sent by/to person. Any good other ideas? --sk (talk) 08:54, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

I create also a Category:Postcards and people. --sk (talk) 09:00, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Import from flickr ?

I would like to import postcards from GPMetropole Flickr . What do you think please ? Thanks. Rc1959 (talk) 01:19, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

@Rc1959: Just do it! I count arround 2700 images. Great! Please add a category under "Category:Postcards by source" maybe Category:Postcards from gpmetropole or under "Category:Postcard collections" maybe Category:Postcard collection gpmetropole. And very important under Category:Postcard a new Category:Postcard needing categories requiring human attention so we can better work together to add good categories to all of this new postcard images. --sk (talk) 05:55, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer.
I tried with the tool https://flickr2commons.toolforge.org : The user gpmetropole did not set the license so when searching for "Commercial use & mods allowed" license filter, as indicated on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Flickr2Commons, it does not return anything. Also, when loading everything, it just takes the 70 files of the first tag which is "ablon" (a city in France).
I tried with Wizard/Flickr but I am not an "autopatrolled user", and it can load only 50 pages at a time.
Any suggestion, please ? Thanks. Rc1959 (talk) 10:46, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
@Rc1959: You have so many edits on commons. You can easy request the "patrol" mark. Commons:Requests for rights#Patroller. --sk (talk) 06:22, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. I did and it was accepted. Now, unfortunately, when uploading this Flick album, I get an error message window saying "There was an error in your submission : Unfortunately, no image in the photoset has a license appropriate to be used on this site." Rc1959 (talk) 13:17, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
@Rc1959: This is bad. When I look at this image, I see "Uploaded on March 31, 2017 © All rights reserved". So the uploader at flickr choose this bad license! I think this is mostly en:Copyfraud. But the tool will every time check for the right license. You can only manually download this images. --sk (talk) 16:17, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

Map postcards

@Adamant1: You create the Category:Postcards of maps. But we have alredy Category:Map postcards. When I create this category 2019, I make a little research for the right name. I think both categories stand for the same postcards. You agree? Can I insert a cat_rediret to "Map postcards"? --sk (talk) 12:12, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

@Adamant1: --sk (talk) 15:28, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Sure. That's fine. I didn't realize there was Category:Map postcards already. --Adamant1 (talk) 03:28, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Postcard reverses

@Mewa767:

Hello Mewa767 you create this categories. I think we don't need this categories. It is easy to filter with Category:Address sides of divided back postcards and Category:Address sides of undivided back postcards. For example for the town Dresden:

What did you think. Can I delete this categories? I will remove the images back to "Postcards of ..."! --sk (talk) 12:13, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

@Mewa767: --sk (talk) 15:29, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Also Category:Postcard reverses of Bensheim-Auerbach. --sk (talk) 06:40, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Better name for category

Rundschau vom Pöhlbergturm

I found some postcards with a panoramic view from montains in Germany. See Category:Rundschau postcards. I don't know a good english name for this category. The german word "Rundschau" meens "All-round view" or "Panoramic view". Any ideas for a better name? --sk (talk) 11:58, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Batch or bulk update of SDC for postcards

Hello there. I wanted to know if anyone has tried to update the SDC for postcards via batch or bulk editing tools (eg. Open Refine etc.)? If not, would it be good idea to use it? Asking this for Postcards of India in specific. Let me know. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 04:06, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

@DesiBoy101: I have experience with QuickStatements in Wikidata, but I never try this in commons. I know we need in the future all infos in SDC. So I think it is a good idea to update this with via batch and bulk editing tools. What information do you want update in the images (depicts, year, ...)? Best regards. --sk (talk) 15:29, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
sk: I was thinking to update details based on SDC that you've shared before. Although, keeping the long term aspect in mind, it would be helpful to have a template of what information we would like to add in the SDC. Bringing in this discussion as well in the loop, let's have inputs from project members and finalize a draft SDC so that it can be replicated across all postcards. What do you think?
