Messed up file name
Semi-strange phenomenon
Not sure why various Spanish-speakers have seen this page as appropriate to post press-releases on upcoming books or movies, or their mini-biographies... AnonMoos (talk) 19:58, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well Spanish Wikipedia doesn't have local uploads, so its Toolbox link "Subir un archivo" (upload a file) points to the Commons Upload Wizard. Once here, users are stuck if they don't want to actually upload a file, and Commons:Upload help is then the natural outlet for the inexperienced. It's partly because of this that I created {{Commons is not for articles}}, to make it easier to point users back in the right direction. In theory we could fiddle with the UploadWizard header that points here to warn users and point them back straight away, but I'm reluctant to make the notice any bigger. Rd232 (talk) 20:12, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- Also, some posts might be copyright violations. For example, Special:PermanentLink/87146138 is very similar to [1]. It might be a good idea to delete some revisions. --Stefan4 (talk) 21:01, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Can deal with the actual upload questions, but am really getting tired of the Spanish-language cut-and-pastes... AnonMoos (talk) 09:17, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
Special:Upload
I don't know if this is the right place for this. I am not looking for help, but I have an explanation for why many editors (including myself, more than once) can find uploads so difficult.
Put yourself in the position of an editor trying to do their first upload. You have read all the stuff about copyright and licences, so you run the Upload Wizard. Here are your thoughts, as you go through the form filling in the fields
- Destination filename: "That's easy."
- Original source: "The wizard has filled this in for me, and it's got it right!"
- Author(s): "And it's done this one! I like this wizard!"
- Date of the work: "That's easy."
- Description: "I can manage this."
- Other versions: "I guess it's ok if I leave this blank."
- Permission: "I'm glad I read all that stuff about giving permission for my work to be used freely. I'll put CC-BY-SA-3.0."
- Additional info: "I'll leave this blank."
- Licensing: "The wizard has filled this in for me - fine."
So you hit the "Upload file" button, and get an error message "You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license."
This message is not helpful. You have specified all three. The first time I did an upload and got this message, I thought "maybe it doesn't like CC-BY-SA-3.0. I'll try putting double braces around it, {{CC-BY-SA-3.0}}". Maproom (talk) 20:22, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Slight correction - you're referring to Special:Upload, not the Upload Wizard. Rd232 (talk) 20:36, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. I must admit I was using Special:Upload yesterday and had a distinctly unpleasant "this is harder than it should be" feeling. One minor tweak that would help is moving Additional Info to the bottom, because it comes with the Edittools which are quite big and distracting. (It would also be nice to have a smaller version of the Edittools for the form - most of it is irrelevant there.) Rd232 (talk) 20:36, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Finally - if you have concrete suggestions, COM:VPR might be a better place for discussion. Rd232 (talk) 20:36, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- You are right, I meant Special:Upload, thank you. And it is indeed confusing to have the Edittools positioned so that they act on the fourth input box above them - but this is fairly harmless.
- However, all I have done is find my way through this maze, for one particular purpose. This does not qualify me to advise on moving the baffles. Maproom (talk) 15:19, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Why does the page keep circling and returning to the home page, I didn't understand all this. Just want upload a photo that's all. Uhwagini (talk) 18:29, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
What help page to link
I came here because Special:UploadWizard links to this help page. I am a bit puzzled as the help page I use to direct Swedish newcommers to is Commons:Bybrunnen, which works well as far as I understand.
The first thing is that the newcomer is met by quite technical instructions starting with a disclaimer, followed by questions and answers in English. It is not at all clear that one is supposed to the language one is most comfortable with. How about answering questions? I was not aware of the page, is it watchlisted by some frequent contributors knowing Swedish? --LPfi (talk) 17:39, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- (Seems I was blind, LX is apparently active here. Should others be notified? --LPfi (talk) 17:42, 4 March 2016 (UTC))
- Hej LPfi! Yes, I'm watching both Commons:Bybrunnen and this page, and I'm happy to switch to Swedish if needed. If you want that text to be changed to point to Bybrunnen instead, you can request it at Template talk:Upload Help notice. —LX (talk, contribs) 20:22, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- I am not sure. The page should be the one where leaving a question is the easiest and getting an answer most probable. As I have been lazy to check Commons lately, I cannot say for sure which is better for the latter, and for the former one should ask newcommers (at "skrivstugor"?). --LPfi (talk) 12:24, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Unidentified contributions
@Pokéfan95 and Thibaut120094: what's the best current practice wrt unidentified contributions, delete, rescue, some mixture? –Be..anyone 💩 07:26, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Be..anyone: If the "unidentified contributions" you're saying are off-topic messages (including spam), just remove those messages, in my opinion. ★ Poké95 07:30, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

- I'm sorry, but that makes no sense at all. Please rephrase it, or feel free to ask your question in a language that you're more comfortable with. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:11, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
