Licensing problems

[edit]

How are these images public domain? Were they not marked as copyrighted when created/published? Unless the artists were government employees (as opposed to contractors), this is the only plausible route I can see to them being PD. These are modern artworks by unknown artists, and presumably NARA has no rights to them. Even the donor would not have had the rights, unless they explicitly purchased the copyrights as well as the physical artworks (sale of an original artwork does not equate to sale of a copyright). Or this/these (basically the same photo).
and
. These are blatant copyright violations as derivative works. I tagged them as copyvio, but they were not deleted. I think there needs to be some review of files in this category, or Commons must change their terms to accept derivative works. Simply because they're tagged as PD by the NARA doesn't mean we change the terms on Commons... Oaktree b (talk) 15:21, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing problems too

[edit]

Clicking on the NARA link from File:PHELPS DODGE CORPORATION'S DOUGLAS SMELTER - NARA - 543985.tif, I see the following "use restriction" note: "EPA has specified that images are not to be used for advertising purposes. Rights purchased by EPA from photographers." What does it actually mean ?--Zolo (talk) 07:26, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can we add a search box to look only in the NARA category: Oaktree b (talk) 15:14, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The incategory: search keyword doesn't work since the images are not categorized directly but indirectly by a template. Searching for the template's name also doesn't seem to work. We can use e.g. google: Search with google (replace "foobar" with your search terms). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:16, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
