Access to my votes after the deadline

Hi all,

I've voted on images in a couple campaigns using Montage now, Wiki Loves Earth Bangladesh an Wiki Loves Pride 2019. Why am I unable to access my votes afterwards? I was surprised to be unable to access WLE afterwards, but being unable to access WLP is proving problematic. The reasons are complicated, but I need to see the subset of images I upvoted. On the Montage page, the campaign is still there, but my mouse cursor is a red circle with a line through it, not letting me click. Why is this the case, and how do I get around it? — Rhododendrites talk17:26, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, I believe that you can't access your votes, because the second round of the Wiki Loves Pride 2019 campaign has started. You can ask any of the campaign coordinators (not me, as I only set up the campaign and don't know any specifics) if they may share with you the log file that contains all grades by all jurors. Then you will see your grades. --Alexander 17:51, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
@Atsirlin: Thanks, but I guess I'm more interested in why that's the case. Why remove the function to be able to see one's own votes? BTW pings don't work unless you use a standard signature (I presume it's because you don't link to your userpage). — Rhododendrites talk21:40, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
I don't know, I am not the developer, but my experience of a WLM organizer tells me that only coordinators may be interested in individual votes after the end of the voting round. And they still have an opportunity to see the results by exporting them into a csv-file. If you find it important for jurors to see their votes as well, please, feel free to submit a feature request at Github, although I have to admit that it may not be processed any time soon, because there is not much development going on at the moment.
PS. I am aware about my signature, and it is intentionally designed like that. I am watching this page (and that's pretty much the only page I watch on Commons), so you can be sure that I will see your response, with or without the ping. --Alexander 23:46, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Urgent: Wiki Loves Pride Montage campaign link/tool not working

Hello @Atsirlin, hope you are well. Wiki Loves Pride 2019 link seems to show error and is creating issues for the ongoing jury work with our main jury. Can you please look into this as priority. Appreciate it. Wikilover90 (talk) 18:23, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

The same for Wiki Science Competition and the very critical last phase of Wii Loves Classics. It's an internal server error. I waited to write here but after almost one day I fear it is critical. Let us know if there are developments--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:28, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Wikilover90, Alexmar983, Toolserver seems to be too slow today. We have to wait until it improves. --Alexander 21:13, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
now it's better. So far only one juror has issue, it was luck.--Alexmar983 (talk) 22:04, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Sweden Montage setup

Hello! @Atsirlin, I am the coordinator of the Swedish Jury and it would be great to get a montage setup for us. Note that it ran on two campaigns (that are being judged by the same jury, ie. can be merged in the tool, we don't need two separate ways to judge them.) Ainali (talk) 21:10, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

I hope the start date indicate start date of jury work, at least that's what I meant for Sweden. Ainali (talk) 08:13, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Problems

Hi @Atsirlin: I tried to create the first round of the Italian contest, but when I try to "Add Round" compares an error message: Internal server error [...] Multiple rows were found for one_or_none [...]. Could you please help me? Thank you in advance. --CristianNX 17:32, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

I am afraid I can't say anything without knowing what you are actually trying to do. Import files from a category? From a list? --Alexander 20:37, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
@Atsirlin: Importing from a category, the one of WLE images from Italy: Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Italy. --CristianNX 15:22, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
I had no problem importing this category. You can check round 1 that I created; it includes the filter by resolution but no other filter. You can try to pause this round, replace the jurors, and re-activate. If it does not work, please delete this round and create it anew with the correct jurors. --Alexander 23:21, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
@Atsirlin: Thank you very much for creating the round. Unfortunately I still have the same problem when I try to edit it adding the jurors and modifying the date. I don't really understand what it's happening! Can I send you an e-mail to ask you to add the other round details? I hope it will work when I will move to the second round. Let me know, and thank you in advance. --CristianNX 19:53, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

@Alexmar983: not sure for your specific case, but I can quote @Effeietsanders: from a mail on wikilovesmonuments@lists.wikimedia.org « Note that your jury instance can (I think?) not be created until the competition is finished. After that, please give a reasonable amount of time for a volunteer to pick up the task. Please don't assume that you can start voting right away, but assume a day or 2-3 of buffer. » Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 18:14, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I was quite sure last year or two years ago I had it few days before and I started right away. Whatever. I have no deadline, it's a parallel competition :D but I always like to start quickly.--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:19, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I appreciate the excitement! :) Effeietsanders (talk) 22:41, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
We finished and some jurors as usual were too rigid randomly. I would like an additional parallel campaign WLM Tuscany for repêchage if possible. it's something I always wanted to do and I think this year I am ready to test it. Can I have another one?--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:11, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
Ok we will do it maunally but I cannot re-update a campaign, I still need another one to import files as a list merging the ones saved with the one selected. In one week I will have the result from the second round, I need another campaign named maybe "final" where I can import files as a list.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:17, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi Alexmar, just want to let you know I saw your request and am consulting the others how to shape this. Ciell (talk) 21:37, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Alexmar983, do you still need this additional campaign? We were just wondering why you choose this approach of overriding the juror's opinion instead of convincing jurors to change their grades. My own experience tells me that the jurors who did not support a photo in the first round are very unlikely to change their mind and become positive about it in the next round... --Alexander 11:29, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
I have never seen this ping. In any case, I am using now an old unused campaign for the repechage of files from the first rounds (at this point, also the files from the second one, since we are here, why not) but yes, I need a new one. I have to add the recovered files in the selected list for the third round. If I don't get one, I will delete the campaign I am using and put all there.
There is no way you can "change" the vote in this case. With 1000s of images they cannot scroll, it's impossible to coordinate and less time consuming to just do it again with another portion of jurors. Last year we kept the campaign open for 2 days at the second round so people could vote again to balance the fluctuation and see the overall effect... it worked but it was complicated, so I know what I am talking about. it takes me and them the same time, but this actually works better.
All jurors are informed, even the one that for some reason decided to remove all files of artworks in a sample where 50% of them is artwork. The point here is that they are not giving a real evaluation, they were required to take into account the whole sample, they were told to focus on a certain quota of removed files and some of them decided not to. We agreed that someone else should. This has nothing to do with their strong opinion per se, when everybody vote EACH file they are welcome to give 0, but not before: it gives a terribly unbalanced output, and we are very open showing results to all uploaders, who are frustrated because of that. I have been training for years jurors to balance their approach at the beginning, it's better they realize how time consuming is to fix the situation when they do not follow such simple good sense. To me, it's a good investment of time. Next year I will increase the jurors per file of the first step, it takes the same time than revoting or repechaceg but these effects would be much weaker and we could gear them.
For some reason people use Montage to get faster to the winners, but a good selection requires homogeneous output. It does not matter if a certain file will not be a winner, I know that, it's just that removing a decent file keeping a worse one upset uploaders and confuses the scale of the jurors, and even alters the selection of the really best files at the end. I need some of them to learn to stop being simplistic and to remove files "because it will never win". This year they will learn so.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:08, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
I just created another campaign for Toscana. --Alexander 07:11, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you @Atsirlin: , I am doing exactly that, "finalize" and then it starts Round 3, but when I click on Add Round, it brings that error message.

@Ciell: Thank you for looking into this, is there any updated on this, is there any alternative way to go about it? Is it possible to set up a new campaign and use the results of round 1 and 2 to set up the final round?
@Kateregga1: I have been trying different options, but seem to get nowhere. I'll need one of the montage devs to look into this, I'm sorry. I am trying to push this forward again though, because I can only imagine how impatient your jurors must be getting by now... Ciell (talk) 16:51, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Hey Alexander, I have an odd request. Is it possible to run two jury round similtaneously? On the Wiki Loves Africa jury campaign that you set up we are currently on round 3. The international jurors are just getting started reviewing this round. However, as organisers, Anthere and I would like to look thorough the same dataset and select candidates for communications purposes and use the results of that review separately (but it should not impact on the existing international jury review). We are unsure how to do this (or if it can be done). Please let me know! Thanks!! Islahaddow (talk) 08:17, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Islahaddow, no, it's not possible. Only one grading process at a time. --Alexander 11:08, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Hey Alexander, me again ... we have closed the final rating round on Montage, but I asked the jurors to leave motivations for the final choices, how do I access these? It is not on the results page when I open the .csv results in Open Office? I was under the impression jurors could submit a motivation, am I wrong? Islahaddow (talk) 15:52, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Islahaddow, I don't think it is possible to leave comments in the current version of Montage. There was a vague plan of adding this option. --Alexander 16:23, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Can you help me find a solution for this? Thank you Wikilover90 (talk) 16:12, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

It means that you have a duplicate entry. You have to find and exclude it. However, it may be easier to import from a category, then no duplicate entries should occur. --Alexander 06:31, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Hello Atsirlin! Thank you for your advise. I have been trying to set up the campaign using the Category but the same issue keeps coming up.. Is there any way to solve this? I fear we won't be able to set the campaign otherwise. Thank you! Wikilover90 (talk) 19:25, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello Atsirlin! I hope you are well. I have tried looking for an answer on duplicate entry. We are trying to import from the category but it is creating the same issue. Can you please help. I don't know what I can do at this point. No one knows what can be the solution for this. The only thing I see is that we won't be to use Montage for this contest of we are unable to find any solution. Please help!? 14:13, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Hey @Atsirlin/Alexander, there seems to be a problem with the voting for Guinea on Montage. I wonder if it is possible to talk to you about how this might have happened? Obviously, I cannot see the contest as I was not assigned to it. From what I can understand given the .csv of results supplied by Aboubacarkhoraa is the following ... the whole category (Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 in Guinea) amounts to 643 images, however in the .csv of the 1st round, only 185 images were reviewed and are listed. If this is the case, it might be better to just start from the beginning. Is it possible to please reload this category as a separate contest and place myself as an organiser along with Aboubacarkhoraa and @Fatima, so that I can monitor this second round of judging. Thank you so much, Islahaddow (talk) 09:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Islahaddow, yes, you had 458 files disqualified by minimal resolution (2 MPx). Are you sure you need to review these files? It would be a shame to consider such low-res files as potential winners? I added you to the campaign, so you can take a look yourself. --Alexander 09:29, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Heya!! Okay - that would explain it. Let me chat with the team and see what can be done. We have a slight lost in translation issue. Thank you so much for the explanation. Is that an automatic thing in Montage? Islahaddow (talk) 09:55, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
It's one of the options. You can change it at your will. --Alexander 10:31, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Wiki Loves México 2020

Hi!

I am coordinating the contest Wiki Loves Mexico and I would like request the creation of a campaign for jury on Montage. The contest will be ending the in May 31. We are working with five categories, there are two evaluation phases and different coordinators, so will be several people evaluating the photos. I would greatly appreciate your help. --Claudia Muñoz (WMMX) (talk) 19:03, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Claudia Muñoz (WMMX), here you go. --Alexander 08:12, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you Alexander! --Claudia Muñoz (WMMX) (talk) 00:38, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Alexander! We already are in the evaluation process, but we saw that we can not add different categories in the same campaign. Please can you create a new page of Montage? To add a new category, just like Wiki Loves Africa. My mates will ask for a new one after. Thank you! --Claudia Muñoz (WMMX) (talk) 05:15, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Claudia Muñoz (WMMX), here is another campaign. However, may I ask that you now merge all necessary categories and arrange the grading within two campaigns without the need for a new campaign each time? --Alexander 09:02, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! How can I configure or classify the categories? I can't find the way, I just see the "Add round" button. --Claudia Muñoz (WMMX) (talk) 21:17, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
You should move all files into one category and then import this single category into Montage. --Alexander 21:36, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Alexander, do I remember correctly that the system accepts subcategories? If so, I think an easy workaround would be to add all categories you want to import to a temporary supercategory, and import that one? (making sure there are no cycles) Effeietsanders (talk) 22:25, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, but we can not move the files to a single category because this time we designed the contest to work with five. We will consider it for next year. --Claudia Muñoz (WMMX) (talk) 01:46, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
@Claudia Muñoz (WMMX): : You could definitely copy all files into an extra category, and remove that later. Once you have imported everything, the category does not have to stay. Just thinking out loud :) Let me know if you need any help with that, it's an easy thing to do with cat-a-lot. But if the current setup works for you, that is great! Change of mind

Can a juror change their mind concerning some images in a yes/no round after they are done, but the other jurors are not done and there are days left until the deadline for the round? /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 07:11, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Yes, jurors can change their votes as long as the round is active (not finalized). --Alexander 12:35, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, is there documentation on how to do that available? Either a short screen capture or some images would help a lot. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:13, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
The juror should be able to go to Montage and in the bottom right click on edit previous votes. Ciell (talk) 15:24, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks @Ciell: As the juror is also a coordinator for the campaign they have the coordinator view, is it possible to change? /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 08:52, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
You should go to the bottom of the page, where the part 'Active voting rounds' is found. This part contains the link to 'Edit previous votes'. It is the same for jurors and coordinators. --Alexander 09:46, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
Great! That should solve the issue. Huge amounts of thanks! /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:18, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

MedinaStories Montage Setup

Hello! I am an organizer for MedinaStories photo contest, and I would like to request setting up campaign for jury on Montage by November 1st 2020 (upload phase : 1 Oct to 1 Nov). I have also a specific request and I hope it will be possible: We have 10 categories in the contest, and each category needs to be evaluated seperatly. Thank you! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 09:46, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

@Nassima Chahboun: I don't think this will be a problem, as you can see we did something similar for Italy , the text under the tabel in #Wiki Loves Monuments 2020. Is that what you mean? Are you the one that will be coordinating all the campaigns? Ciell (talk) 19:47, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: Hello, thank you! Yes exactly, it's similar to the example of Italy, and yes I will be the coordinator of all the campaigns. Nassima Chahboun (talk) 08:44, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

@Nassima Chahboun: Here you are. Ciell (talk) 18:21, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

@Ciell: Thank you ! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 09:33, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: Hello! we are facing a problem (it occured only this afternoon), when the jury and I try to log in this message show up: <ExceptionInfo [TypeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute '__getitem__'] (37 frames, last=Callpoint('complete', 193, 'mwoauth.functions', '/data/project/montage/www/python/venv/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/mwoauth/functions.py', 387, " credentials.get('oauth_token')[0],"))> .

Could you please fix it ? Thank you Nassima Chahboun (talk) 17:24, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

@Nassima Chahboun: There was a problem with the server Montage uses, several more tools experienced problems. Montage is back up now, so you should be able to work again! Ciell (talk) 08:41, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: Thank you ! it's working now, but votes that were made few hours before this problem happened were lost, is there a way to fix this or we should just do the work again ? Thank you ! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 10:48, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
I don't actually know, let me ping @Slaporte: for your question. Ciell (talk) 15:41, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
@Nassima Chahboun: I'm afraid there are no votes in the Montage database between 2020-11-10 16:22:48 (UTC) and 2020-11-12 05:54:5 (UTC). Any votes cast during those times were not saved: you'll have to ask the jurors to cast their votes anew. Sorry about this! Ciell (talk) 18:15, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: No problem, thank you ! We also need one more campaign "MedinaStories 2020 Maghreb". Thank you ! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 10:27, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Nassima Chahboun: Could you please give me again the categorie where the images were collected in? Ciell (talk) 13:18, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: Could you please use this category (upload phase : 1 Oct to 1 Nov). Thank you ! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 17:00, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Montage downtime 2020-11-11

There is currently following error when using Montage.

<ExceptionInfo [sqlalchemy.exc.OperationalError: (_mysql_exceptions.OperationalError) (1290, 'The MariaDB server is running with the --read-only option so it cannot execute this statement') [SQL: u'UPDATE users SET last_active_date=%s WHERE users.id = %s'] [parameters: (datetime.datetime(2020, 11, 11, 9, 32, 43, 665211), 14092747L)]] (40 frames, last=Callpoint('defaulterrorhandler', 36, 'MySQLdb.connections', '/data/project/montage/www/python/venv/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/MySQLdb/connections.py', 65, ' raise errorclass, errorvalue'))>

Error is because ToolsDB replication was broken and to fix that they are rebuilding the database. My guess is that it will take day or so. Phabricator ticket to follow the progress is phab:T266587, but in general it cannot be speeded up as the delay is because copying/importing the data takes time.--Zache (talk) 09:37, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Yes, thank you Zache!
For others: a page to check for these kind of server-related errors (MariaDB is one of the big database servers, so it's a server-side problem) is Commons:Montage/Status. The tool is up again now. Ciell (talk) 08:44, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Extra round

Is it possible to add another ranking round, after a ranking round, to break a tie between some images? As it is now I can add a round but I'm not getting the option to add images via Threshold - Minimal average rating for photo. Can I do something about it or are the jury left to solve it outside of Montage? /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 14:25, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

Sorry for the slow response. I think it's not possible. --Alexander 11:27, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
No worries, it was a long shot anyway. If it's possible to add to future versions it would be great, but nothing to spend too much time on. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:20, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
@Axel Pettersson (WMSE): What I've done in the past instead, is predefine the tie-breaking rule. For example, if you use a ranking round, that's not overly complicated because it is hard to have identical votes. For the international jury, we traditionally use "most first places" as the tie breaker - preferring someone REALLLY liking the picture over two people mildly liking it. But this is highly subjective. I think this is usually preferable due to time constraints over an extra round. Another option is to take the highest score in the preceding round, or to use one of the jury members as tie breaker. As long as you pre-define it without seeing the results, all these seem quite reasonable. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:23, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Effeietsanders, I'm adding it to things to think of in advance. So far we haven't had the problem, so we are lucky it's a year with less rush than usual. Using earlier rounds might be a good way to solve it, as some of the involved images have the same rank among all jurors in this case... /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 08:36, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Nevermind, the replacement went smoothly. — Yerpo Eh? 20:51, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi Yerpo, we have a similar problem here https://montage.toolforge.org/#/campaign/372-wiki-loves-monuments-2020-morocco, is there a way to solve it? -- Abdeaitali (talk) 15:14, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
@Abdeaitali: just pause the round, remove the juror and add another one without changing any settings, then activate again. It should work. — Yerpo Eh? 17:33, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Photo challenge

Is it possible to use this tool to vote for the monthly photo challenge?
If so, how can this be used.
--F. RiedelioDiskussion 10:45, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

I forwarded your question to the developers, but maybe you want to send them an email if the question is still relevant. Ciell (talk) 16:50, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
@Ciell:
Thank you very much for your support. The request is still relevant. Unfortunately, I don't know the developer's e-mail address, but because you've already forwarded the problem, this is done for me. A solution of the problem would be a significant relief and improvement not only for me but also for the many contributors and especially for the voters of the monthly photo challenge.

Hi @F. Riedelio: , I'm going to send out a reminder. With "the monthly photo challenge", you mean one of the Commons photo challenges I presume? Could you please provide a link to which one the request is about? The tool works with pre-assigned jury-members, so randomly passing by users of Commons would not be able to vote. But if you have a small set of jurors, I imagine this could be possible with Montage. Ciell (talk) 14:53, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
@F. Riedelio: I'm one of the Montage developers, along with User:MahmoudHashemi. Thanks for your question! Could you help me understand how the monthly photo challenge works? Is there a category or group of eligible images that people vote on? The way Montage works currently, each voting round starts with a set of eligible photos (e.g., from the category for a wiki loves campaign) and a set number of jurors (as Ciell mentioned). I can't make any feature promises at the moment since we have a development backlog, but I'd love to understand what you need to see if it's possible! Slaporte (talk) 16:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Ciell: and @Slaporte: ,
By "the monthly photo challenge" I mean the ‘Monthly photo challenge’ on the main page of Wikimedia Commons.
The aim and purpose of this competition is to encourage those interested to take pictures in order to enrich Wikimedia Commons with photos. Sometimes more than 300 photos are submitted each month per theme. The challenge has 2 themes per month. These are proposed and voted by the users. Each participant can upload up to 4 photos per topic in the submission phase. Voting will take place next month and the results will be announced in the month after next.
It is not a fixed group of jurors, as the voting is open to all registered contributors who have held accounts for at least 10 days and made 50 changes, as well as new Commons contributors who have taken up the challenge with a picture.
The vote will take place as follows:
Up to three photos can be selected by the contributors in each theme to award points for the personal 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In addition, any number of photos can be highly praised (0 points). Sometimes you have to look at over 300 photos, rate them and assign points to vote. To assign points, the selected contribution must be edited by inserting an entry, e.g. * {{3/3 *}} - ~~~~ for the favorites.
For a large number of photos, this voting method is not user-friendly and very time-consuming. It makes voting much more difficult. Therefore, IMHO users do not participate in the competition, which means that Wikipedia misses many photos.
I have already submitted the problem here, unfortunately so far without success.
