Wikimedia Commons group on Flickr

[edit]

I'm an admin of the Wikimedia Commons Group on Flickr, a group that has, up until now, had no moderation for numerous years.  Given my uptick in activity on Flickr (resulting from my uptick on Commons) I'm hoping to change that.

Photographs in the group out to be able to be readily able to be ported to Commons, thereby having a free license. People who sign up for the group agree to that rule. However, currently numerous people are just sharing photographs that they share on numerous other groups for exposure.

I do not have the bandwidth to moderate on my own. Is anyone else currently a regular Flickr user that would be willing and able to help out?

EDIT: I'm including this here because I think we can consider adding this group as a resource on the Flickr files page as we are getting it cleaned up. —Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 19:56, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this up and for your efforts in managing the Wikimedia Commons Group on Flickr. Currently, we have more than 28.1K photos of the Flickr group. In that case, I wish there was any tool that could prevent uploading images that are not incompatible with CC licenses. By human effort, it does not seem practical. ~Moheen (keep talking) 11:43, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to submit a support request with Flickr to ask for them to add this to their roadmap. Another idea would be set the Flick group to review submissions before they are accepted. It's work either way, but this would prevent new photos without the appropriate license to be added. Ckoerner (talk) 22:51, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible to search within a group by license, so e.g. to find photos with 'All Rights Reserved' and the NonCommercial and NoDerivs CC variants: https://www.flickr.com/search/?group_id=30009679%40N00&license=0,1,2,3,6 (the license IDs are documented). Not that it wouldn't be better to prevent them being added to the group to start with! Sam Wilson 00:03, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Public Domain Mark

[edit]

Currently working on the Category:Flickr public domain images needing human review backlog, I was wondering if anybody here knows by what criteria the FlickrReview bot adds the "status=public_domain_mark" flag as opposed to passing a PDM image. The former adds it to the human review queue, while the latter does not. See File:Sherlock Holmes contra Moriarty.jpg and File:Doble crimen en la línea Maginot1.jpg for examples of each behaviour.

The reason I am asking is that we only accept {{PDMark-Owner}} if the Flickr account is actually the copyright owner. Obviously the bot can't make that determination. Of course, we don't accept other licenses from non-copyright-owners either, but unlike those {{PDMark-Owner}} isn't really intended to be used by the copyright owner in the first place.
