Merging

[edit]

I propose to merge Commons:Cross-wiki upload (2024) into Commons:Cross-wiki media upload tool (2016). It seems like the two are either duplicates, or at least the new page should be part of the old page. The old page was created years ago and has more translations (13 languages as of now).

Besides English, Commons:Cross-wiki upload/id will need to be taken care of.

Translation feature is currently disabled. whym (talk) 01:19, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd do the merge the other way round (or rather redirect the 2016 page here. Not much if anything be lost, nor is the 2016 page linked from anywhere of interest. If you enable translations of this page before redirecting, possibly information in the other can be reused by the translation tool. Enhancing999 (talk) 12:54, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds as though you believe nobody cares about the older page. I value the translators for the 13 languages and I believe their work is worth preserving. I would imagine Steinsplitter linked or saw links to it from somewhere, when they created it. Maybe from Special:Tags and RecentChanges? (MediaWiki:Tag-cross-wiki-upload and MediaWiki:Tag-cross-wiki-upload-description?) Either way, it seems sensible to (re-)add such links to Commons:Cross-wiki media upload tool from interface messages like them, if that is not done currently. whym (talk) 10:47, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I find your comment comes across as a personal attack and not really knowledgeable about wikis in general or the translation extension in particular. Nothing is really lost if you "translate" this page before you redirect the other. People can create pages without the need for them to be linked from anywhere. If the other pages is an orphan, nobody did really care about it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't linked from Commons:Upload tools as I had to add a section about it there. How would you preserve the translated content in your approach, more specifically? I thought you meant that future translators will reuse it from translation memory, which may or may not happen, and will be more (redundant) work to translators, in my understanding. Sorry if that is my misunderstanding. By the way, when I said "Commons:Cross-wiki upload/id will need to be taken care of" I meant that I could copy and paste the content for the 1 language, besides doing the same for English - that seems simpler to do. whym (talk) 17:12, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you merge the English texts, a new text would still need to be translated. If parts are similar, the translations from the orphaned page should be suggested. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bare in mind that we are talking about one and a half sentences on the old page. GPSLeo (talk) 18:36, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would count it as 10+ times more, when it's translated into 10+ languages. whym (talk) 19:14, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the 1 sentence could just go to Wikidata. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It turns out there were plenty of links to the original Commons:Cross-wiki media upload tool in interface messages, and it was highly visible for a long time. [1][2] (Search for "Tag: Cross-wiki upload") It might have appeared to be a nearly isolated page, but that was not true. 1) There was a bug and the software failed to render the links since some time in 2022 - this is fixed last week. The software used to show those links in 2016-2022. 2) Special:WhatLinksHere doesn't list them anyway. (But that doesn't mean they are not linked.) whym (talk) 11:10, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
