Wiki Loves Monuments - June 7, 2012 Meeting, San Francisco

The question at hand: Will there by a WLM US 2012?

[edit]

Some of us fear that Wiki Love Monuments US 2012 might not succeed without dedicated leadership nationally. While events can take place around the country, such as Wiki Take Your City, these smaller events will not fit into the matrix of the international event. Projects around the world have succeeded with project leaders. So, will there be a WLM US 2012 without solid leadership? Or should we wait until next year when Wikimania is off our plate? The talk page is a great place to start this discussion.

Volunteers willing to lend support

[edit]

This meeting was spurred by Smallbones' visit to San Francisco. Volunteers in the Bay Area will be organizing Wiki Loves Monuments for Northern California, with opportunity for expansion. Since larger scale organization still needs to take place, volunteers have offered to participate in the following positions on a national scale, as needed:

  • Smallbones - Liaison between project & volunteers
  • Aude - Website maintainer (with assistance from volunteers)
  • Kaldari - Uploader/interface development
  • Matthew Roth - Press/Outreach
  • Sarah Stierch - Partnership & jury outreach, support press/outreach
  • Philip Chang - Outreach
  • Nicholas Michael Bashour - Coordinate Wikimedia DC's involvement in WLM US, which will include management of the national jury (with support from Sarah S), national press and social media relations (with assistance from Matthew/Jay), WLM-centric events replicable around the US (we will lend logistic support to those who wish to plan events and can provide limited monetary support through microgrants), and basically all on-the-ground outreach and work and some on-wiki support.
  • Your name here!

Additional volunteers are needed to make Wiki Loves Monuments a magical experience nationwide. If you feel you can support, at any level, any of these areas please let us know: outreach, event logistics, website, technology, press, sponsorships, and partnerships.

OPPORTUNITY?: Event outreach coordinator

[edit]

Is there an opportunity for an outreach coordinator be funded for the duration of the project from present until the end of WLM in October? This part time position (approx. 20 hrs/wk) would fund a coordinator to take on responsibilities such as:

  • Establish and recruit Jury
  • Develop partnerships and sponsorships
  • Develop outreach materials
  • Coordinating events nationally & supporting events locally
  • Work with international press team for publicity coordination

We believe that this could be funded by US Chapters. This follows in the footsteps of European chapters who have done the same (WMDE, WMIT, etc).

Will we have a Wiki Love Monuments US on purely volunteer time?

[edit]

Jury

[edit]

A jury of 3 to 7 people will be needed to examine the final images for WLM. These people should be able to be accessible for a review of the final images in October/November, preferably in person. These people should consist of at least one professional photographer, one historical preservationist, and one Wikipedian.

Possible jurists to contact include:

  • David Shankbone
  • David Ferrario
  • Frank Goodyear, National Portrait Gallery, Associate Curator of Photography
  • Carol Highsmith, Architectural Photographer
  • Nina Pailey
  • Barbara Bridgers, Director, Photograph Studio, Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Your idea here

Website

[edit]

Aude is the owner of the current WLM US website. She can provide access to the website, which is based via Wordpress, for interested parties. Current opportunities include:

  • Creating a tagline for the page which explains what WLM is about
  • Blog
  • Links
  • Calendar for events
  • Lists of the places!
  • Insert an opportunity here

Technology

[edit]

Kaldari will be taking lead on making the uploader and interface accessible for all skill levels. You can help! Please volunteer to lend a hand as needed.

Opportunities include:

  • Image map of US on website, then click on state, then county
  • Replace “Date listed” with ref num
  • Ask multichill
  • Upload flow
  • build Upload Wizard campaign
  • national map that is clickable
  • Build state lists and a national map
  • Build county list that ties into Upload Wizard
  • 3,033 Counties in U.S. (is it feasible to build every county?)

Sponsorships/Partnerships and Outreach/Promotion

[edit]

Sponsorships are funded partnerships. Partnerships are general opportunities for support and working together. Relationships don’t necessarily have to be open source - WLM is a different breed and requires that we bring in as much support from all resources related to photographic culture.

Possible relationships include:

  • Canon
  • Nikon
  • Adobe
  • B & H or Adorama
  • Flickr - Matthew (Zack Sheppard, Flickr Senior Community Manager)
  • Prelinger Archives - Sarah
  • Library of Congress - Sarah
  • Smithsonian - Sarah
  • Getty - Sarah
  • Philadelphia Museum of Art - Smallbones
  • Photographic societies
  • Art Institute, schools
  • Nikonians
  • Apeture Magazine
  • Meetup.com
  • Preservation magazine
  • National Geographic (WMDE’s Barbara Fisher has started communications with them)
  • American Association of State and Local History
  • State and local historical societies
  • San Francisco Library
  • WikiProject NHRP (Smallbones has communicated some with members of WikiProject and has extensive history contributing here)
  • List of active, well-followed Twitter accounts related to photography

Ideas: Regional and Local Event logistics

[edit]

Volunteers in their own regions will be responsible for local and regional events. Opportunities include:

  • State and city wide events such as Wiki Takes Your City
  • State and city wide contests sponsored by local and regional orgs
  • Local events can be blogged about and featured on a calendar on the website.
  • Eventbrites and Wikipedia spaces should both be utilized
Event ideas include
  • Fill the Gaps (Missing Links) - local organizing of events that get at National Register places/buildings/sites where there are no photos on Wikipedia.
  • “Best Photo” of a landmark that is significant in your community
  • Longest road trip - which two pictures are farthest from each other by one photographer
  • Women’s historic sites
