Welcome to Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Cameroon which takes place from June 1 to 30, 2024

Introduction

Wiki Loves Earth 2024 is an international photography competition. Its main aim is to encourage the development of protected natural areas through Wikimedia projects (mainly the encyclopedia Wikipedia and its Wikimedia Commons media library).

This is the fifth time that Cameroon is organizing this contest, which runs from June 1 to 30, 2024. You are all invited to participate, whether as a participant (professional photographer or not), volunteer of the organization or both. Everyone can participate. It is also a good opportunity to raise public awareness of nature and biodiversity, and remind people of the issues related to its preservation.

Many natural sites are to be photographed: the contest will cover all areas in all regions of Cameroon, from national parks to regional nature reserves. You can import as many photographs of these natural areas as you want.

These photos may have been taken at any time, but must be uploaded between June 1 and 30, 2024.

These photos must be placed under a free license

At the end of the competition, the local jury will award prizes to the three best photographs of the ten selected.

After the local selections, the international jury will select the best photos (of all the photos of the contest) among which 10 Cameroonian photos will be included in the list.

Contest rules

The rules to be followed by each participant to ensure that each image is included in this Cameroon contest are:

1 All entries should be your own work; don't manipulate the original images and make sure there are no watermarks visible.

2 All photos must be uploaded between 1st and 30th June 2024 to be eligible.

3 During the download process, you authorize the licensing of the Creative Commons CC BY-SA (or equivalent) to allow the reuse of the image.

4 You must have specified a contact email address in the settings of your Wikimedia Commons account.

5 Download photos of the natural areas of Cameroon.

6 Legends and description are mandatory.

7 Don't forget to add categories to your photo. It will be useful to anyone looking for your photo.

8 Make sure you don't upload any duplicate images.

9 If the photo is deleted for any reason, it is automatically excluded from the contest. You are responsible to the law for taking and uploading photos.

In addition to this, there are some practical rules:

1 Sign in or create an account on Wikimedia Commons.

2 Name your photos well.

3 Use our download button at the bottom of step 5 of the "How to participate?" section to upload the images;

4 Share your upload success on social media with our hashtags: #WLECameroon #WLE2024.

Prizes to be won

Local prizes

Cameroon's award winners will receive the following awards: 

1 A gift voucher worth 150,000 FCFA;
2 A gift voucher worth 100,000 FCFA ;
3 A gift voucher worth 75,000 FCFA ;

Additional price

  • The two (02) persons who have posted more images in quantity and quality will each receive a gift check worth 15,000 FCFA for the first and 10,000 FCFA for second.
  • The person who contributes to Wikipedia (writing and improving Wikipedia articles related to protected areas in Cameroon) will receive a gift check worth 15,000 FCFA.

International prizes

How to participate?

Step 1: ‘’Find protected areas to photograph near you!

Step 2: Take pictures of them! Take as many good-looking photos as you can, and try out different angles. Even if the photo doesn't win a prize, it can help improve Wikipedia!

Step 3: Write a description of what you have photographed. Include the name of the site and the date of the photo.

Step 4 : Sign in. Don't have a Wikimedia Commons account yet? Create an account - only takes a few moments! Make sure your email address is confirmed.

Step 5: publish your photos from 1 to 30 June 2024.

Selection criteria

From June 1 to June 30, 2024, you can upload any photos (old or new) you want from the list of protected natural areas you have visited. At the end of the competition, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the top ten different photographs from the protected areas of Cameroon which they will rank in order of preference. The vote will take place in July 2024 to submit to represent in the international final.

The criteria for selecting the winners are as follows:

  • the technical quality of the shooting,
  • the originality of the approach,
  • the descriptive and pedagogical value and the artistic value.

The images that rank highest in the international ranking will at least meet the technical criteria of the Wikimedia Commons «Remarkable Images» process.
