HOW TO USE THE WLX JURY TOOL FOR RATING YOUR LOCAL IMAGES

📌Rating the uploaded images for your local WLE and selecting the best ones are the most important parts of organizing this kind of contest. For this, you need a team of jurors and an evaluation tool.

You can use different voting tools, but as an international organizing team of Wiki Loves Earth, we can propose our guidance and assistance for the WLX jury tool, which was developed by Illya Korniyko, a member of the core team.

INSTRUCTION

[edit]

If you want to select your images using the WLX jury tool, please email the International organizing team (wle-team@wikimedia.org.ua). We will create an account for you and give you rights as an organizer. Then we will send you access: your login and password (which you will be able to change later in the settings);

1. Open the tool by the link and sign in to your account by inserting your login and password there:

2. You will see the first tab, which will appear as “Users”. You can add your jurors or other team members there.

3. To add your team members or jurors, you need to create an account for them. Enter their full name and active email address, and choose the role (a Wiki account is not mandatory). Then, click the blue button on the right to see the “Edit user” settings:

4. An email must be unique, so you won’t be able to use an email address you already used in the WLX tool in previous years (hopefully, we will fix it in the future). To bypass this limitation, you can add to the existing email, for example, “+wle2024”, as shown in the screenshot above. In the “Password” section, you can create a password, for example, “or24c09” (in the same way, you can change yours).

Then, send an email and password to the person you created an account for them to enter (it is better to check manually if everything is working well by logging in to this person’s account, e.g., by using another browser or incognito mode). If not, and you don’t know how to fix it, text us!).

5. Go back to the main page, and there you can find the buttons “Mass import” and “Edit greeting message”. Click on these buttons, and you will find detailed instructions on what to do when you want to use them (it is optional!).

6. Before creating the rounds, you need to import all the needed images for the evaluation. Usually, when we create an account for your country’s evaluation, we add the images from the category directly, and they are already there (e.g., Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Ghana). But if you need to add some images manually or to check\edit this part, then find the tab “Images”, add the full name of the category and the exact images there, and click the button “Import images”.

7. After you’ve added jurors as users and imported images, you need to create a round to start the voting. Press the button “Rounds” and then the blue button “Add round”.

8. It is up to you how many rounds to have in order to select the best images, but usually, it should be at least 2 rounds to have a clear, transparent, and structured selection. For example, for the first round, you can choose the rating type “+\-” if you need to sort and remove some images (this round can be done even without the jurors and only by the organizers in order to delete all the images that obviously won’t become winners). The next round (already for the jurors) can have a “1-10” rating type, where the jury will put from 1 to 10 stars (marks) for the image. Select the jurors for this round, image distribution (usually, it’s “Each image to all jurors”), and press the button “Save”.

  • Note that editing the round after you save it is not possible. You will need to create a new round and make a change already there (but if it's crucial, then it can be done manually by the international team).

9. After creating the round, you can find an active round in the “Rounds” tab. To deactivate the round after the evaluation ended or if you created a wrong round and no longer need it, just press the red button.

10. The button “Statistics” above allows you to track the evaluation process and the progress of each juror.

The “gallery mode” allows you to see each juror's progress and rated images.

11. To create the next round (where you will have less images), just press “Add round” and follow the same instructions above. You can change the rating type to, for example, “1-20”. Don’t forget to choose the previous round which the new round will be based on and set the parameter “average image rating is at least”, as it allows you to sort the images from the previous round.

12. After your last round is over, press the red button, check the statistics, and copy the list of the best images from there.
