Wiki Loves Classics is a project organized by the WikiClassics User Group with the aim of highlighting the cultural heritage of Wiki Loves Monuments and promoting better image results and platform contents related to it.

Goals

[edit]

Every year part of the files uploaded to Wiki Loves Monuments are related to Classical Culture.

WLM is however mostly aimed at photographers. Our goal is to classify and evaluate these images in order to improve their quality and quantity over the years.

The first test exploratory edition was performed in 2019. The entire selection process and the categories were defined for the first time.

We also hope to use this initiative a motivational framework for catalyzing the formation of sustainable relationship between the academia and Wikimedia community in this field, since Wikipedia is an active platform dedicated to collecting and sharing educational content freely to everyone.

Evaluation

[edit]

Winner (and a runner-ups) are selected for these five categories:

  • landscapes and views;
  • coexistence or contrast of modern and classic;
  • architectural details;
  • museum collections and objects;
  • epigraphs and writings.

The competition stress the importance of images of details, and jurors also generally gives higher score to file with more complete titles and descriptions.

Images with watermarks or similar artifacts (framing) are not disqualified, but cropped whenever possible. If the addition cannot be removed, the images receive a lower score.
