Potential issue with text in graphics

[edit]

Occasionally text in an image can become distrorted (eg letters overlaying each other) when it is uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, this is due to the font not displaying properly. To correct this the text should be converted into paths.

  • Inkscape: highlight the text and click Path > Object to path
  • Illustrator:highlight the text and click Type > Create Outlines

Once the image has been corrected the image can be overwritten by going to the file on Commons and selecting 'Upload a new version of this file' under the 'File history' section.

Using FAO text on Wikipedia

[edit]

Please use these instructions to add text to Wikipedia articles, ensuring you use the template, otherwise the text you add may get deleted and it cannot be tracked using the metrics tool.

Attribution
[edit]

This page describes the process of adding open license text to Wikipedia. Since the publication is published by FAO but the license is on Wikimedia, please fill in the fields like this:

  • DocumentURL = The URL for the publication on the FAO website
  • License statement URL = The URL of the document uploaded to Wikimedia Commons

Currently you can only add open license text to English and Spanish Wikipedia.

Referencing
[edit]

When you use text from a publication please also reference it, use the URL of the publication on the FAO website as the reference.

Writing tips
[edit]
  • Recommendations: if publication makes a recommendation e.g "We recommend..." please rewrite it to say "FAO recommends...". It would be helpful if the reason behind the recommendation was given if possible e.g "FAO recommends ... because it is a more sustainable fishing method".
