Wikimedia accepts and encourages uploading video files on Commons. Videos, like images, must be freely licensed. Videos must be in a free file format, which currently only means WebM and Ogg Theora. However, most videos available online or produced by recording devices are in other formats, which is why conversion is needed.

The preferred video format is VP9 video in the WebM container, but VP8 video in the WebM container is also allowed.
