My version of File:Ao logo.svg doesn't render correctly
For some reason, MediaWiki doesn't put the background color of #283b86 in the PNG thumbnails, so they look like blank. This is a bug, right? pandakekok9 13:15, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Upload Wizard changes
Hi - is there anywhere I can find about upcoming changes to the Upload Wizard, or request several? Finding it difficult to batch-upload. I've tried other tools as well, and have never found anything easier nonetheless. ɱ (talk) 22:45, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Finding Creative Commons YouTube videos
Hi. I tried to use the Creative Commons filter on YouTube to find an image that could be used here, but it absolutely does not seem to work. Is there a way to get it to work, or if not an alternate search engine for CC videos? I apply it but the videos that show up are not labeled as Creative Commons anywhere. Use of 16-bit tif format to preserve depth of colors
I posted on Commons_talk:Quality_images_candidates#Use_of_16-bit_tif_format_to_preserve_depth_of_colors but this discussion seems highly relevant here. I'm not quite sure what to do with my pictures in the meantime. --Trougnouf (talk) 16:05, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Wrong caption in Wikidata infobox
The photo in the Wikidata infobox in Category:Melanogaster (fungus) has got a wrong caption: M. variegatus instead of M. tuberiformis. Wikidata item contains pictures of both of these two species, but their captions are correct there. How can the caption be corrected? --Jan Kameníček (talk) 23:47, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Jan.Kamenicek: interesting. the caption displayed on Commons belongs to the photo of M. variegatus; there is no caption defined for the photo of Melanogaster tuberiformis. gonna add one to that one and I guess it might fix it? Recent changes
- You can now put pages on your watchlist for a limited period of time. Some wikis already had this function. [1][2]
Changes later this week
- Information from Wikidata that is used on a wiki page can be shown in recent changes and watchlists on a Wikimedia wiki. To see this you need to turn on showing Wikidata edits in your watchlist in the preferences. Changes to the Wikidata description in the language of a Wikimedia wiki will then be shown in recent changes and watchlists. This will not show edits to languages that are not relevant to your wiki. [3][4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all wikis from 10 December (calendar).
Future changes
- You can vote on proposals in the Community Wishlist Survey between 8 December and 21 December. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on.

supress image in template:creator
There are several reasons not to show an image while using a Creator template (for example gallery pages of artists such as Jacob Philipp Hackert). But what should I do, e.g. Creator:Jacob Philipp Hackert? Best greetings and stay healthy! --Mateus2019 (talk) 10:35, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
Translation needed...
I recently created {{Morevols}} to support the IA books upload project User:Fæ was continuing ( with the apparent goal of getting at least 1 million public domain or Commons compatible works mirrored on Commons).
The template was created to help identify single volumes of multi-vlume sets, so that these could be grouped off into appropriate categories, and the additional volumes from IA (or other sources) found and mirrored on Commons, so that there were complete works.
I wrote the template in English, However Commons is a multi-language project, and thus because some of the works it may be used on might also be in languages other than English, the template needs to be appropriately translated.
As there are people much better at this than I am, I was wondering if anyone here wanted to step forward and translate this template? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:50, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have added a German translation with LangSwitch, so other language parameters can easily be amended. De728631 (talk) 13:27, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
When the display language is set to Chinese, it will show [5], how can I fix it? (`・ω・´) (talk) 14:24, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- @-akko: Do you mean that the closing templates are not visible below the diff? This seems to be a cache issue; you can work it around by purging the page (e.g. using the UTCLiveClock gadget). Of course this is not a fix, just a workaround, and the software should not show stale content in diff view. I hope there’s a Phabricator ticket for this issue, but I couldn’t find it. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:18, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

@Fæ: For the deletion requests here the line:
[[Category:IA_mirror_related_deletion_requests]]
Should be
<noinclude>[[Category:IA_mirror_related_deletion_requests]]</noinclude>
Can some with AWB or related ensure that it is for all these DR's and the subcats for /kept and /deleted please..

Picture fails to be transmitted from Commons to other projects
The File:Czechoslovak Baptist Preachers in Prison Advert.jpg fails to be transmitted from Commons to Wikisource or any other project for some reason, see e. g. en:s:File:Czechoslovak Baptist Preachers in Prison Advert.jpg and the discussion at Wikisource. It does not seem to be a local Wikisource problem as the problem can be displayed at other projects too. May I ask for help? --Jan Kameníček (talk) 16:27, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- The problems were caused by an ad blocker. Now solved by turning it off and also by removing the word "advert" from the file's name. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 12:30, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
No pdf or djvu by default
Hi, is there a way to search Commons without getting pdf or djvu results by default. I am generally only interested in images (and I know how to exclude those two file types in the search). I just wish I could set it as a default somewhere. Thanks in advance. -- Deadstar (msg) 18:47, 7 December 2020 (UTC) My helpdesk query in August got no reply
- User preferences are not there for this. You have to add "-filemime:pdf". This would be a good thing to request as extended standard user search prefs on Phabricator. --Fæ (talk) 11:10, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks @Fæ: , would you be able to help with that, or give me a link & I'll see if I can figure it out? -- Deadstar (msg) 12:07, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
- Like this museum accounts 1920 report -filemime:pdf -filemime:djvu
- or museum accounts 1920 report filemime:jpeg.
- Obviously some key words trigger a lot of documents, others less so
- More details mw:Help:CirrusSearch#filemime. --Fæ (talk) 12:53, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
- I see it has a phabricator task - Perfect, thank you :) -- Deadstar (msg) 23:24, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
- See also Special:MediaSearch. It searches by default for images only, with an UI options for other types.--Snaevar (talk) 19:04, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- User:Deadstar Does the special page I mentioned fix the problem ? --Snaevar (talk) 14:16, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snaevar: I had not seen your comment. I will try that next week. Thank you. -- Deadstar (msg) 20:43, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I just tried that, but it is not useful for me. I am mainly categorising files, and it does not give me enough information about the actual files found, nor does it give me category names (if there are any). But thank you for that, I didn't know that page existed. -- Deadstar (msg) 16:08, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Moving a page
There were two categories referring to the same institution, Indiana University Art Museum and Eskenazi Museum of Art, with material split between them I have been reorganising to correspond with Wikipedia, which has the main location at Eskenazi (which it has been for a few years now) and a redirect from IA museum. This seemed uncontroversial and straigthforward, but there is a page named Institution:Indiana University Art Museum in the category Indiana University Art Museum and I can't see how to move this. I need the category Indiana University Art Museum to be empty before I put in the re-direct. Help appreciated Kognos (talk) 14:55, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Kognos: It depends on the Commons category (P373) statement in the museum’s Wikidata item, which I changed now. By the way, technically you can redirect the category before emptying it, and probably some bot even does the change I did now if the category is redirected (so it would have “fixed itself” after some time). Anyways, the IA category is now empty. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:10, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: Thanks, I'll make a note of this so I know next time. Kognos (talk) 15:44, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 11 January 2021.
Recent changes
- The
{{citation needed}}
template shows when a statement in a Wikipedia article needs a source. If you click on it when you edit with the visual editor there is a popup that explains this. Now it can also show the reason and when it was added. [7]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- You can propose and discuss what technical improvements should be done for geographic information. This could be coordinates, maps or other related things.
- Some wikis use LanguageConverter to switch between writing systems or variants of a language. This can only be done for the entire page. There will be a
<langconvert>
tag that can convert a piece of text on a page. [8] - Oversighters and stewards can hide entries in Special:AbuseLog. They can soon hide multiple entries at once using checkboxes. This works like hiding normal edits. It will happen in early January. [9]

How to authenticate to Wikimedia Commons Query Service using OAuth in Python?
Commons:SPARQL query service says it's possible to authenticate against the query service using OAuth, but has anyone managed to do so programmatically? I am trying to do so from Python. If anyone has any working code, in any language, I would appreciate whatever you can share. I have asked the full question including giving my current not-working Python code on StackOverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/65303450/how-to-authenticate-to-wikimedia-commons-query-service-using-oauth-in-python --FrankieRayRobertson (talk) 13:38, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Updating to add, that I can't get it working using a simpler setup of requests+requests_oauthlib either. Again see StackOverflow for the code. Is it really possible to authenticate with OAuth as the documentation says? If not, maybe this should be removed to avoid causing confusion. --FrankieRayRobertson (talk) 14:06, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Bulk recategorizing
I am uploading a Flickr photoset using Commons:Flickr2Commons, and it does not seem to automatically categorize the images. I have some categories in mind, but this is a very large set. Is there a way to bulk categorize the uploads? Joofjoof (talk) 20:30, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Joofjoof: COM:Cat-a-lot may help, you can run it from an existing category that contains the images or from your Uploads page. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:05, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Joofjoof: QuickCategories might also be useful for some cases, for example when you have the files to be categorised as a list for some reason. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 16:52, 26 December 2020 (UTC)

TP jam
Could someone take a look at my talk page archive settings? It seems to be failing right now. --Fæ (talk) 12:40, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fæ: It doesn't seem to be a problem with your settings. It seems the ArchiveBot is trying to archive to User talk:Fæ/2020, but the resulting text is exceeding $wgMaxArticleSize, which is 2 mebibytes, which then results in failure to save. Perhaps split your archive into two parts? pandakekok9 13:01, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'll manually have a go. --Fæ (talk) 20:27, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
SVG rendering issues?
The last two SVG files I've uploaded (File:Jefferson Rams wordmark.svg and File:Newspapers.com logo-on-black.svg) both seem to be rendering very incorrectly. Neither of them seems to be using anything but the most basic SVG functions, and they render fine with rsvg-convert
on my local machine. Is there something wrong with the rendering servers? --IagoQnsi (talk) 01:17, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
svg bad display

I have made svg image. Black points are not visible on the png versions of svg file, only on the original svg file. How to change it ? TIA --Adam majewski (talk) 11:15, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
- Commons uses RSVG to create PNG from SVG's. (technically it uses ImageMagick, which in turn uses RSVG). I don't know an specific answer to your question, but if you manage to get the points to appear in RSVG, then they will appear here also.--Snaevar (talk) 20:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Adam majewski: This is phab:T270630. I haven't investigated to determine which librsvg version fixes that bug, so I don't know if it will be fixed Soon™ or not. @Snaevar: If we're getting technical, SVG files are rendered by a custom Thumbor engine that calls librsvg and then passes the resulting png to ImageMagick (which doesn't actually do much with it). --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 04:15, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
