"Last modified" bar on mobile view

SVG size?

Hi! I just made an SVG (File:Canadian Atlantic Command formation patch.svg) in a text editor. It went well, except the file on Commons is a different size than the ViewBox is set to -- 512 × 366 when it should be 316 x 226. Why is this? @DemonDays64: The view box was 316px by 226px, but you didn't tell MediaWiki how big a pixel was. viewBox defines the size of the SVG's coordinate system, not the displayed size of the viewport itself. Without a width and/or a height in <svg>, the standard requires that we use 100%. MediaWiki just happens to define 100% as 512px. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:28, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Where's the blacklisted domains list

I'm auto-filling the description of youtube videos if the uploader forgot to. I built an API to parse data from Youtube via the Internet Archive(tool forge IP is blocked by YouTube) and return the useful stuff but it would be great to remove all the blacklisted URLs before return the description. There's a bit.ly URL in https://eatchabot.toolforge.org/youtube?user_agent=YouTubeReviewBot&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9V78UbdzWI and I would like to parse these out. // Eatcha (talk) 15:15, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

@Eatcha: There is a Commons-specific blacklist at MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist accompanied by a whitelist at MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, and a Wikimedia-wide one at m:Spam blacklist (there’s no global whitelist). bit.ly is on the Meta blacklist. Trouble downloading

First time user. Whenever I click download --> full resolution, the image enlarges, but no download. Please advise what to do. And if I'm not supposed to be asking this question here, please let me know where to go.

Tool for downloading spited images and merge them

I want to download some pictures. The only way to show highest resolution is to use zoom like [1]. It will give 0_0.jpeg to 22_16.jpeg. Is there a way to download the pictures and make them together automatically? Thanks.--維基小霸王 (talk) 14:34, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

There is a download symbol on this website. You have to register to download high resolution of this pictures. I guess this is the intention of the owner. It might be illegal to work around this mechanism. -- Dr. Schorsch (talk) 16:03, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

This is something that could be done with something like image magic, however, it will not be lossless. I'm not sure if that is possible to do it easily corretly. I seriously doubt that it can be illegal to merge files you have downloaded, but it maybe against their terms of use and you may be banned from their website. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 16:21, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Who changed the WikiData object describing a file page?

Since a couple of days I receive a warning message when applying wikidata Property instance of (P31) to a file page. As an example file File:Muelheim an der Ruhr - Arion rufus - contraction.webm has a property instance of (P31) with the value video clip (Q677466). This was an accepted property until one day in the last week. Now I get a problem marker:

 Zulässige Entitätstypenbeschränkung
 Hilfe Diskussion
 Die Eigenschaft ist ein(e) sollte nicht auf diesem Objekttyp verwendet werden, die einzig gültigen Objekttypen sind:
   Wikibase-Element
   Wikibase property Englisch
   Lexem

If you click on the flash next to video clip (Q677466) on the file page you will see the message in your language. I think this happens because someone changed the allowed properties of a mediawiki file page.

My problem is that I do not exactly now, which wikidata object is defining the allowed properties of a mediawiki file page. If I would I could probably fix the problem itself. Does anyone now where this mistake can be fixed? -- Dr. Schorsch (talk) 15:08, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

@Xorx: If you click on "Zulässige Entitätstypenbeschränkung" in that marker, you'll be taken to the constraint that caused the problem, which is part of instance of (P31). It looks like this constraint was added by Dhx1 a few days ago[2]. --bjh21 (talk) 16:17, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

search of a page for supplementary information on a photos file

Please, before my photos file be destroyed, help me to find the page for providing supplementary information about the source on this photos file. I was here for 3 hours without success. The photos file is already downloaded but the file may be destroyed soon if I do not find this page for supplementing infos. @Paule Juliette DeBeaumont: I think I fixed the problems for File:DeBeaumont, photographes, Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec (15 photos anciennes).pdf, assuming things to be okay now (but I will keep an eye on it). Search box

Is there an issue on my side or did the search box on Commons recently change its behaviour? On Wikipedia, when I type the title of some existing article into the search bar, say car, a menu appears, showing me (1) links to the article car and to articles with similar titles and (2), at the bottom, an option to do a full-text search for car. That used to be the same here on Commons. However, when I now search for car here, I'm getting (1) but no longer (2). Instead, there is now a "files depicting" section. Is there a way to get (2) back? I found that quite useful. — Pajz (talk) 16:37, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

@Pajz: Currently the default setting is that you get to the result list when pressing the search button (or the enter key), even if there’s an exact match. If you want to go back to the previous setting (redirect to the exact match upon search button/enter if there’s one, and always have a containing… section at the bottom), you can turn on Go to exact match when searching in your search preferences. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:32, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Problems

• All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [4]
• Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [5]
• There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [6]
• A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [7]

Changes later this week

• The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [8]
• Users' global.js and global.css pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [9]
• In the MonoBook skin, the searchGoButton identifier is now searchButton. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27.
• Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses counter to prevent large archives was changed. [10]

Recent changes

• FileImporter and FileExporter became standard features on all Wikis during the first week of August. They help you transfer files from local wikis to Wikimedia Commons with the original file information and history intact. [11]

Problems

• The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [12]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 12. It will be on all wikis from August 13 (calendar).

Future changes

• All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on September 1. This is planned between 13:30 and 15:30 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [13][14]

Bug in UploadWizard?

When I use UploadWizard, the first round is okay, but every next upload, proceeding from 'Upload more images', after starting the upload I always get the message "You are already uploading etc." (but in Dutch, in my case: "U bent het bestand xxx.jpg al aan het uploaden"). This happens every time and has been going on for months, if not a year or longer. At first I thought it was due to an oversensitive mouse button, but it's not. Do other people also have this problem, and if so: could this be fixed? Thanks, Eissink (talk) 11:58, 9 August 2020 (UTC).

@Eissink: yeah! I'm not sure why not. I guess it's not that common to click 'Upload more files' — I use it all the time though, and it's really annoying! Uploading duplicate file by wizard - bad message

When trying to wizard-upload a file which seems to be duplicate I get a buggy message with no variables expanded or links linkified:

A file identical to this file ([[:$1]]) has previously been deleted.  You
should check that file's

deletion history].  If you disagree with the reason for deletion, please

• If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an undo tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [15]
• The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [16]

Marking files superseded by a template?

I've reconstructed File:2007 US News Top 40 colleges.png as w:Template:U.S. News top 10. However, when I try to mark the 2007 file as {{Superseded}}, it wants to force me to use a filename. Is there any way to mark the file as superseded in the way I want? Sdkb (talk) 06:31, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jonteemil: So I'm going to take that as indication that there's no current way to do what I want? That seems like something that should be fixed, since this isn't even the first time I've come across a file that was superseded by a graph. I'll put a pointer to here at the template's talk page. @Jonteemil: I created w:Template:U.S. News top 10, which is an updated/dynamic version of the old File:2007 US News Top 40 colleges.png. I want to mark the old file with a notice that anyone coming across it should probably use w:Template:U.S. News top 10 instead. Sdkb (talk) 21:36, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

@Sdkb: I think the way to achieve what you want probably lies in creating a local description on enwiki. On en:File:2007 US News Top 40 colleges.png there's a link to "Add a local description". I've never tried using it, but it would seem to be the obvious way to add a statement of supersession that would only appear on enwiki. You might want to ask in en:Wikipedia:Help desk for guidance, though. --bjh21 (talk) 10:07, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

@Sdkb: You do realize that w:Template:U.S. News top 10 is not a file, right? Furthermore, since Wikimedia Commons is global project, and enwiki a local one, an enwiki file can't supersede a Commons file.

I do agree that File:2007 US News Top 40 colleges.png would be considered superseded on enwiki but on Wikimedia Commons we also have to take into account all the other thousands of wikis that hypothetically might be in use of the file.Jonteemil (talk) 21:45, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

1. How can a template on en-wiki supersede a file on Commons? The former is specific to en-wiki; the latter can be used by any wiki in our system.
2. How can something that shows a "top 10" be considered as necessarily superseding something else that shows a "top 40"? They are clearly not interchangeable.

Prevent automatic section int:filedesc on upload

Hello,

because I have my own description template to simplify some useful informations (camera, location etc.), I use the blank upload form (&uploadformstyle=basic). My template already includes == {{int:filedesc}} == (and == {{int:license-header}} ==, too), which was no problem so far. But newly the basic upload form automatically adds the section int:filedesc on top, which is very annyoing, because I have to edit each new file page and remove it manually. Isn't there a possibility to prevent this? I already use the basic form excactly to have no unnecessary additions, and for those who need the section they can use the button in the click-and-paste-bar below the text field.

By the way, why don't we have a preview here like at dewiki? Would be very useful.

• We have preview on basic upload, I use it all the time, but you have to select the file and the name of the file before it will work. Also keep in mind that it will show all the category links in blue, even if they do not exist, so it doesn't help to check if categories are typed correctly. Also for me the top header has been adding itself since I have started here. As I can see it works in the following way, it adds == {{int:filedesc}} == as th first line, unless your first line is exactly that text (with spaces in those spots, etc.) if your approach adds a slightly different string, then perhaps it is misdetecting it, make sure that you do that exactly. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 15:16, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

@Gone Postal: First, I ment a preview of the description, not of the image! In order to check article links etc. (categories are no problem, existing ones are suggested and non-existing ones become red). Second, the first line in the description will always be my template and not int:filedesc even though the first line inside my template exactly matches the string as you mentioned. @MdE: Yes, I meant the description. What are you talking about? You clearly read me talking about categories, and they are not on the file itself, but in the description. I am confused, did you read what I have written or not? As for the addition of the heading, it should be the first heading anyhow, it is quite a bad idea to add things before it. @Gone Postal: You wrote “it will show all the category links in blue, even if they do not exist” and that is wrong. Links to not existing categories are red. There is a group box File description on the upload formular, containing Destination filename, Summary, some edit tools, Licensing and then Categories (looks the same like HotCat). And this Categories section is very user-friendly because you can check the spelling before upload. But that was not the problem. What I need would be a whole page preview for the summary to check article links to enwiki or dewiki, not categories.

You also wrote “So simply remove that heading from whatever template you are using to fill in all the fields, and the problem is solved.” - But who or what then solves the problem, that hundreds of my files are missing the == {{int:license-header}} ==, which whas included by my template?! @Gone Postal and MdE: After some experimentation, I think the confusion here is that Gone Postal has the ImprovedUploadForm gadget turned on, and MdE has it turned off. If it's turned on then even the basic upload form gets a "Preview" button, but the preview generated by that button gets the colour of category links wrong. As a result of the COM:PDM update, there are now many candidates for mass undeletion, e.g. Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with hastemplate:"CC-BY" insource:flickr insource:/"reviewlicense=Public Domain Mark"/, where being licensed under the PDM was the sole reason for deletion. Hi, it seems that this BOT is not doing its full job since the 25-08-20, it has stopped from to notify users, to extract nomination from the candidate list and to add the atgs to the images. CSS fix for mobile Commons

Currently, the special:UploadWizard's layout is pretty much unusable with mobile devices which are using MinervaNeue skin. Biggest problems are Minerva's a two-column layout and fixed minimum width which can be fixed with custom CSS. Here is my attempt for it.

Currently, the missing pieces are the last tab for Structured data which almost works but it is a little bit too wide and navigational arrows are too big. However, with those changes, it is usable with a mobile web interface and this just for sharing the CSS for testing/comments.

Also, I would like to ask what we should do to fix it for everybody? Should we do the PHAB tickets to fixing the UploadWizard in upstream OR create CSS gadget (which may be enabled by default?) and then push the fixes to upstream? --Zache (talk) 12:04, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Mirror images

Hi. Is there a tool like Rotatebot or CropTool to fix mirror images, i.e. flip them along the central horizontal or verical axis? Or perhaps a tag/template to indicate that an image is mirrored? For example: this one is correct, but this and this photo of the same scene are not (compare the rocky peaks with this 360° image). --HyperGaruda (talk) 14:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

'Noise' in samples...

I noted that the sample here contained a lot of background noise.

Whilst in some instances it's useful to retain this, generally audio vocal samples should ideally reduce 'noise' in the sample as much as possible.

Is there a tag for marking samples for 'audio-cleanup' so that contributors with the appropriate expertise and tools can produce "noise reduced" samples? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:13, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Aside - It would also be nice to know if there are 'free' and unencumbered algorithms that could be used to accomplish noise reduction ( The best one I found was proprietary, and not entirely lossless.)

@ShakespeareFan00: Audacity is free software and has noise reduction plugin by default. But I am unsure what you mean by lossless, since noise reduction algorithm will be lossy by the very definition, unless you can do that in metadata somehow... ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 18:51, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

The way newer versions of Audacity do that works quite well for me. But you need to give it an example of what it should consider as noise. Text Inconsistencies

There are two images on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Widerquist The first image is the one that has the problem: the description of the image 1 (Karl Widerquist, Al Jazeera interview, 2016) is not showing right underneath the image, even though it looks fine on Wikimedia. In the second image, the description is right underneath it.
