using portraits of the presidents

I am writing a book about the presidents. I would like to include a portrait of each president.

For the first 14 presidents Wiki shows portraits that are copyright free. I am assuming I can use these portraits without any special tags or designations.

When it comes to James Buchanan (who was president just before Lincoln and is rated by some historians as the worst US president) his portrait was in the public domain but required a US public domain tag. I am not sure what that is, how to display it and why for Buchanan and not the others.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This page is for general assistance in uploading media to the Commons repository. For usage information, please consult Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia and/or Commons:Licensing as well as the appropriate help desks (which is _not_ this one here).
Licensing tags or information are required of files used on Commons to prevent copyright infringements. Generally, PD content if free to use as one sees fit without restriction — save for personality rights restrictions. --dsprc (talk) 20:33, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

How many images we need to upload and what are the prizes?? Please reply as soon as possible. yours sincerely Kunal Shah — Preceding unsigned comment added by KDNM (talk • contribs) 07:12, 3 June 2016‎ (UTC)

@KDNM: Hello, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. There is no minimum amount of images needed to upload here on Commons. However, if you want to contribute, you can! Just make sure that your images are your own work and you want to release them under an irrevocable free license. We also have COM:FPC, COM:QIC, and COM:VIC, where you can nominate your images or others' images. And we also have monthly photo challenges where you can join in. There are no prizes though, but if you join in, we will appreciate it. Thanks, Poké95 08:14, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Problem with uploading video

Hi everybody I'm trying hard to upload my mp4 video file of Šútovský vodopád (waterfall in Slovakia), but despite of having firefogg, I'm not able to convert it and upload to commons. What may be a problem? I'm not good enough in this, and I'll appreciate your help and advices. If there's no help for me, I would be able to send the video to whoever of you. I don't consider necessary to upload it by myself, but upload it in general to improve commons. Thanks --Alekme (talk) 17:03, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Hmm, I don't think we tested UploadWizard with Firefogg in a long time. I'll try it out and see if I can reproduce the problem. Matma Rex (talk) 17:38, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
@Alekme: It actually seems to work fine for me, I was able to upload two different MP4 videos with UploadWizard+Firefogg (I was testing on a personal wiki). Could you email me the problematic file (matma.rex@gmail.com), or upload it somewhere else that I could download it from? Matma Rex (talk) 17:37, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
I have emailed you the file. It's a short video, try to upload it. Maybe it would be suitable to upload it as a .gif file, I don't know... --Alekme (talk) 16:38, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

It turns out that Firefogg can't handle filenames which contain accented characters, such as 'é' or 'ä'. A simple workaround is to rename the file, upload it, then correct the name in the last step. UploadWizard will soon show a warning about this (phab:T136879). I was able to upload the problematic file (that Alekme emailed me) as File:Video Šútovský vodopád.webm after renaming it. Uploading files

Hi, I have some files to upload that are in landscape format can you convert them to portrait format? The pages are partly coloured, do you prefer them in black and white or is colour OK? Regards Tony -- 19:47, 5 June 2016‎ GreenInkbottle

Not entirely sure what you're asking -- normally whether a photo is landscape or portrait will be determined by the nature of what's photographed (i.e. the orientation which makes gravity point downwards). If the photos appear improperly rotated when uploaded, there are ways to fix that. And some artistic photographers prefer to shoot in black-and-white in some contexts, but I presume that for most ordinary purposes Commons would prefer color, if there's a choice... hi!

if i upload a picture of a bird or animal , does it have to be from protection places only?

thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chhabra.sahil01 (talk • contribs) 18:28, 6 June 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi, you may upload any picture of a bird or other animal that you made. Please do take the time to identify the animal and give the file a good name. You might want to read about the first steps. --rimshottalk 22:24, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

regarding pic's title/caption

Can I upload pics with default names e.g. DSC001, DSC002? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pandeyom9 (talk • contribs) 02:16, 9 June 2016‎ (UTC)

  • Unlikely as it is possible a file already exists with such a common name and the system will reject it and notify you to select another title. If such a file does not exist it will be uploaded without problems. That said, please try to include a somewhat descriptive title for contributed media; instead of "photo.jpg" try "Lion Attacks Gazelle.jpg" or "Sistine Chapel Panorama.jpg" etc. --dsprc (talk) 02:51, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Even if there are no existing file with the same name, there are blacklist rules that prevent meaningless names, and it seems to work; Commons:Upload Wizard blacklist issues is full of people reporting that their meaningless filenames were "incorrectly" rejected. photo editing rules

hi , Can i send pics editied with photo editing softwares like picas , adobe photoshop tec? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinayaksuryavanshi (talk • contribs) 14:54, 10 June 2016‎ (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not have any policies or guidelines on what software you use to edit or create files that you upload here, as long as the content is free and useful for educational purposes. For photographs, using photo editing software for colour correction, cropping and rotating, sharpening or other standard cleanup work is more or less the norm. For more significant alterations, you may wish to add {{Retouched picture}} to the file description. Of course, at some point, photographs with extreme manipulations may no longer be considered useful for educational purposes. LX (talk, contribs) 17:24, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

You cannot overwrite this file

@MaryroseB54: Which files exactly are you having this problem with? Matma Rex (talk) 11:41, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
This File:Life_of_Orpheus_Greek_Mythology.svg and This File:Life_of_Orpheus_Greek_Mythology_-_(Spanish).svg. -- 11:51, 14 June 2016‎ MaryroseB54
MaryroseB54 -- Your account was created on 13:57, 11 June 2016, so I don't you'll be able to overwrite files until 4 days after that... AnonMoos (talk) 03:06, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Next Question

Hello !

I have uploaded two pictures for the contest - Upload Photos of Natural Heritage sites of India to help Wikipedia & win fantastic Prizes.

When I try to view the uploaded pictures I find it is uploaded alright but it doesn't really say that I have uploaded the pictures for the above mentioned contest.

How do I confirm that I have done everything alright?

Thanks for receiving the question and reading it. A hearty thanks if you can help me how. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gourabo (talk • contribs) 15:23, 11 June 2016‎ (UTC)

@Gourabo: please use the green "upload" button on Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2016 in India and the contest template will be added automatically. Holger1959 (talk) 01:42, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Upload of the french version of an svg image

Hello, I modified the "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Black_body.svg" image in order to create the file:Black_body_fr.svg. But when I try to upload it, I get the message: Blacklisted. How to upload a linked file such as the french version of an english one? Thank you for your help. Popocatomar (french beginner registered contributor) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Popocatomar (talk • contribs) 14:52, 22 June 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi User:Popocatomar! Based on your entry at Commons:Upload Wizard blacklist issues, the file you tried to upload was named "File:600px-Black body fr.svg". The "600px" in the name strongly suggests that what you tried to upload was not a translated SVG, but a (presumably translated) version based on the 600 pixel raster preview of File:Black body.svg, i.e. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/19/Black_body.svg/600px-Black_body.svg.png, with an incorrect file extension. The correct procedure would be to download the original SVG using the link below the image on the file description page and editing that with either a text editor or SVG capable software, such as Inkscape. CATEGORIES

It was observed that while uploading different photos, the field "Category" is bit confusing and it is mandetory. It is better to display a list of categories in the home page or while uploading. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Manas Chakrabarty (talk • contribs) 16:29, 23 June 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi Manas Chakrabarty! What did you find confusing about it? If you click the information symbol adjacent to the field, there's a popup that explains the purpose of it with a link to Commons:Categories. Please read that page, and if you still have questions, just come back here and ask. In the future, please try to avoid using overly generic top-level categories like Category:Belief and use more specific categories like these. It's not at all clear what you envision by "a list of categories in the home page or while uploading". I'm not sure you realise that there are many thousands of categories, so listing anything but a few top-level categories (as is already done on the Main Page under the "Content" heading) is not practical. Namaste, Rajborah123. I believe there is no limit on the number of entries. But... since it is a contest, you should try to contribute your best high-quality photographs, so you can beat the competition. --dsprc (talk) 11:19, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Bot request

Is there somewhere I can make a Bot request? The whole of the 'St David Awards' website is OGL, and I would like all the photos on the site to be uploaded to Commons: even the small ones. Full text is included with each photo. I've uploaded one. Thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 18:10, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
