Post about a living artist?

Hi there, I have prepared a post about a living contemporary artist summarising material entirely available in the public domain. Do I need her permission to post it? It contains no information not already public and no photographs of her or her work. Its just text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GlasgowGladys (talk • contribs) 01:37, 1 May 2016‎ (UTC)

I seem to be having difficulty with the titles of photos I'm trying to upload. What are the rules and restrictions to the identifying names and why do the titles need to be descriptive? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonEnglish (talk • contribs) 20:57, 4 May 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi DonEnglish! Please see Commons:File naming and come back here if you have more specific questions. LX (talk, contribs) 07:58, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Personal work -

I was a freelance photographer and have hundreds of photos of professional musicians and public officials that I have taken for various publications over the years. I own the copyright for all my work. I wish to upload them to wikipedia (See Bill Graham, Cool Papa for instance). I had one picture rejected - taken down - because someone thought it was in copyright violation. I do not want to waste time uploading my photos if they can be dismissed so easily just because some random person thinks it's not my property to share. I wish to post these for free usage. Thoughts? -- 12:19, 5 May 2016‎ Sarfatims

If you upload a photograph that looks like it was taken from an old magazine (but not old enough to be out of copyright), then that will definitely look suspicious (since random bozos are doing the same thing all the time without any entitlement) -- UNLESS accompanied by highly specific source information. But we do have a number of photographers who upload their past work here. Two things to keep in mind: First, make sure that you didn't take the photographs on a "work-for-hire" basis (since that would mean that your employers own the copyrights, not you). Second, it may be easier all around for you and the people who worry about copyright violations uploaded here if you establish your identity through COM:OTRS... I would like to upload that image on English Wikipedia for Polish złoty article, but I can't find one in the Commons in English. I know it was produced by somebody from the Bank of Poland(source: http://www.banknotypolskie.pl/monety/), but I am not sure whether it is allowed to do that. It also says something in Russian: "Данный файл является несвободным (не соответствует определению свободного произведения культуры). В соответствии с решением Фонда Викимедиа он может быть использован в статьях русского раздела Википедии только при соблюдении критериев добросовестного использования. Любое другое использование (как в русском разделе Википедии, так и вне её) может стать нарушением авторского права." like: (The file is not free(does not beat against the free reproduction of culture criteria). According to the decision of Wikimedia Fund [apparently Russian] it may be used then and only then, when one follows the criteria of rightful usage. Any other usage(in Russian wikipedia as well as outside it) may be the violation of author's/rs' (copy)rights.

The question is: May I use it as a helping tool to enlarge the article and make it better? Please write me soon. Thank you, Ukraroad PS. Write on my user page -- 06:35, 6 May 2016 Ukraroad

FILES NOT UPLOADING

Uploading starts but never finishes. This lasts for about half an hour now. Is there anything that can be done? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wejvi (talk • contribs) 2016-04-28T02:44:46‎ (UTC)

@Wejvi: Hello, do you use Upload Wizard? If yes, Upload Wizard is experiencing problems, and a lot of users are complaining about it. I recommend you to use the basic upload form for now. But if you are uploading a large file, it is a common issue that it will always fail, try using chunked upload. Hope this helps. Thanks! Poké95 08:46, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Uploading problems with upload wizard obviously still aren't resolved. Please term a date, when we will be able to work with it fluently again, thanks --Jeuwre (talk) 11:43, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Wiki loves Earth 2016, previously uploaded images

I uploaded a self-made image on Wikimedia long ago and planned to use it in the article about protected areas of Nizhny Novgorod.

Дубы долгожители Белинского НН

The question is: may I use this photo in Wiki loves Earth 2016? If yes, how can I link this file to this page? When I'm trying to upload the image through standard downloader, it just says that the file is already in Wikimedia.

Thank you, Demurgimpy (talk) 18:44, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Don't re-upload the image. Whether it can be part of "Wiki loves Earth 2016" is up to the people at that project; contact them at the relevant project page... AnonMoos (talk) 20:11, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Upload difficulties, sourced from Wikimedia Commons

I am trying to upload a map of the channels of Hawaii based off of another map from wikimedia commons, but my image is being rejected by the upload wizard, and the old way is not accepting my source or licensing. Thanks in advance, Houdinipeter (talk) 23:45, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

@Houdinipeter: What is the exact error message you're getting in UploadWizard? Perhaps you could try uploading the modified file to some file sharing site and linking it here, so that we could look at it and see if there's something wrong with it? Matma Rex (talk) 22:44, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
@Matma Rex: "This file might be corrupt, or have the wrong extension." The file. Houdinipeter (talk) 04:02, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
@Houdinipeter: This is quite interesting. I think the file is actually corrupted, some image viewers display it fine, others don't. For example, when trying to view it using Chrome, it shows the following error message: error on line 3 at column 35: xmlns:ns: '&ns_sfw;' is not a valid URI. I think MediaWiki just chooses to be cautious and rejects it, the error message shown when you try to upload it via Special:Upload is This SVG file contains an illegal namespace "&ns_sfw;". UploadWizard doesn't display these error details and that's a bug, filed as phab:T134663.
It seems like these are broken remains of some Adobe Illustrator metadata in the original file. No idea what editor you used to edit the image, but this looks like a bug in it; it should leave the metadata alone, or at least remove it cleanly, and not mess it up like this.
This is fairly easy to fix (just remove the broken stuff from the file), here's a modified version that should upload fine: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10983006/tmp/Channels-of-the-Hawaiian-Islands_fixed.svg . Matma Rex (talk) 19:42, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

There is no page named Standard & Poor's here on Wikimedia Commons. I'm guessing you mean either en:Standard & Poor's on English Wikipedia or tr:Standard & Poor's on Turkish Wikipedia. If you want to change which images are used in either of those pages, just edit the articles and replace the name of the file that's there now with the name of the file that you want to replace it with. I have a recent photo taken by the manager of the John Bowne House in Flushing Queens that I am trying to post to the Wikipedia article about the site. The photographer has released it for Common Attribution and it appears on WikiCommons now but I have not been able to either copy and paste the jpg information or upload it directly to the site. I would appreciate your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Margotellen (talk • contribs) 15:29, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Margotellen! It looks like the problem was that you provided the full URL of a thumbnail of the image in this edit instead of just the file name (Bowne House (3).JPG). For more information on how to insert pictures from Commons into articles on Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial back at the English Wikipedia project.
Since the photo comes from someone other than yourself, you will also need to get the copyright holder to e-mail a declaration of consent for the licensing. Please follow the instructions on the file description page and on your talk page. Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 17:08, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Upload Wizard not publishing files

I am using the Upload Wizard, but when I click on the final "Next", the process stops and the file doesn't get published. Why would this happen? Vzeebjtf (talk) 21:07, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

@Vzeebjtf: Generally speaking, when there's something about the file description that is blocked either by UploadWizard (e.g. no date given), or by Commons' abuse filter, title blacklist and other tools. You should see some error message about it, in either case. If you're not seeing one, can you please upload both the file you were trying to upload (assuming it's impossible to upload it here, try https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/file/upload/ or any file sharing service) and a screenshot of exactly what you're seeing? It would also help to know when exactly this occurred (we can often pinpoint the cause of the problem from the logs, but there are thousands of entries per day and we don't log user names etc., so I could only check a specific timeframe). Matma Rex (talk) 21:45, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Another issue similar to "Upload Wizard not publishing files"

Hello, I'm also having issues with uploading files to wiki loves earth photo competition (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wle-rs) - same issues as previously described in "Upload Wizard not publishing files". So the upload finishes successfully, I am able to input all the form data afterwards, but when i click on the final "Next" button, the form just disappears, and nothing happens. I can see that the file name was changed, I even have a remove button, but whatever I click causes the upload to be interrupted. Are there any limitations to file size, or resolution? You wrote that "uploads of multiple files would succeed, which is presumably why we missed it in testing". Anyone can make stupid mistakes, which is why testing is important. Upload tutorial or general information site about uploads needed

I am looking since half an hour for a general upload tutorial site or general information site for uploads. It seems, we don't have one similar to w:Wikipedia:Uploading images?! I am missing topics like the naming of file, assign a category, description text, transclude templates (we have thousands) and so on. The only information is at Commons:First steps/Uploading files#Uploading an image > Organizing and describing your upload:

„Enter a title for the image. Use plain, descriptive language. Then enter a description of the image and the date it was created. Help organize Wikimedia Commons by adding your file to applicable categories. When you are done, click Next.“

Should we stick with the First steps or should we have an overview site? What would be a good name to create such a page? Maybe Commons:Upload knowledge base or Commons:Upload handbook or Commons:Upload manual or Commons:Upload tutorial... --Mattes (talk) 07:34, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say "upload tutorial", "general information site" or "overview site." I believe the first steps tutorial is intended to be those things. Older versions were more verbose, but that was changed without much (any?) discussion. Generally, I'm sceptical of information pages attempting to duplicate existing policies and guidelines like Commons:File naming or Commons:Categories. They're subject to the same instruction creep as the pages they're based on, they easily become outdated, and the average person's attention span is now at a point where most people refuse to read even the shortest bits of instructions anyway. Upload tutorial or general information site about uploads needed

Hello! I've recently uploaded a photo of Polish politician to upgrade at his wikipedia page. I've uploaded it without the correct license, and it was taken down so i've contacted the photograph with license rights and he tried to upload the image but the Commons doesn't allow him mentioning that "this file was already uploaded". What should We do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Letmetryit (talk • contribs) 12:37, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Letmetryit: Have the copyright holder (typically the photographer) follow the procedure described at Commons:OTRS to submit a licensing declaration to our permission archive. Be sure to mention the name of the file in the e-mail. I don't see any deleted files in your log, but based on this edit that you made on English Wikipedia, I'm guessing the file in question was File:Radoslaw Sikorski portrait.JPG. (That file was uploaded by User:KubaaJ. Are you using multiple accounts, and if so, why?) If everything is in order, the volunteer processing the e-mail will ensure that the file is undeleted. LX (talk, contribs) 08:08, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

It's not my multiple account, it's a account of a guy that "mixed" me into the whole Wikipedia thing, he has broader account options, so I've asked him to upload photo. Anyway, I've contacted the photographer and everything is ok now, thanks for the help anyway and have a good day:)! --Letmetryit (talk) 08:45, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Not unless the box design is below the threshold of originality required for copyright protection (essentially applicable only to boxes with nothing but text on a solid background) or the copyright holder has approved publication under a free license (which is extremely unlikely). How can one determine if an image is really available under GNU FDL?

Hello. I am planning on writing an article about David Bacon for the English Wikipedia and have just uploaded "David Bacon.jpg". The website on which I found this image is http://www.keywiki.org/File:2402-275x275.jpg and, according to that page, "Content is available under GNU Free Documentation License 1.2". I've been unable to determine the author of that image and am consequently unable to confirm the truth of that statement. I understand that since the author is at this point unknown, there is no way to determine the status of the image and, consequently, wikimedia will undoubtedly delete the file. Is there some way I can determine the status prior to uploading it to wikimedia? Thank you.--Akhooha (talk) 16:34, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Running the image through Tineye.com shows it appears to have been grabbed from http://www.peoplesworld.org/pww-forum-underscores-role-of-people-s-media/, where it was published more than 20 months earlier, so I'd say it's very unlikely that the license is valid. LX (talk, contribs) 17:58, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply and for recommending Tineye.com. I had tried google image search but came up with no results. Tineye is much better. "keywiki" seems like a pretty shady website and I'm not surprised that they lifted the image from People's World. Sorry to have wasted wikimedia commons time. But now I'd like to raise another question: that Peoples' World page from which "keywiki" lifted the image (http://www.peoplesworld.org/pww-forum-underscores-role-of-people-s-media/) states at the bottom: "Except where otherwise noted, content on www.peoplesworld.org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License"; following that link brings you to conditions of non-commercial use as long as it's attributed, and offers the following for attribution:

<a rel="cc:attributionURL" property="cc:attributionName" href="http://www.peoplesworld.org">www.peoplesworld.org</a> / <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/">CC BY-NC-ND 3.0</a>

I'm not sure how to use that if I were to upload the image to wikimedia, or if it would make a difference in wikimedia's acceptance. Thanks for your help.--Akhooha (talk) 23:06, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
@Akhooha: Hello, CC-BY-NC-ND-3.0-US is not compatible with our licensing policy. So that image cannot be uploaded to Commons. Thanks, Poké95 00:37, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

This way, one can see when a question has already been answered, so that volunteers don't end up doing redundant work. It also allows others to benefit from being able to search the archives and find answers to their questions. Even if there had been a reason to make an exception, you haven't enabled e-mail from other users in your account preferences, so sending you e-mail isn't possible.

@Exploringlife: Do you still experience this problem now? The faulty CentralNotice code was just reverted. Matma Rex (talk) 15:12, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
I'm using Windows 10 with Internet Explorer, the wizard just return to normal when I tested few mins before. Except this 7 hours failure, still have the risk of system crash when upload around 10 pictures or above each time, I think commons wizard is not compatible with Windows 10, actually I used Windows 7 before but don't have the upload limit problem. My Video: "Pompano Bill Roast"

Upload did not go in from "desktop selection area". It may be because there is music on the video, which I ordered and paid for from iTunes. Thank you, Rex — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rex Coston (talk • contribs) 01:44, 27 May 2016‎ (UTC)

First, please sign your posts using --~~~~. Secondly, you might have bought the rights to listen to the music, privately, you probably didn't buy the rights put the music online and you certainly did not buy the rights to publish the music under a free license. A free license is required for Commons, however. As for the video: did you make it yourself from material you created entirely yourself? How does it fit within Commons' scope? --rimshottalk 15:25, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Naming problem at audio file upload

Hi all, I've just uploaded a load of 193 audio files with the upload wizard (in ordinary steps of 50 files). Problem: The wizard denies to upload some of the files with names that aren't really similar. Message: There are 4 errors with the forms above. Correct the errors, and try submitting again.
Four was the number of the first bunch of 50 files. Tallied up there were 13 current examples:
1. I tried to upload De-Streichholz.ogg and the wizard complained: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Streichholzschächtelchen.ogg and replace it there.
2. De-Wirkung.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Wirkungsquantum.ogg and replace it there.
3. De-wünschen.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-wünschenswerter.ogg and replace it there.
4. De-Zimmer.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Zimmermannshammer.ogg and replace it there.
You'll agree that the filenames are quite different (content anyhow).
5. De-kulturell.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-kulturell beeinflusst.ogg and replace it there.
6. De-reizen.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-reizender.ogg and replace it there.
7. De-Musikinstrument is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Musikinstrument-article.ogg and replace it there.
8. De-Fluch.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Flucht.ogg and replace it there.
9. De-Holz.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Holz vor der Hütte haben.ogg and replace it there.
10. De-Ablehnung.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Ablehnungen.ogg and replace it there.
11. De-abwerten.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-abwertend.ogg and replace it there.
12. De-Auffassung.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-Auffassungsgabe.ogg and replace it there.
13. De-außen.ogg is followed by: A file with this name exists already. If you want to replace it, go to the page for File:De-außenpolitisch.ogg and replace it there.

No, I don't want to replace any of these files. I want to add new ones with fairly similar, but only similar, names. For now I helped myself renaming "my" pronunciation examples adding an _A at the end of the name (De-Streichholz_A.ogg) to make the upload work. Additionally I added a category: Problem with audio file naming and inserted the 13 files.
@admins:
The renaming isn't really a solution. So,
A) is there any chance to rename an audio file for a normal user when uploaded? Is there at least a chance to rename a file I created? If not, please rerename the files to the originally intended names (without _A). This seems to be the only way, that different wiktionary-bots will find these pronunciation examples on commons and link it to their lemmas. After renaming please delete the files from category Problem with audio file naming or give me a hint.
B) please arrange the rewriting of the upload wizard code to a less strictly approach regarding the filenames. To be honest, if there isn't a file with exactly the same name we don't need this upload ban. The current state means a quite disruptive process with the additional depicted problem of non-linking to other wiktionaries than the German one.
Thank you for your support. --Jeuwre (talk) 09:35, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi ColonialGrid, thank you for your fast support. Here I'm a still a tyro, next times having technical problems I use your mentioned links. --Jeuwre (talk) 12:48, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Not a problem. However, I have now created an additional problem that will likely require admin assistance, the file suffix changed with the rename and I do not have the techincal ability to change it from .oga to .ogg (I run into the same 'this file exists' problem). Regrettably Jeuwre has informed me via email that the files must be in .ogg to be used properly, would an admin be able to have a go renaming the files, else, is there a phabricator ticket on this? Sorry to have been as much a problem as a help, Jeuwre. (And yes, I do get the irony of posting for help on a board that I only minutes earlier told someone was unsuitable, but, we're here now). ColonialGrid (talk) 12:54, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi ColonialGrid, I'm sorry, when I tried to upload De-Holz.de with the old form I got the following message:
Upload warning: A file with a similar name exists: Name of the uploading file: File:De-Holz.ogg, Name of the existing file: File:De-Holz.oga, Do you perhaps want to use a more distinctive name? This file is a duplicate of the following file: De-Holz.oga
That's not exactly progress. Esp as I'm not able to erase my own files. I still recommend to rename the files. Or is there anybody out there who supports and is able to erase these 13 files containing ".oga" swiftly? --Jeuwre (talk) 14:06, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Not a problem. Glad I could help and that we finally got there with a solution to your problem. Best of luck with uploading the rest of your files, and I hope you don't run into this odd problem again. ColonialGrid (talk) 14:35, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

The UploadWizard bug which was causing this issue is fixed now, and the fix will be deployed to Commons per the usual schedule next Wednesday. Sorry about that! Matma Rex (talk) 15:11, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Question about naming and category of an image

I find it difficult to name an image and name a category. 1. Suppose I take a photograph of a famous temple and mention the original name but the original name of the temple must have been applied to the similar picture previously taken by someone else as the temple is a famous one and several photos must have been taken. 2. Is there a list of categories which we may read and apply the relevant category to my picture? --Subas Chandra Rout (talk) 06:10, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

If the temple is even slightly famous, we will most likely have a category for it already. Just search for the name and you will find something like Category:Adinath Jain Temple Khajuraho. Open the image's description pages to see how they have been categorized, most likely you will find all the categories you need right there. As for the image name: be specific, if XY temple.jpg is already taken, try XY temple in 2016.jpg or XY temple from the east at sunset.jpg. For a full guide on categorization, including how to find categories, see COM:CAT. --rimshottalk 21:34, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
