See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Greene_County,_Arkansas

Specifically, I've uploaded to Entry #9/image. Went throgh uplaod and all seems well but image is not showing up.....but does show up in Wiki Commons.

Any help is appreciated....Colin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colinhester (talk • contribs) 01:51, 01 April 2016 (UTC)

If you mean en:File:Highfill-McClure_HouseHouse.jpg / File:Highfill-McClure_HouseHouse.jpg, then I don't see any particular problem with it. By the way, you upload an image to Commons or Wikipedia, then you edit an article on Wikipedia to include the image (you don't "upload" directly to an article... can't upload

Hi, I've uploaded thousand of images, but since one or two weeks ago I can't do it with the "Upload Wizard". After select a file(s), the system keeps uploadind without finish the first step and do not show the "next" button to pass to the license step. I'm using firefox 43.0.1, thanks.--amador (talk) 20:32, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

The "Upload wizard" seems to be in a perpetual cycle of breaking and fixing here. If you don't need hand-holding, then the basic upload form almost always works. AnonMoos (talk) 04:37, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I usually need, cause I'm uploading images with WLM templates which send parameters (like https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&descriptionlang=ca&description=Esgl%C3%A9sia+de+Sant+Esteve+%28Olot%29}}{{BIC|RI-51-0007065&lat=42.182222&lon=2.488333&categories=Church+of+Sant+Esteve%2C+Olot. However, now I just tried to upload from my workplace PC (same Firefox version) and it runs !. I'll tried again from home. Thanks a lot !--amador (talk) 11:21, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

account not activated yet and urgently required

Hello. I'm a new freelancer, new to Wikipedia. I tried to open an account 30 minutes ago to unload some digital files ( gathered Los Angeles Times, Weekly times and some no much reknown food magazines which talk about a Hot dogs restaurant in Los Angeles. They apparently have no restrictions.

Well, once my email was confirmed I received another message telling me I'm supposed to wait at least four days to get my account activated. If this is it is too much time for me. I was assigned a writing project due to be submitted today at night.

Could anybody confirm if I'm to wait that time to get my account activated? Is there any other solutions?

thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hugostuardo (talk • contribs) 15:35, 4 April 2016‎ (UTC)

@Hugostuardo: You are already logged in and you can upload images to Wikimedia Commons (the page you are now, which is the media repository for Wikipedia). The 4 days are for slightly more advanced stuff like overwriting existing files. But be aware that files you "gathered" from newspapers are almost certain to bear copyrights and thus are illegal to upload here. It's not enough that they "apparently have no restrictions", you must be absolutely sure that they are in line with Commons:Licensing – otherwise they will be deleted quickly. Hope that helps, --El Grafo (talk) 16:11, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Screenshots of ISIS videos?

Would screenshots from ISIS propaganda videos count as public domain? If not, who would even have the copyright over them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanders4Pres (talk • contribs) 07:06, 6 April 2016‎ (UTC)

@Sanders4Pres: I think they won't count as public domain. ISIS holds the copyright over them, even though they are terrorists (if someone opposes this, then IMO). Poké95 11:38, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
That's true to whichever extent it's true that ISIS/Daesh is a legal person able to hold copyright; otherwise the copyright belongs to the individuals creating the videos. The fact that the copyright holder(s) is/are unlikely to be willing and able to take anyone to court is irrelevant for Commons' purposes.
User:Sanders4Pres: You waited for an answer for exactly 10 minutes before you went ahead and uploaded File:Loon Lake 2014.png with the ludicrous claim that it was created by an officer or employee of the US Federal Government. If you weren't going to wait for an answer, why even bother asking? LX (talk, contribs) 20:08, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Namespace issue

I've been trying to update File:Map of Mexico, gay rights.svg to re-color a state to reflect a change in law. However, the update fails giving me this error message:

I did not modify the original namespace from the existing SVG file, but merely the fill color of the state in question. The W3C says that the namespace is correct. Why doesn't the update wizard accept the change? Fortguy (talk) 07:57, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

XHTML is a rejiggering of HTML (which is for general web-pages, not vector images) to fit with XML syntax. An SVG file should be XML, but not XHTML. I couldn't say what the exact problem is without seeing the beginning of the file... AnonMoos (talk) 09:31, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
The problem was caused by code adding CSS to display the full-scale map centered on a black background. This code was probably added by a Commons bot. After removing the offending code, I was able to update the map. Fortguy (talk) 18:02, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

question

hi, how can I do to upload my biography on Wikipedia? thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maria florencia ialorenzi mitrece (talk • contribs) 02:59, 14 April 2016‎ (UTC)

The first step would be to go to Wikipedia. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into to avoid falling victim to phishing scams), you'll notice that you are currently not on Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons, a repository of images, audio, video and other media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Since we're a media repository, we do not host articles. See Commons:Project scope/Summary.
Secondly, you do not "upload" articles to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a wiki, which means the articles are edited directly and incrementally, rather than being uploaded as static files. See en:Help:Editing.
Thirdly, you should not be creating articles about yourself, and unless you are a notable person, your biography does not belong on Wikipedia. The policies and guidelines I've linked to apply to English Wikipedia. If you have questions about them, refer to en:Wikipedia:Help desk. Other language editions have similar rules and helpdesks of their own. LX (talk, contribs) 12:02, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Deleting and then re-uploading a photo

Hi - I uploaded a photo for C. K. Gunsalus a while back but accidentally put that it was my own work. I have permission from the creator to use the photo, but now I'm not sure how to delete the old photo and upload a new one that notes the correct permissions that I have to use it. Please help! Procedures

Hi! I am new to wikipedia BT I don't know what procedure should I follow to upload photos. Do u suggest me about uploading photo's? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.200.246.202 (talk • contribs)

To upload photos here (commons) you need an account, and you should have read COM:L about free licenses (the comic is a good intro), and an idea why it might useful (educational or similar). To upload photos on a Wikipedia, e.g., enwiki, you need an account there and a reason depending on which Wikipedia you have in mind. –Be..anyone 💩 16:01, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Can't Upload a video

Hi there, I have a question about the uploading of a video here in wiki commons. The video is from youtube, it plays the hymn of "UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE", which is the university where :Abraham Poblete Poblete studied. It's short (about 2 minutes of length) and it's already converted to OGG Theora. The problem comes when I try to upload the video to wiki commons and it gets stuck forever at 70% or 80%, so I'm not able to upload it. What should I do to fix the problem? thanks. Uploading any file

I would like to know how to upload pictures that aren't my work but don't have any copyright on them, or uploading the photo without the need for permission. Same goes for mp3 files that don't have copyright on them. My photo is about a certain video game character that has not been added to the Wiki. Rakeeb100 (talk) 20:37, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

@Rakeeb100: So you want to upload a video game character on Commons? Sorry, but you must not upload it here, because that character is most likely copyrighted, unless if it is simple enough. Also, uploading mp3 files is not possible, for now, because mp3 is not open source, meaning, it is copyrighted too. You can convert it into an ogg file, which is open source and acceptable on Commons. Also, if you really want to upload that video game character you're saying, please upload it instead in the English Wikipedia as fair use. Thanks, Poké95 23:15, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Upgrading an image

I have upgraded the file Bridge2210e.JPG to the higher-res version Footbridge over Aeron.JPG. What is the procedure for linking the two versions on the same page under the same filename, please? Bjenks (talk) 16:11, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

If the images differ only in resolution, then the second image should have overwritten the first, instead of having a separate name. But is it by Commons:User:Bjenks or en:User:Aeronian? AnonMoos (talk) 22:42, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
Explained on Aeronian, alternate/old account. For a fix I think [[User:Bjenks|Brian Jenkins]] on the new file and {{SD|G7+F8 (author request: dupe) of [[:File:Footbridge over Aeron.JPG]] needs redirect}} on the old file could work. –Be..anyone 💩 02:47, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Uploading an image another person made but for free use by of person portrayed

I want to upload a photo of a Czech writer (actually I already did, but it was removed as possible copyright violation, for I did not know, how to fill in the licence details).

The photo was done a decade ago by a friend of the person pictured, done entirely for the free use for publicity or whatever need by the person pictured. Now the person uses it as his FB profile photo, several online published interviews with him aslo include the photo, which he gave to the journalists.

I asked the writer who made the picture and whether it is surely OK to freely distribute it and he said the name of his friend (actually his friends` daughter) who did it and said that she did it fully for his use, to be used for any purpose in any place.

He is not in contact with that original author of the picture anymore, so it would be difficult to ask for explicit consent of the author, but since she explicitely did it for him to have a photo for publications, etc, it is obvious that it is OK to use it at the Wiki as well.

Now how to upload it as there is no option "I am not the author, but the author gave consent" to be chosen while uploading? -- 22:41, 28 April 2016‎ Yak~cswiki

Yak~cswiki -- in this context, "free use for publicity" sounds a lot like it's a standard promotional image, but promotional images are not allowed on Commons unless there's an explicit free license dedication which meets Commons' standards. You may have to go through COM:OTRS... -- AnonMoos (talk) 00:09, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Upload derivative work

I would like to upload an English translation of File:Carte_topographique_du_Japon-fr.svg, so basically a derivative of a file on wikimedia-commons. When I was doing such last time (a long time ago), there was a tool for uploading such derivative works, which would fill in all the licensing stuff etc. Does this tool still exist? Where? If not, how should I write the licnesing part in the image description in this particular case? bamse (talk) 21:58, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Minimally, you should include "{{AttribSVG|Carte_topographique_du_Japon-fr.svg}}" in the source field, credit User:Bourrichon in the author field, and keep the same license (CC-BY-SA 2.0 fr). AnonMoos (talk) 19:06, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
@Bamse: Hello, the tool I think you're saying is derivativeFX. derivativeFX is a tool hosted on Toolserver. However, Toolserver is down and replaced by Tool Labs, and derivativeFX is not moved to Tool Labs. Thanks, Poké95 12:06, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Pinging bamse Poké95 12:30, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes, derivativeFX is what I used before. Are there any plans to have this in Tool Labs or elsewhere? I think it is quite useful. The map I uploaded to File:Topographic map Japan-en.svg. Hope everything is correct with the licenses there. bamse (talk) 12:46, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Well, I don't think Luxo will move their tool to Tool Labs. See Commons talk:Upload#future of derivativeFX. I hope somebody will adopt this tool and move it to Tool Labs... Poké95 12:51, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

How to upload directory

I have just joined the Commons. I have a large number of files I want to upload. They are public domain playing cards that I have created from from public-domain sources. I have four decks, each in SVG, PNG and GIF format. I also have sprite sheets in all formats. You can see the structure at https://github.com/saulspatz/SVGCards. I need help on how I should go about uploading these. Basically, I'd like to upload the Decks folder, preserving its structure somehow, and I also would like to direct people to the github repo. Is this too much stuff to upload? The graphics total about 73 MB.Saulspatz (talk) 14:00, 30 April 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saulspatz (talk • contribs)

SVG files (if they render correctly) are generally preferred to raster formats here. Commons doesn't have the concept of directories, but does have categories... AnonMoos (talk) 03:31, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Pinging Saulspatz Poké95 03:36, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Okay, can someone explain to me about categories? Are you saying that everything but SVG is unwelcome? I am not an artist, but a programmer. I have, over the years, seen a lot of complaining from programmers on the Web about the difficulty of finding free card decks. PNGs and GIFs are much more useful than SVGs for the purpose, and the people, I have in mind. If my contributions are unwelcome here, please tell me, and I'll go away. If not, please help me.Saulspatz (talk) 14:00, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

@Saulspatz: No no, that's not what AnonMoos. meant about SVG, PNG, and GIF. I agree with AnonMoos that it should be SVG, because a SVG card has little filesize compared to PNG and GIF. But SVG is not always smaller than PNG and GIF. So that's why SVG should be used for simple images, such as a circle, card, etc. And for categories, you may read it here. PNG, GIF, JPG, PDF, OGG, WEBM, SVG, and more file formats are welcome (see Commons:File types). Thanks, Poké95 23:55, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
