Can these images be uploaded

I have very little knowledge of the copyright law. I wanted to know if uploading the images given in the Download section of this page is okay. The creator of the images has given this permission:

The images in this section are free for use in news articles, school projects and promotion of His/Her/Its Greater Glory.

If uploading these is okay, then what options should I select in the file upload wizard? --Gauravsood0289 (talk) 18:40, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

No. Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use, modify and distribute for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Content that may only be used for a specific set of enumerated purposes clearly does not meet that requirement. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 19:41, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Yhhue91 (talk) 05:18, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

the file about Rampart, Alaska is about one man. May I add copy on my uncle James Climie who lived there 1898-1926

Born in Kilmarnock,Scotland he returned there in 1908 to marry Agnes Fraser but she was in Johannesburg,S.A. She then came to Rampart where they were married, Had 2 boys. The elder james was in the US Marines and retired as Commander. James sen. moved to Anchorage in 1926 worked on the railway and was elected Nat. Pres. of their Trade Union in 1935. I think this would be an Appropriate contribution for the Rampart section which I would expand for inclusion. He actually did work a placer mine.I have a copy of James registration card for the 1918 census. May I proceed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Valleemaud (talk • contribs) 15:44, 1 February 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi Valleemaud! Your question seems to be about adding information to Wikipedia. However, you are not on Wikipedia right now. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you're on Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Upload wizard not loading

The upload wizard appears to be down. How can I find out when it will be working again? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 18:25, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

I just experienced a glitch for the past 1 hour and 15 minutes or so where edit pages had no CSS styling (when using Monobook). I don't know if it's related, but it seems likely. I'm guessing someone who doesn't quite know what they're doing was fiddling with things on the site. Again. Anyway, it seems to work for me right now. LX (talk, contribs) 19:06, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I am experiencing a problem where once I select the image I want to upload, there is no way to proceed any further. Any Help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ADPartners (talk • contribs) 19:32, 1 February 2016‎ (UTC)
The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time (it seems to be working for me at the moment), but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, freezing browsers, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 20:22, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Upload a PDF file of 248 pages

To Whom It May Concern: I actually could not upload, and/or did not know how to do (!) upload the PDF files. :)) Please help me to upload a large PDF files of 248 pages of my Vietnamese phrasebook. It's been on sale for more than 10 years now on Amazon and Google Books. Now I would like to share it with everyone on Wikimedia Commons. I have already uploaded the file name SIMPLE VIETNAMESE FOR YOU TIẾNG VIỆT DỄ HIỂU CHO QUÍ VỊ, but it is only the book covers. that's not the book content. I will send you an email with attachment of this PDF files, is it ok with you? Please help me. Thank you so much for your assistance. Sincerely yours. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thuy-Trieu Dong-Hai (talk • contribs) 05:04, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

First, please read Commons:Project scope, particularly Commons:Project scope#PDF and DjVu formats, to determine whether this content would be within our project scope, or whether the material would be better represented as editable wiki text directly on a relevant project (as part of wikt:Wiktionary:Phrasebook, for example). Secondly, for content that has previously been published without a free license, it is a requirement that the permission to publish the content under a free license be sent in via e-mail to our permission archive. As for your question: no, there is no reason to believe that the photo you link to is in the public domain or published under a free license. Open source thoughts, the 2nd

I got an Spreadsheet, which is the core source to generate some images. It is made with LibreOffice's Calc and has ".ods" as file name extension. To share it with the community, I want to upload it. Again, similar to my other question, ".ods" files aren't allowed.

What's the recommended way to share? -- Pemu (talk) 11:52, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Tabular data is best represented using a table or as CSV (which can be selected when saving the file), pasted on the file description or the corresponding talk page. Charts can be exported as SVG by right-clicking on them and selecting "Export as Image". LX (talk, contribs) 20:26, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

"Non-copyright" book

Can I upload this book? The book is "Non-Copyright". Regards, -Nimit (talk) 07:20, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

I would say no. The file description at archive.org has a "Public Domain Mark", which just means that someone believes it's in the public domain, but that doesn't seem to hold up to scrutiny. The public domain claim seems to be based on the statement on page (iv), which reads "Non-Copyright. This work may be reproduced, translated and published in any language without any special permission provided that it is true to the original and that a mention is made of the source." If the author wants to impose requirements like remaining true to the original (essentially prohibiting derivative versions other than faithful translations, a requirement that is incompatible with Commons' licensing requirements) and mentioning the source, the only thing that makes those requirements enforceable is copyright, so the intent is clearly not to waive the copyright. Frage zu "gemeinfrei" bei Bild aus Ausstellungskatalog

Hallo,

--Maimaid (talk) 21:12, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello

Hello, I'm beginner and wanted to know how to load an image without it being deleted and also wanted to know how to identify whether or not you can load the image. Thank you Damon Felton (talk) 12:00, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

That's kind of a broad question. A good place to start is Commons:First steps. Commons:Project scope/Summary explains what this project is about and what sort of content you can and cannot upload. Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter has specific examples. Commons:Licensing has the full details of our licensing policy, and most deletions are a result of violations of that. Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion and Commons:Deletion policy has information on other possible reasons for deletions. LX (talk, contribs) 19:01, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Is it okay/legal to upload screenshot of OS

Hi, I wish to upload a screenshot of CyanogenMod to the CyanogenMod Wikipedia page. I do not own CyanogenMod. Is it legal to upload this file, and if so, how should I upload it (what copyright settings do I need to choose)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Calvin Hogg (talk • contribs) 04:05, 07 February 2016 (UTC)

It depends on what is shown on the screen. If there are non-free icons on the screen, it doesn't matter that the underlying operating system is free software, so you need to be able to account for everything that's shown on the screen. File:CM 11 Homescreen on Trebuchet Launcher.png (currently in use on that page) seems to be a pretty good example of how to do this. See Commons:Screenshots for more information. @Vivaelcelta: Excuse my curiosity, but why do you need an SVG graphic for quotation marks from different languages? Look how they did it in the English language Wikipedia, for example. Hi,

I am the owner of the site FactReserve.com which provides biographical facts about popular personalities in the form of images. Images used in that site are downloaded and modified from other sites who have given the permission to use with modification under these images.

Can I upload those images here and if so How? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Factreserve (talk • contribs) 07:08, 17 February 2016‎ (UTC)

Generally: no. Firstly, the only one who can provide a legally valid permission to use a copyrighted image is the legitimate copyright holder. Secondly, a permission for you to use an image is not sufficient for it to be hosted on Commons. We can only host copyrighted content if the copyright holder allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes.
  • File:Musk Space Mission.jpg is based on a distorted version of File:Elon Musk gives tour for President Barack Obama.jpg. That photo is in the public domain because it was created by an employee of the US Federal Government (see the file description of the original for details). This one could theoretically be kept if the file description is cleaned up, but I don't see how it fits Commons' project scope.
  • File:Marilyn Monroe Childhood.jpg is based on a non-free photo from Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images. If you obtained a license from Getty Images, it almost certainly did not include sublicensing rights. If someone else claimed to give you permission to use it, they probably didn't understand what you were asking them. This is an unambiguous copyright violation, especially as you named your own site as "author".
  • File:Oprah Childhood Days.jpg is based on a non-free photo by Cliff Watts for Harpo, Inc. If you obtained a license from them, it almost certainly did not include sublicensing rights. If someone else claimed to give you permission to use it, they probably didn't understand what you were asking them. This is also an unambiguous copyright violation.
Copyright issues aside, all of these images appear to be outside of Commons' project scope. At least it's not clear to me how superimposing unsourced, non-editable, non-accessible text onto images would improve their educational usefulness. LX (talk, contribs) 17:33, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

It's probably going to be very hard for anyone to help unless you provide more than eight words to describe what you did, how far into the process you got and what problems you encountered. Did you use a browser? Which one? Which page did you go to? Or did you use an app? Which one? Which step in the process did you have problems with? Did you get an error message, did nothing happen when you pressed some button, or did nothing happen when you pressed some button? LX (talk, contribs) 17:33, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Users editing without being logged into a user account (as you are) cannot upload files and typically don't have user pages (which I assume is what you mean by "profile"). Please see Commons:First steps. Note that Commons and the other Wikimedia projects are not social network sites. User pages and user page images exist to support communication between contributors to the project, so if you don't plan to contribute to a Wikimedia project, there are more appropriate venues to tell the world about yourself. Latitude/longitude

For some reason I can't fill the latitude/longitude fields in the UploadWizard. I can select the description in the box, but that's all. Szczureq (talk) 11:25, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Szczureq! The Upload Wizard requires geographical coordinates (if you provide them) to be in decimal format (for example -23.55,-46.63 for São Paulo). You can use this tool to convert from degrees, hours and minutes to decimal. Google Maps will also tell you coordinates in decimal format if you right-click on a point and select "What's here?" from the menu. LX (talk, contribs) 11:36, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
That's not the point. I cannot enter ANY value in the dialog box, incl. decimal degrees. Szczureq (talk) 12:41, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
I think I see what you mean. It looks like it's a matter of bad user interface design. Nothing happens if you click the labels inside the input boxes (as you may be tempted to do – it's what I did initially). You can only place the cursor in the box if you click in the blank space to the left of the label. I wonder who thought that was a good idea. LX (talk, contribs) 14:58, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
I like to put the coords in the file's EXIF beforehand, using the drag & drop map in Google Picasa or MS Pro Photo Tools. No numbers have to pass through my leaky little mind. Many other programs can do this. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:32, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

I knew what was the problem. There is a file that has the same name to my file. But there was no notification about it so I've spent one day to solve this problem. I think it is essential to notify what is a problem when people can't upload images. --Organicreaction (talk) 13:52, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
@Organicreaction: The default upload interface to Wikimedia Commons, called Upload Wizard is in the state of perpetual brokenness. Indefinitely spinning wheels, missing buttons to move forward or unhelpful or missing error messages are only a few of its issues. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but moments in which it works are rare. If you care that your issue is being worked on, report it at Phabricator (create a task and under project type "UploadWizard"). If you don't just use Commons:upload and you'll get a robust old form. -- Rillke(q?) 20:07, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Also note, there is a limit for new user accounts, but it's not a daily one. You just can't upload more than 8 files at once. Also you might be interested in the project I am working on (example)? Would be glad if you'd provide your feedback there. -- Rillke(q?) 20:11, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

@Mariannakorol: Simple portraits of people are only really in scope if the depicted person, or the photographer, is notable. There is a minor exception, for editors to upload self portraits for use on their user pages at the projects where they contribute, but you don't appear to have ever edited beyond uploading this singe image.
