Please can i upload photos from a blog of this website ( sitew.com ) ?

Please can i upload photos from a blog of this website ( sitew.com ) ? if the user allow me by e-mail to use his photos on Wikipedia ? and if it's possible i must upload the photos under which license ? Cordially,--84.55.161.149 14:25, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

No, permission to use on Wikipedia is not sufficient for Commons to host the content in question. The copyright holder (who may or may not be the blog user – you haven't provided enough information to even make an educated guess) would have to agree to publish the content under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes. See Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 20:27, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
@LX: I had received an e-mail from the website holders allow me to upload the photos so requests permission from the user, now i am waiting a permission from the user of the blog to be able to upload the photos to the Encyclopedia. I am true ? Cordially,--84.55.161.148 07:52, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Again, permission to use on Wikipedia or permission to upload is not sufficient. What's needed is an explicit permission to publish the content under a free license. Commons:OTRS contains detailed instructions and a standard release statement. And again, you need to make sure the permission comes from the right person, namely the copyright holder of the content, which is typically the photographer. If the blog author is not the copyright holder of the photos, they cannot issue a valid permission. LX (talk, contribs) 16:18, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but it's not at all clear what you're asking. Do you need help finding a video that you don't have, or do you need help uploading a video that you do have? Or have you found a video that you can't watch? Perhaps you could try to rephrase your question, maybe with some punctuation? If English is not your first language, feel free to use whatever you're comfortable with. LX (talk, contribs) 21:05, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

quality of photo?

what should be the quality of photo? like mega pixels? can a photo captured from mobile phone can be uploaded or it should be only from DSLR cam? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Myanjik (talk • contribs) 02:22, 2 September 2015‎ (UTC)

As long as it's free and realistically useful for an educational purpose, content of any quality is welcome. Of course, higher-resolution content created with better equipment by a good photographer is often preferred when available, but especially for subjects where we don't have a lot of illustrations, a lesser quality illustration is a better addition than none.

Dirk1981 (talk) 15:18, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

I think I've identified the root cause of this, and I've raised the question of how to resolve it at the administrators' noticeboard. LX (talk, contribs) 18:42, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Images removed from wiki commons

Hi,

I have two photos of Gene Pierson who has a wiki page. They were provided to me by Gene Pierson himself to add to the site because there is only one up there at the moment. As the creator of the photo (me) and the subject of the photo (Gene Pierson) both give our consent for the photos to be on wiki commons, why was it removed? The images were gene_bandstand_1970.jpg and Spinning_the_moments.jpg and I am unable to upload them now.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jodiebrownlee (talk • contribs) 19:16, 3 September 2015‎ (UTC)

The reason mentioned in the deletion log for both File:Gene bandstand 1970.jpg and File:Spinning the moments.jpg is "No permission". That usually means that someone has found the photos published elsewhere, or that there is another reason to require additional verification via e-mail to confirm that the information on the file description is accurate. Instructions for how to provide that verification are on your user talk page as well as on the page linked to from the deletion logs. If you follow those instructions and everything checks out, the files will be restored. You should not attempt to recreate previously deleted content yourself. LX (talk, contribs) 19:44, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
And if that answer looks familiar, it's because it's essentially the same one I gave you three years ago. :-) LX (talk, contribs) 19:50, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Uploading problem

I scanned an image I want to upload and tried to select it,but I clicked on the image in the photostream (I'm on an iPad) and the white checkmark in the blue circle and it didn't work. Is there a problem with uploading images on mobile? Hop on Bananas (talk) 19:55, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Never mind that,I figured it out (click on "Done"). But now I'm trying to upload a file and I got everything but one. The image in question is from 1940 but I don't know the exact date,so I tried to choose January 1 1940 (is that okay). But there's no way you can submit the date-there's nothing to click and if I undock the keyboard, the date disappears. And you can't upload a file without it. Hop on Bananas (talk) 20:11, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Never mind,I figured that out too (click the pencil icon and type in the year). Hop on Bananas (talk) 20:14, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Replace GIF by PNG

I'd like to replace File:FdGrundordnung.gif by a PNG, that a) has the useless transparent area cropped and b) is smaller. How can I do that with correct licensing terms etc.? The upload wizard has no choice for "it is derived from an existing file on Commons" etc. :-( --RokerHRO (talk) 09:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

The upload wizard is only set up to handle a few common situations, and does not generally work in unusual cases. Simplest method would be to go to Special:UploadWizard, copy most of the contents of the "Information" template of the old file into the "Information" template of the new file (especially including the "PermissionOTRS" thing), and also add a Template:Derived from link to the original file. Replaced jpg with svg

Just created a new spg file (File:Popular vote en2.svg) to replace the old jpg file (File:Popular vote.jpg). Can someone check and let me know should I now rename the new svg or upload to replace the old? Many thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 05:59, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Just tag the JPEG file with {{Vector version available}} (or VVA for short) with the SVG version’s filename as a parameter. You can update the wiki pages where it‘s used by simply changing the filename there, but bear in mind that the decision of which version to use is up to a local consensus, and can’t be made here. The template merely serves to inform the raster image’s would-be users of the choice.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:26, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

I want to redraw and to share the floor plan of the early medieval temple from the 9th century. The original (schema as it was unearthed) is in the book published in 2004. Is is compliant with the copyright policy?--Ditinili (talk) 16:16, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Ditinili:If what you are drawing is strictly a line drawing with high technical merit, perhaps, but no shading, coloration, 3D aspects, etc., then the image you create will (lucky for you) not qualify for copyright protection in the first place (no matter where you got it from and no matter who claims to own the copyright). Technical drawings are considered to be devoid of the artist's personality, and therefore not copyrightable— be sure that when you select your license, you use {{PD-ineligible}} from the list of licenses. Also, though you may indicate that it is your own work, be sure to indicate the title, date, and page of the book from which you got it as your "Source" (this field may be automatically filled in for you if you use the file upload wizard— if so, once the file is successfully uploaded, go back and edit the file information and correct the info in the Source field so that it states the book info). Good luck! KDS4444 (talk) 08:57, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Uploading a picture to my Article

This section was archived on a request by: KDS4444 (talk) 04:38, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello,

I am creating an article for a project that my company produced, a documentary called "It's All About Dancing."

I'm trying to upload the DVD cover of the project to Wikipedia Commons, in order to use it in our article, and am experiencing difficulties.

My file keeps getting deleted, and I keep getting error messages saying that because I don't own the rights to this photo, I can't use it. The problem is that we do, indeed, own the image.

How can I properly upload this image in order to use it within the article?

Thanks in advance, G — Preceding unsigned comment added by FGM416 (talk • contribs) 15:25, 15 September 2015‎ (UTC)

FGM416: In order to prevent your image from being deleted again, you will need to generate an OTRS ticket for it. See Commons:OTRS, and follow the instructions there carefully. You will need to have the owner of the copyright (whoever that is) submit a statement to OTRS identifying him or herself as the copyright owner and releasing the cover under a suitable license. OTRS is pretty backed up, but even if your image gets deleted (again) have no fear: once your ticket DOES get processed, the image can be undeleted and marked as having passed OTRS verification (and so will not be deleted again). Note that if the image has already been published and is fully copyright protected somewhere, none of this may be possible. But if it IS possible, OTRS is where you would begin. Good luck! Also, you have another option: if the image is copyright protected, you may be able to upload it to Wikipedia directly (NOT Commons) and use it under a "fair use" claim (see the Wikipedia article on w:fair use for more explanation of that process). One way or another, it sounds like the image should be usable in your article. But you will have to follow the rules very carefully to get it there. KDS4444 (talk) 08:47, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

I want to upload a picture I took of two fezzes from a fraternal organization called the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans which I would like to add to a Wikipedia article I am working on on that topic. I am unclear if they count as derivative work or not since they do have a design on them which is specific to the organization. The logo design which appears on the fezzes is from around the 1950's. Greenzeiger (talk) 01:16, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Greenzeiger: This gets a little complicated. Do you know when the logo was actually designed? It looks like the Order came together sometime in the first two decades of the 20th century, which could mean that the logo was created prior to 1923. If so, then it is now in the public domain and you may upload images containing it freely! (and it does not matter when the actual fezzez were made or when the logo was placed on them— all that could matter is the date the logo or emblem was first designed). If it was designed after 1923, there are still lots of options, but let's start with that. Was the Order officially created and its logo designed before 1923? KDS4444 (talk) 17:28, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
KDS4444: I am absolutely sure the logo was not designed before 1923 because fezzes from the 1930's and 1940's use a different design with a volcano instead of an owl. Greenzeiger (talk) 19:52, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
KDS4444: Actually, let me take part of that back. While this modern rendition of the logo with the name "AMOS" on it would not have been used pre-1923, it is itself mostly derived from an earlier logo from a predecessor organization called "Oriental Order of Humility and Perfection" (see Fez Museum: Odd Fellows for a bunch of examples). These older versions with a different org name are from way before 1923. Maybe this helps? Greenzeiger (talk) 20:00, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Greenzeiger: That totally helps. The fundamental question then will be, is the modern version of the logo, regardless of the name of the organization with which it is or was once associated, "substantively different" in its parts and pieces from the original one? Does it show real creative novelty stacked on top of old dirt? Generally, it takes a lot to prove that a second, newer work is entiteld to its own copyright as a "derivative work"— (which is not exactly what it sounds like here— read on). If it is genuinely "derivative", this means it has enough new, creative, unique stuff in it to be entitled to its own copyright. If it is merely a variation on a theme, then it is not "derivative", it is simply a new representation of the original work (and is stuck with that work's copyright, which in this case is expired— use the license template {{PD-1923}}). Without being able to see these fezzes for myself, of course, it is hard for me to assess whether or not I personally think they are different enough from the "old skool" logos to be considered derivative. That will be your call, and a second set of eyes may help clarify. But also, there is this: if you believe the logo in its current form, even as a derivative work, was published/ created in the US anytime before 1963, it has almost certainly passed into the public domain as well! The only exceptions are those where the author filed a copyright claim with the US Copyright Office before 1963 (see Commons:Licensing for an explanation of how to search for such claims). In this case, you will want to use the licensing tag {{PD-US-not renewed}}, and you will be good to go. KDS4444 (talk) 02:04, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
KDS4444: Thanks, this is super helpful info! Greenzeiger (talk) 05:46, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

I have no idea how or why Wikimedia Commons would be able to take control of a person's electronic device and erase data from it. Also, Commons does not retain nor distribute information about transferring music from one digital format to another. Try contacting the manufacturer of your device for these issues. Good luck! How to upload infographics on Commons

Hi there, I have created two infographics. Just wondering if I can upload them on wiki commons... From each I have a URL link or EMBED code and NOT an image with .png etc because with a .png or .gif ending it would be a still image and not animated. Can anybody help? Thanks, Abbas Djavadi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abbas.djavadi (talk • contribs) 12:48, 19 September 2015‎ (UTC)

You've already asked this question at Commons:Help desk#How to upload infographics on Wiki Commons. Please refrain from crossposting. I'm marking this one for archival to avoid forking of the discussion. LX (talk, contribs) 15:33, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by WM wm WM (talk • contribs) 19:59, 13 September 2015‎ (UTC)

1) зайти на официальную страничку загрузки картинок именно для этого конкурса;
2) выбрать страну (просто кликнуть мышкой);
21:04, 13 September 2015‎ (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by WM wm WM (talk • contribs) 21:25, 13 September 2015‎ (UTC)

Cannot upload 587 MB ogv video file

Hi, I tried to upload an ogv file by means of the Wizard and chunked upload with Chrome and Firefox 40.0.3. It did not work, since it freezes at the assembling stage. I fed back on these in the link provided. So now I am trying another way. According to this, I can search assistance, I even tried at Phabricator, but I may need some further insight into the wikiworld, or I am too impatient altogether, I just went astray somewhere. Could someone guide me on any solution as straightforward as possible? Where could I find help of an "upload technician". Any hints appreciated --Iñaki LLM (talk) 21:30, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Tagging images uploaded on behalf of a confidential third party

I understand from the conversation at Commons talk:Essential information#Source that when uploading an image for a third party who either has no user account and does not wish to make one or wishes to remain confidential that we should use the {{Own}} template for the |source= field, but my concern is that when I select a license, the resulting template states: "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following terms..." when in fact I am NOT the copyright holder at all and am not interested in having credit AS the copyright holder! I searched through the various other templates that I might be able to use, but could come up with nothing that seemed to meet the need. What I wanted was to find a template that stated something like: "The copyright holder of this image, who wishes to remain confidential but whose identity [has been verified via the OTRS ticketing system under ticket number XXXXXXXXXXXXX]/[is in the process of being verified via the OTRS ticketing system], hereby publishes it under the following terms..." (er, also, one of which cannot include "attribution", since there is no name to which to attribute it, but this is secondary). Having the {{Self}} tag automatically make me sound like the copyright holder is not what I wanted, but didn't see any alternatives (for the actual image in question see File:Elena-levon-1.jpg). Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a policy around situations like this that I can follow? Thanks! KDS4444 (talk) 05:51, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

I understand and agree with your concerns, and I wouldn't use {{own}} that way myself or advise others to use it in that way. It should only be used for works that you created yourself. Any other use risks increasing the already high rate of reusers mistakenly thinking that the person listed as the uploader is always the one who should be attributed. (I've seen a lot of newspapers claim that photos taken from Commons were created by Flickr upload bot.) For the same reason, {{self}} definitely should not be used for cases like this. The appropriate source tag here is {{private correspondence}}, and the license tag can just stand on its own, without a wrapper template. I've edited the file description and I'll revert the changes to the documentation for {{own}}. LX (talk, contribs) 09:33, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
I cannot than you enough for pointing this out for me. I have now made an edit request on the {{Information}} template to have this included there so that it will be easier for others to find it in the future. Thank you, thank you, thank you! While I've got your attention, @LX: , do you know how I should also complete the licensing information so that it does not utilize the {{Self}} template? Because that is also misleading (and yet I could find no other good options for it). KDS4444 (talk) 23:16, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
No worries, KDS4444! :) Personally, I would avoid the Upload Wizard and use the basic upload form, because it gives full control over what the file description will look like, but it should be possible to get the same result by selecting "This file is not my own work" in the Upload Wizard. LX (talk, contribs) 07:32, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
So, LX, does that phrase, "it should be possible to get the same result by selecting 'This file is not my own work' in the Upload Wizard" mean, "You should be able to find it because it's there if you just look in the right place" or does it mean, "It isn't there but it seems like it should be and maybe somethin' autter be done about it"? I 'spect it's the latter, but please clarify. Cheers! KDS4444 (talk) 02:51, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
KDS4444: It means the option is there, but I'm not 100% sure it produces the desired result, because I never use the Wizard myself. :) LX (talk, contribs) 09:40, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Commons:Guidance for paid editors contains information on uploading logotypes to Commons, and en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial contains information on how to insert images into articles. Logotypes are typically best represented as vector images. If that is not available, the highest resolution available is preferred. LX (talk, contribs) 10:45, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Tonybdistil -- You should be aware to upload it to Commons, it would have to be released under a permissive copyright license. It could be uploaded to Wikipedia under "fair use" without such a release... AnonMoos (talk) 19:18, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Photo Deletion

I am a user by name Ysmboss. I spend much of my time on wikipedia for creating pages for artiste in my country Ghana. I have been uploading artiste pictures which they grant me permission to use and it's always deleted by Wikipedia commons. I will appreciate if you could help me on how to upload files and its copyright. Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ysmboss (talk • contribs) 14:22, 23 September 2015‎ (UTC)

There are a couple of issues. Firstly, the only person who can grant a valid copyright permission is the copyright holder. That's usually the photographer – not the depicted person. Secondly, permission for you to use the content on Wikipedia is nowhere near sufficient for it to be hosted on Commons. It's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be freely used by anyone for any purpose. So what is needed is a permission from the copyright holder to publish the content under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes. For information on how to obtain and submit an appropriate release statement, see Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 16:02, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Unable to upload svg

I mixed 3 SVG files from commons and it is over here at https://openclipart.org/detail/228048/wikinews-middle-east. But while uploading it to commons with .svg extension, it says that file is corrupt. How can I upload svg version?
acagastya  ✉ Dicere Aliquid :) 16:13, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Having external files referenced in SVG files is not supported on Commons. Also, two of the external files you've linked in your SVG are bitmaps, and this is not a sensible use of having bitmap data in an SVG. LX (talk, contribs) 16:46, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
@LX: Okay, so is there an alternative method to do it? Do I need inkscape? Or anything else. Please guide me.
acagastya  ✉ Dicere Aliquid :) 20:17, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
The SVG needs to be self-contained, i.e. all the vectors need to be described directly in the file, which you can do with any software with reasonable SVG support, including Inkscape. LX (talk, contribs) 16:38, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
@LX: I tried to get the SVG code, and was feeling so lost yesterday. Today, I just saved SVG file of Middle East and Wikinews and overlapped one on to other. Almost done! Thanks for the help!

I would like this image to be uploaded to the King Power Stadium wiki page under the section of 'Stadium Seating Plan.' The image was made by myself. It was made on Sept 25th 2015 in England. Here is the link to my image which I would like to be uploaded if possible:

Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexMlcfc (talk • contribs) 10:55, 25 September 2015‎ (UTC)

I wonder if you really did create that image yourself. The moiré pattern suggests it is a depiction of a pre-existing image. In this particular case, it may not matter that much, because there may not be anything copyrightable in the original image anyway, but as a general rule, please understand that you cannot take photos of other people's works and say that you created them yourself.
I'd also like to point out that graphics like this should really be represented in a vector format such as SVG, rather than a raster format, and that JPEG is a particularly unsuitable format for images with large uniformly coloured areas. There are plenty of good SVG files in Category:Association football field diagrams to use as a starting point.
As for help with uploading, for anyone to be able to provide that, you will need to describe what problem you are having. LX (talk, contribs) 18:06, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
