Hello, I have uploaden a picture to Commons. The same day I have send a written permission regarding copyrights. I didn't hear anything from Wikipedia Permissions, and now my file has been deleted. I have sent another email and again there was no answer. I know that there are volunteers working there but how can I comunicate with them, if nobody is answering? And what I should do to keep my files published?(Jkcmmilena (talk) 13:29, 31 May 2015 (UTC))

OTRS has a rather long backlog, so it will likely be several weeks before your submission receives attention. Once it’s been verified the file will be undeleted; you shouldn’t have to do anything further. The best place to follow up, if there’s been no response for some time, is at the OTRS Noticeboard.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:31, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

(falsch hochgeladen) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Enkat (talk • contribs) 18:50, 31 May 2015‎ (UTC)

Hallo Enkat, klar geht das.

Move and overwrite

I've moved a file (File:European Conservatives and Reformists MEPs map pre-2014.svg) with the intention of uploading a new file to its original name (File:European Conservatives and Reformists MEPs map.svg). However, because of the redirect, it now appears that the name is already in use, so the file name can't be used. How does one get around this? Bastin (talk) 19:57, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Upload your new file to File:European Conservatives and Reformists MEPs map pre-2015.svg and edit the redirect so it points there. -- Rillke(q?) 20:42, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Don't forget to have a look at COM:OVERWRITE, if you hadn't already. -- Rillke(q?) 20:46, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR)[1] is a conservative,[4] anti-federalist,[3][4][5] and Eurosceptic[4][6][7][8][9] political group in the European Parliament. -- what are they then doing in the European Parliament? Disruptive debating? -- Rillke(q?) 20:46, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Bastin, I've deleted the redirect so you can upload a new file. Green Giant (talk) 21:05, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
@Green Giant: Why? -- Rillke(q?) 06:28, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
If the file had been overwritten, more than likely it would have needed separating. Since it has already been moved, it is simpler to delete the redirect and let Bastin upload a new file, rather than repoint the redirect. Green Giant (talk) 08:47, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
Ah, okay. So next year, a new file move and a new admin action is required. -- Rillke(q?) 08:59, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
Not next year :P but maybe in 2019 when the next European Parliament election will probably take place. There is no harm in having a completely new file every five years to match the results of the elections. Green Giant (talk) 09:46, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
I just don't understand why folk isn't using file redirects more frequently. You just link the redirect from articles, and update this redirect when necessary. Clean solution without elevated privileges required. -- Rillke(q?) 19:10, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
I agree; files showing information that needs periodic updating should be named so as to disambiguate by date, rather than ‘squatting’ on a generic name that could be a redirect instead.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:18, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

SVG files

I've uploaded an SVG file (File:Gauge_EO.svg). In my own SVG viewer it looked perfect. But in Wikimedia Commons, the special character is replaced by something completely wrong. What did I do wrong? Can anybody help me? --Sternchen96 (talk) 10:43, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

I've tried to change the ISO code information into "iso-8859-3". But Wikimedia Commons doesn't accept it. --Sternchen96 (talk) 11:35, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
Try using a font from the officially supported list or, less preferred due to loss of editability (and because Arial is execrable), convert the text to paths.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:06, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
"...convert the text to paths." Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this. --Sternchen96 (talk) 20:20, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
You use CorelDraw, yes? You should get a “Convert to Curves“ menu item when you right-click the text. (The line of type has to be “Artistic Text” rather than “Paragraph Text”, which needs converting to the former to make the function available.) Some of the Export functions also include this as an option (I’m not sure about SVG), which has the advantage that your native file remains fully editable (although of course you can also save the file before converting, then close without saving after exporting). Note that the rendering of the text at low resolutions will usually be less smooth and uniform after conversion to paths, but the difference in quality becomes insignificant at high resolutions.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:11, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
No. My version of CorelDraw can't create SVG files. I took an existing SVG file with German text and used an online SVG-editor to change the text and to view the result. --Sternchen96 (talk) 16:22, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

--Paulae (talk) 16:52, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Please check your connection! -- Rillke(q?) 15:40, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Problem besteht weiterhin.
--Paulae (talk) 19:09, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

I don't quite understand what you're asking. The site you are on right now is Wikimedia Commons, so it's not very surprising that photos you upload to this site end up on Commons. All the files you have uploaded so far are already placed in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Food 2015, which is a category here on Commons. None of your uploads, however, have proper content categories. Please see Commons:Categories for instructions on how to add categories to provide context and make it possible for others to find the files. LX (talk, contribs) 16:42, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I have uploaded photo, file is called Lahiri Baba.jpg. It is photo that is about 130 years old and no one in particular has any copyright on it.Obviously,Sri Gangadhar De,person who took the photo is dead for a long time.Photo is freely circulated among devotees of Lahiri Baba. However,i saw notice saying that "This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status",etc.. How to solve this? Thanks! Cuyp (talk) 10:57, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Cuyp! I'm guessing the file you're talking about is actually the one called File:LAHIRI-BABA.jpg. It looks like you forgot to add an appropriate copyright tag when uploading. The appropriate tag (or combination thereof) may depend on the following:
  • when and where the photo was created
  • when and where the photo was first published
  • when the person who created the photo died
You've stated that the photograph was created in 1880, but not where. There is no information date or location of first publication. Photos that have remained unpublished for a long time can be protected by copyright for a surprisingly long time. You've stated that the person who took the photo died a long time ago, but not how long ago. It is certainly possible for a person taking a photo in 1880 to have died less than 70 years ago, which is the standard copyright term in many countries.
You also haven't provided any verifiable source information, which is required to confirm the answers to the questions listed above. LX (talk, contribs) 16:18, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Have you tried entering them in decimal format i.e. 55.681356 N 12.575694 E? Green Giant (talk) 18:26, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Some forms don’t recognize directions either, requiring that one prefix a hyphen to South latitudes and West longitudes instead; the above example would be just the figures. Another option is to leave out the coördinates on uploading (if the wizard will let you) and edit the file afterwards, adding e.g. {{Location|55|40|52.88|N|12|34|32.5|E}} to the Summary section.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:29, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Permission for PC game box cover art?

I want to upload cover art for PC games, much like seen here. Most are a decade or older, but some are newer. Box art (including back of boxes) and sometimes insert materials.

The upload guidelines say that e.g. CD and DVD covers are forbidden. I suppose this is similar.

If you say permission is required, you are telling me to not upload any box art. I barely have time to upload anything, and that's without permission. You can completely entirely forget about me getting permission from ... who even knows where to start or how many years it would take, for every single pic.

If permission is indeed required, then for practical purposes you don't want non-original pictures on Wikipedia. But surely you'd like more pictures on Wikipedia? I know I would.

Anyway: Is it ok to upload PC game box art scans, without permission?

Thanks - RK7 — Preceding unsigned comment added by RedKnight7 (talk • contribs) 17:11, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes and no. No, you cannot upload such images to this website (Wikimedia Commons). Yes, you could upload such images to some of the other Wikimedia projects e.g. English Wikipedia, provided each image can meet all non-free content criteria required by such projects. You don't need to ask for permission for fair use. Just in case you weren't aware, Commons has more than 26 million free items, a significant number of which have been licensed by the author(s) after being approached by Wikimedians. Green Giant (talk) 18:19, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Can you please give me some guidance with the copyright tag I need to include for the images I wish to upload. They are images commissioned by the Organisation I work for, and we are able to use them where we wish, but I want to attribute the original photographer. I have been through the tags and can't seem to find one that fits appropriately. What copyright tag do I use? It is an Australian photographer and organisation.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Kookyrabbit (talk • contribs) 01:41, 17 June 2015‎ (UTC)

Giving a client broad permission to use the work done for them does not amount to granting everyone licence to use it for any purpose. In most jurisdictions, unless the terms of a commission include transfer of all intellectual property in the work to the client, a photographer is still presumed to own the copyright. For Australian photos I gather the exceptions include contracts made before mid-1998 and those for “private or domestic” purposes, where it goes to the client. At any rate, and particularly if the images have been published elsewhere, it would be best for the owner of the rights to send a letter of consent to our permissions registry under a standard licence: please see Commons:OTRS for instructions and a sample form. See also Commons:Guidance for paid editors for some general advice.
P.S. I just noticed you also posted at the Village Pump. Please don‘t ask the same question in more than one place unless it has gone unanswered for some time. And remember to sign your Talk and noticeboard postings by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end. Thanks; I hope you don’t find the red tape too frustrating, but it’s there to protect both the creators and reusers of our content.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:10, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Josevaldo Filho (talk • contribs) 17:43, 7 June 2015‎ (UTC)

Hi Josevaldo Filho! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Portuguese is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Esplanada. I have asked the folks there to help out here, but it seems they're too busy fighting amongst themselves. :(
If I understand correctly, your question is about File:Brasão de Tabuleiro do Norte.jpg and File:Bandeira de Tabuleiro do Norte.jpg, which were uploaded by you and deleted on the same day you asked the question above. You then recreated both of them two days later.
I can't see the file descriptions for the deleted versions, but the last time you uploaded File:Brasão de Tabuleiro do Norte.jpg, you originally stated that it came from http://www.tabuleirodonorte.ce.gov.br/site2/simbolos. You did not provide a reason as to why the image would be in the public domain or any evidence of free licensing. You then added a claim that the copyright holder of the image allows anyone to use it for any purpose. That claim seems to be completely made up, and it's contradicted by the "todos os direitos reservados" notice at the bottom of the source site. You then changed stories completely, claiming that you are the author and copyright holder of the image, which isn't true. (The other file has a similar history.)
Finding a file on the Internet does not mean you created it, and it does not make you the copyright holder. You've made false claims like that on several occasions, most recently with File:Vista panorâmica de Tabuleiro do Norte.jpg, which you grabbed from http://www.panoramio.com/photo/12130970, and that's the reason you are currently blocked. Also note that you should not recreate previously deleted content yourself. Recreating previously deleted content outside of process may also result in your account being blocked.
It is possible that the files are covered by {{PD-BrazilGov}}, but that would need to be demonstrated with accurate and truthful information on the file description pages. Most importantly, it would need to be shown that the design was published or commissioned prior to 1983. LX (talk, contribs) 17:14, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Re-uploading deleted files

Hello. I attempted to re-upload files that were deleted for copyright violation, and provide the correct copyright information so that the files can still be used. However, the Upload Wizard won't let me upload previously deleted files for some strange reason. What should I do? Wiki you now, Wiki you later! (talk) 14:26, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

The "strange" reason is that deleted content is presumably deleted for a reason, and recreating it is grounds for blocking. If you think the deletion was incorrect, you should appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests instead. LX (talk, contribs) 14:46, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
I don't think that the deletion was incorrect. The files did violate copyright (Iverified this after seing the deletion log). However, what I was trying to do was re-upload the files and fix the violations by providing the correct copyright information. Is this possible or not? Wiki you now, Wiki you later! (talk) 16:20, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
What are the file name(s)? You've only made two edits on Commons, both of them in this section. It would be helpful to know which files you're trying to upload. Green Giant (talk) 18:52, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
There is a while long list of them, and I don't remember what I named al l of them. Oh, and I have made more than two edits on Commons, just they were before I created my account.Wiki you now, Wiki you later! (talk) 21:10, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
You cannot upload anything without having an account, so what was your old user name? That would allow identification of the files via your upload log.
Commons:Undeletion requests is still the correct venue. You'll need to mention the names of the files and the reason why you believe the files are now in the public domain or published under a free license and provide supporting evidence. LX (talk, contribs) 21:14, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

can I use a photo in a Wikipedia article without uploading it or giving away lots of rights?

can I use a photo in a Wikipedia article without uploading it or giving away lots of rights? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soilmicro (talk • contribs) 21:46, 19 June 2015‎ (UTC)

@Soilmicro: Short answer: No. Long answer: All images used in Wikipedia must be free for anyone to use for any purpose (under certain circumstances defined by the Free License the uploader has put on is/her work). That's "free" as in "freedom", not as in "free beer". See COM:Licensing for information on our requirements concerning that and Free software for the general idea behind it. --El Grafo (talk) 21:57, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) First of all, this is Commons, not Wikipedia, and you can’t upload anything here without “giving away lots of rights”. Second, AFAIK it’s not possible to display external images on any Wikimedia project. Non-free content can be uploaded to projects that allow it; the English Wikipedia is one, but there are various requirements to meet and a fair-use rationale must be provided. (Please sign your Talk and noticeboard postings by typing four tildes “~~~~” at the end.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:09, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. I added the photo to the Commons because it was the only way I could figure out to add it to the Wikipedia article I submitted. It is our own picture, and we are fine with others using it in a way respectful to the subject, but not sure about others editing it in a disrepectful way. I tried adding such a clause while uploading it, and someone asked for the photo to be deleted. Is that standard? I just want to know if and how I can add the picture to the Wikipedia page with some clause in the rights about it being used in a manner respectful to the person in the photo. Can it be added to the Commons that way? If not, how can I add it to an English Wikipedia page without granting the right to mix and transform? thanks!Soilmicro (talk) 23:39, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Prohibiting all remixing & transformation (as in the -ND- condition on some CC licences) disqualifies an image from being hosted here. Note that CC licences that we do accept prohibit misrepresentation of the original authors in derivative works, providing a degree of protection from abuse. We also have a notice to discourage disrespect of people’s images: adding a personaity-rights template to the file page might alleviate your concerns. The way I look at it, people with malicious intent are unlikely to abide by any posted conditions from the start, so the only sure defence against them is not to publish at all.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:17, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Error with djvu file uploads

As per this complaint I was surprised noone had mentioned it before as it was happening all the time to me until I figured a year was insufficient for the date. The pick a date box doesn't work-I can't get to the year I need. So I was picking any date and typing over the year. But now even that isn't working. The file I am trying to upload is over 50M, is that causing problems?

Also assuming newbies and non-digital natives know how to use this help page is naive. There should be a box to type in that inserts the message at the bottom of the page.

I shall go back to the old form and try there. --Zoeannl (talk) 04:34, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

The most basic info

I've made many (usually small) edits to Wikipedia. There's an image (a diagram of vectors)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Axial_pump_velocity_triangle.jpg
I'd like to make minor edits to, but I don't know how to start, since neither the edit page of the article nor the edit page of the image in Commons has an editable form of the image.

I've downloaded the image (.jpg), but it's not editable either. Is it the case that I'm trying to do something impossible, that is, that, when such an image is uploaded, only the final product, not the "source code," is uploaded? And if that is the case, why somewhere early on in some very, very basic intro to Commons isn't there some very, very basic discussion of such extremely novice matters? Most of the discussion is legal and semilegal, what you can and cannot do, but little is directed at the completely dumb novice about how to do the most basic things, including whether it's even possible to make minor edits to images and, if so, how to get started doing so.

I've searched long and hard through both Wikipedia and Commons Help and FAQs. Maybe the info I'm looking for is already there. If it is, either it's obscure, or I'm just stupid, for which, if true, I apologize. Thanks. --Wikifan2744 (talk) 19:41, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Wikifan2744! The root cause of the problem is that Hkhandelwal unfortunately chose a rather inappropriate file format for this type of illustration. JPEG is a destructively compressed raster image format that is mainly suitable for photographs. Diagrams should be represented using SVG, which (among other advantages) allows editing of the vectors and text – pretty much as you'd like to do, I guess. The sad thing is that the file was probably created by a tool that allowed editing of the vectors and text, but that information would have been thrown away when the file was converted to a grid of pixels. Pretty much the only way to do anything useful with the file now is to recreate it from scratch. I've tagged it with {{Convert to SVG}}, but we have 76,462 other files tagged like that, so it may be a while before someone gets around to it. LX (talk, contribs) 20:06, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

How to give license of my choice to file, I'd created?

Hello, I created map that I'd like to use in Wikipedia article, and upload to Wikimedia. I'd like this file to be licensed under WTFPL Public License, as any of this files. How to do so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kubahaha (talk • contribs) 18:01, 24 June 2015‎ (UTC)

If it's your image, you can slap any license on it that we accept. The simplest way (but requiring a little wiki-markup knowledge) is to use the basic upload form and add in "{{WTFPL}}"... AnonMoos (talk) 07:31, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Floresina! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Café. If I understand your question correctly, you tried to upload some files, but you were unsuccessful. As far as I can tell, you haven't provided any information on what happened. Did you get an error message (and if so: what was it?), did you have difficulties answering the questions asked, or were you just not able to proceed at some point? Without that kind of information, it will be very difficult for anyone to help. There is no account named User:Florecina, so I assume that was a typo. You don't have any live or deleted uploads in your log. The abuse filter log shows five entries for your account matching a filter rule concerning "massive uploads by brand new users". That probably wasn't enough to prevent you from uploading; the uploads would only have been tagged, but the entries give a clue as to what might be wrong. Your uploads all had names beginning with "IMG 8660". That might match one of the rules on our blacklist used to prevent meaningless and generic filenames. Try using more descriptive filenames in the future. LX (talk, contribs) 17:32, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Losy historii! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Polish is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Bar. It's a little hard to understand the automatic translation of your message, but I guess you are asking for some deleted files to be restored – possibly File:Odsłonięcie tablicy pamiątkowej i otwarcie ronda im. Hi Vivek.bekhabar! Before you uploaded the logo, you acknowledged that you had read the tutorial on what you can and cannot upload to Commons. That tutorial tells you that you cannot upload copyrighted content to Commons unless the copyright holder has approved publication under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purposes, including commercial purposes. If you didn't have a reason to believe that the logo is covered by such a license (and it seems you don't, since you're asking us about it), you shouldn't have uploaded it. Wiki Learning uploaded a new tutorial for Commons in Spanish at File:Como_subir_multimedia_a_Wikimedia_Commons.webm We erred and put a version without the audio but then uploaded the version with the sound. However, if we click on the main screen we get the version without sound, having to go down the page and click specifically on the new version to get sound. I guess it is because the video uses the Opus audio codec. I hate to say that but you'll probably need to convert the audio track to vorbis using avconv or ffmpeg. If you need help getting this done, please let me know. -- Rillke(q?) 21:35, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
