Replacement

Can someone delete Atmosphere layers.svg so that I can upload one that has multiple languages? Not the -en version. Or is there another way to do this? Delphi234 (talk) 21:08, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure that's necessary. I assume you can manually edit the page to replace the redirect with information about a file, and then upload a file with that name. AnonMoos (talk) 01:21, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. That worked. Delphi234 (talk) 02:58, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I am new to this so sorry about my questions. I have read most of the material about picture uploading but I am still not sure how to handle the copyright situation for this example.

I am going to add a picture on the Brian Hutchison page. It is a head shot he had taken for his own publicity use. He has never had a copyright on the picture. I received the photo in jpg form from him with his permission to use it on Wikipedia.

Can you please tell me how to proceed?

Thank you in advance..

You need permission from the person who does hold the copyright, which is usually the photographer rather than the subject. Permission to use the photo on Wikipedia is not sufficient. It needs to be a permission to publish the photo under a license which allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Once you have identified who the copyright holder is, follow this procedure to obtain and send in an appropriate permission statement. LX (talk, contribs) 06:03, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Need help?

I have been given permission by the author to use his photo on wikipedia, but which "creative License" do I click? Please help?--Empire of War (talk) 06:48, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Permission to use the photo on Wikipedia is not sufficient. It needs to be a permission to publish the photo under a license which allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Only the copyright holder can issue a valid license. If the copyright holder didn't mention a specific license, you can't just select one on their behalf. Please follow this procedure to obtain and send in an appropriate permission statement before uploading. LX (talk, contribs) 07:52, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

License

If wikicommons only accept the license 3.0...., then why are many images uploaded here under Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0), mostly the ones from flickr? (Monkelese (talk) 22:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

By "license 3.0" I suppose you mean one of either Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 ({{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}) or Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 ({{Cc-by-3.0}})? See Commons:Copyright_tags#Free_Creative_Commons_licenses for allowed Creative Commons licenses. It is not recommended to use older licenses for new images, but it is allowed. For images from flickr, we use the license used at flickr. Only the author would be allowed to change the license. In general, any license is allowed that allows anyone to use the files for any purpose. --rimshottalk 06:36, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia, Wiki commons and Google

THIS IS MEANT TO CONTACT SOMEONE , AND NOT TO BE UPLOADED FOR THE WORLD TO SEE ?

Hello, Several days ago I, Corey Batson, attempted for the very first time to upload a file here for my good friend, and professional falconry pioneer, living legend Jeff Diaz, in fact on your wikipedia definition of falconry, the 2nd picture is one of Jeff flying " TJ " his lead Sakeret ( tiercel or male Saker falcon, Falco cheruug ) which was uploaded almost a decade ago without even asking his permission from photgrapher, JC Dill after she regularly would watch Jeffrey training and conditioning his service falcons up on Stanford University property in 2004 ? And of course this didn't bother Jeffrey in anyway, what has happened apparently tonight the first time he's been on a computer for seevral days, is that Googke sent him a notice or warning that he " had broken Google regulations or agreements " in soem way shape or form, and I know for a fact it was probably my doing, Corey Batson when 3 days ago I atmepted with Jeffrey to upload a file about his amazing life as an environmentalist and avid wildlife , ecologist, active protector of the earth's environment, and ironically Jeffrey having grown up some of his childhood years indeed in Mtn. View, california itself where he attended Castro and landels elementary Schools ( as well as Jeffrey's immigrant grandfather, Joseph Diaz, being an active Mountain View City Councilman ( merchant, business owner, volunteer fireman and part timne Mtn. View Police Detective in 1930's ) in the 1950's, upon his sudden unwxpecting early death from a supposedly ' routine surgery , of the 5,000 who atyended. Jeffrey 's grandfather funeral procession in April 1953, which closed off downtone Mtn. View from8am through noon, for the 5,000 people who attended, California Governor Earl Warren was unofficially there, as Joseph Diaz had just asisted Warren in the FreeMasons obtaining their new Freemasons Lodge location next to the library literally week sor months before . So Jeffrey takes anything and everything in Mountain View, California including from Google VERY, VERY SERIOUSLY ?? CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT I DID WRONG OR WHAT JEFFREY DID WRONG TO PUT HIM IN THIS " NEGATIVE " STATUS " IM 100% CERTAIN HE HAD NO POSSIBLE WAY OF KNOWINGLY CAUSING THIS, AS JEFFREY IS BARELY COMPUTER LITERATE ?? PLEASE HELP US FIND OUT WHAT WE DID WRONG and help us make things right ?

By the way , next time he returns to MTn. View, CA and SDF Bay Area he would gladly like to offer his services as a volunteer for any Google or Mtn. View City Function to perform an Environmental Raaptor Orientation Presentation for any group of management level individuals for a 40 minute " bird show " 100% for free as a volunteer, to express his gratitude, also he only recently learned of this lost bit of famly history a few weeks ago, as far as the Governor attending his grand fathers' funeral , so on and so forth, nor did he realize what a role his grandfather played in the local Spaniard Community, being President of the Cervantes Club and was being pressured to run for mayor of Mtn. View at the next coming term ? Apparently his grandfather had conducted business in downtown Mtn. View for over 35 years at THAT POINT IN 1953 ! WHICH MEANS SINCE AROUND WWI ??

So please assist Jeffrey and myself Corey in corrdcting whatever wrongs we must of done to get this " demerited staus " as I'll be honest I'm not very computer savy myself " having never listed anything on Wikipedia ?

Thanks, Cory and Jeffrey — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sakeret (talk • contribs) 05:23, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

OK, so to boil down those 620 words to something more to the point: You helped a friend upload a file to Wikimedia Commons, he received some kind of angry notice, supposedly from Google, and now you think this has something to do with that file.
We're going to need some more specific information. What is the name of the file in question? You haven't uploaded anything using the account you used to post your question. Did you use a different account when uploading? If so: which? What was the specific content of the message from Google? What makes you think Google would care about what you did on Commons?
Regarding File:Falconry-CRW 2879 copy.jpg, that appears to have been uploaded by JC Dill personally. Since you say that the photo was uploaded without asking her, are you saying that Jcdill at English Wikipedia was impersonating the real photographer? LX (talk, contribs) 08:23, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

How to upload and attach a photo to a CURRENT BIOGRAPHY???

There is a current biography under HYPNOSIS about Harry Arons....how can I attaché HIS PHOTO to HIS BIOGRAPHY??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cehotmail (talk • contribs) 13:16, 7 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Please sign your entries and please don't SHOUT. Uploading photos for biographies is no different than uploading any other illustration really. You need to find a photo that is in the en:public domain or published under a free license, or convince the copyright holder of an existing photo to agree to publish it under a free license, or create an original photo yourself and release it under a free license. QUESTION:
I have permission to use the photo, but how do I upload it to his biography?? Cehotmail — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cehotmail (talk • contribs) 19:31, 7 August 2014‎ (UTC)
Again, please stop SHOUTING and start signing your entries with four tilde (~) characters. Permission for you to use the photo is not sufficient for the photo to be hosted on Commons. It needs to be a permission from the copyright holder (usually the photographer) to publish the photo under a license which allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Please follow this procedure to obtain and send in an appropriate permission statement before uploading. LX (talk, contribs) 07:53, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Cehotmail -- anyway, you don't upload images to a biography; you upload them to Commons or Wikipedia (whichever is most appropriate in the circumstances), and then add them to a Wikipedia biography article. AnonMoos (talk) 11:27, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

I can upload only 3 pictures at same time

I can upload only 3 pictures at same time, if I add more than 3 pictures and give information to all pictures, only the first 3 pictures saved and other are waiting and waiting, I must break upload and start next 3 pictures.--Motopark (talk) 19:08, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Which browser, version of that browser, operating system and version of that operating system are you using? Apart from that, there is a patch waiting in Gerrit that should simplify the upload logic internally; don't know whether it will resolve this issue, though. -- Rillke(q?) 19:40, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

I have the same problem, although the three that succeed still show the message (translated) "Currently saving the data and publish ...". I use Mac OSX 10.8.5 Firefox 31.0. Wouter (talk) 07:04, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
The files I uploaded have a size of about 10 MB each. When I tried 8 very small files there was no problem. So apparently the size has an influence on the performance of the upload. Wouter (talk) 07:29, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for analytically analysing that issue. So it appears that the chunk threshold must be exceeded to reproduce this bug. Can you try to disable chunked uploading in your preferences? Note that after you did so, you won't be able to upload files over 100 MB using UploadWizard. -- Rillke(q?) 10:08, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
The chunked uploading was not enabled. Uploading of only one file of a size of about 15 MB succeeded, but the wizard still showed "Currently saving the data and publish ...". I tried now with enabling the chunked uploading and set the maximum number of simultaneous uploads on 3. I uploaded 3 files with sizes of 16, 12 and 11 MB. The upload succeeded as I could see in the category where they should come. The upload wizard showed however "Currently saving the data and publish ...". So I don't see an advantage of the chunked uploading in this case. Wouter (talk) 20:48, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Screenshot of text on Wikipedia

The current Wikipedia article on the Younger Futhark uses runic fonts to display a detailed breakdown of the younger and elder futharks. In other places it uses images to display the futharks. Displaying these fonts seems to be problematic on a wide variety of browsers. I would like to upload a screenshot of the table displayng the fonts successfully as an image. This would greatly simplify the reading and reach of the article as there would be no fonts to install. Would uploading this screen shot be ok? PryderiUK (talk) 20:19, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

You can't delete files yourself unless you're an administrator, but you can request deletion. If the file meets one of the criteria for speedy deletion, edit the file description and add {{speedy|Original author or uploader requests deletion of recently created (<7 days) unused content.}}, {{copyvio|Explanation of why it is a copyright violation}} or whatever applies. Otherwise, click on "Nominate for deletion" in the toolbox on the left and describe, with reference to Commons:Deletion policy, why you think that the file should be deleted. I have created some football kits but not sure if I can upload the full kit as a picture or whether i have to upload each individual part. If someone could help this confused individual I would really appreciate it! James J92uk (talk) 18:35, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

It depends on what the conventions are which cover the articles where you want to add the images. Most images I see uploaded are of individual parts, but it theoretically could vary between different language Wikipedias etc. AnonMoos (talk) 19:54, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

I participated in a WIkibomb last week for women in science and created a page for the scientist Professor Jean Palutikof. She has emailed me a picture to add to the page however I don't know how to upload it as it is not my work and I don't know what license it might have.

Thankyou

HFairlamb (talk) 03:33, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

You need to find out who the copyright holder is (usually the photographer rather than the subject of the photo) and ask them if they're willing to release the photo under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If they agree to do that, follow the procedure described at Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 10:48, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Why can't I upload an ad that is a docx. file?

Thanks, Kim — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coconino1 (talk • contribs) 22:24, 18 August 2014‎ (UTC)

Because ads are typically not useful for educational purposes and because .docx is a non-standard, proprietary legacy file format typically used for documents consisting primarily of text. Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free, educational media files such as images, video and audio using free file formats. See Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:File types. The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time (and Linux users don't seem to be more affected than others), but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels and unhelpful error messages, and nobody responsible for its introduction seems to want to take responsibility for responding to feedback or making sure it works properly. Uploading html-file for interactive learning

How upload pictures

Hi, I'd like to upload photos, which licence I have to choose ? If I need the authorization of the author, I have to upload the photos on commons, in order to give the adresse of the file I uploaded ? no? If yes which licence I have to choose ??

So it is impossible for to upload the photos, what's wrong ? I don't understand... Thank you Kind regards --Manutention001 (talk) 19:16, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Manutention001, here's one way to do this:
  1. Ask the author under which license he or she would like to release the image (If they don't know, suggest CC-BY-SA 3.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0)
  2. Upload the file using that license
  3. Optional, but strongly recommended: Add {{OTRS-pending}} to the file description page (field permission= of the Information section)
  4. Give the address of the file to the author and ask him/her to send the permission to OTRS
  5. As soon as the OTRS Team has received the permission, they will remove {{OTRS-pending}} and replace it with another template for the permission.
Does that help you?

Gruß Günter — Preceding unsigned comment added by WMguegafue (talk • contribs) 17:49, 25 August 2014‎ (UTC)

I have moved your file into Cultural heritage monuments in Heroldsberg and used the {{Other}} template to show a thumbnail of the earlier photo. (I also added {{Kulturdenkmal}} to the description.) Note that a link to your file’s page now appears in the “File usage“ section of the other page. Does that work for you?

Gruß Günter — Preceding unsigned comment added by WMguegafue (talk • contribs) 10:10, 26 August 2014‎ (UTC)

@WMguegafue: Hallo Günther,
[[Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Heroldsberg]]
[[Category:Buildings in Heroldsberg]]
[[Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Heroldsberg]]
[[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, DE-BY]]
[[Category: Photographs by Ailura]]
Füge unsere neu kreierte Category:Kirchenweg 9 (Heroldsberg) ganz unten an, so dass es jetzt heißt:
[[Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Heroldsberg]]
[[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, DE-BY]]
[[Category: Photographs by Ailura]]
[[Category:Kirchenweg 9 (Heroldsberg)]]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by El Grafo (talk • contribs) 13:01, 26 August 2014‎ (UTC)

SVG error, how to debug?

I'm trying to upload a modified version of File:Yunnan.svg but I get the message that says "This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. See the FAQ for more information." But the FAQ talks only of JPGs, not SVGs. Without knowing what script or HTML I'm looking for, I don't know how to find it amidst all of the XML code in the SVG file. Ideas? Powers (talk) 00:59, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Our preview/debug area is Commons:SVG Check, which may or may not work in this particular case. It's probably Javascript code which is at least partly contained in a <script element. You could try searching for ecmascript, doc.getElement, onactivate, pointer-events etc. also. Wikimedia Commons allows SMIL animation in SVG files, but not Javascript... AnonMoos (talk) 19:04, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I eventually discovered that using the Inkscape option to set the page boundaries to match a selected object was causing the file to read as "not an SVG file" to the SVG check tool. Strangest thing. There may be a bug in the Inkscape version I'm using (0.48.4 r), or some other fundamental incompatibility with the renderer. Powers (talk) 20:38, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Missing license

I am uploading 39 BSicons, all in different colors. Due to the large load, I find it very time-consuming to upload them one at a time. I cannot use the Upload Wizard because it does not offer the correct license, {{PD-self}}. Is there an easier way to upload many files at once under a self-specified license? Fukuokakyushu2012 (talk) 15:02, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Actually, it is possible to use a custom license with the UploadWizard! But note that it was agreed to use {{PD-shape}} for BSicons. Also, lately we've been generally using {{AttribSVG}} for derived BSicons (like this). So, in UploadWizard at step two ("Release rights") you should choose "This file is not my own work.", enter {{AttribSVG|BSicon example.svg|author}} (or {{own}}) into "Source" and {{u|Fukuokakyushu2012}} into "Author(s)", and below that select "Another reason not mentioned above" and enter {{PD-shape}}. medal

can i upload a Picture of a world war 11 medal to see if any one can identify it? -- 16:04, 29 August 2014 User:Exdieguy

United States medals are certainly out of copyright, not sure about those of other countries. What language is the inscription? -- AnonMoos (talk) 20:10, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Choosing a license for an SVG recreation of a flag

I created an SVG image of this flag and want to upload it. I used the original file (which appears to be from vector-images.com) as a visual aid to create the SVG.

  1. Do I have to credit vector-images.com as an/the author?
  2. Can I choose an attribution-type license, or must the SVG be public domain, since the original doesn't appear to be copyrighted as per Russian law?

The discussion on the subject doesn't really help me, the only thing I have understood is that it seems to be complicated :-). --Rwchhs (talk) 19:52, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

As far as I can see, only the original small file uploaded in 2007 is sourced to the Vector-Images site, while the basic underlying flag design is uncopyrightable under Russian law. So if you ignore the small 2007 image when making your vector, then you don't have to mention Vector-Images at all... AnonMoos (talk) 20:08, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
