I have tried twice to move this file to Commons from English Wikipedia, and both times the upload failed with no explanation. I normally have no problem uploading files. Have you any idea what the difficulty may be? Thank you for your help. Vzeebjtf (talk) 06:57, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

License reviewers

I discovered that reviewers has enabled Commons:Upload Wizard/Flickr. I'm a member of Amical Wikimedia. We are working in a pilot project to engage members of Flickr's Community to take useful free licensed images for Wikimedia Commons. We sent two photographers (Angela Llop and Maria Rosa) to take photos of Can Papiol Romanticism Museum. It's a first phase with this GLAM agent. They uploaded different albums by CC-BY-SA in Flickr. The next step is upload these images to Wikimedia Commons. We would like to use this special "Upload Wizard/Flickr" to upload these photos. Probably, we will use it in projects coming, too. For that reason, I would like to become a reviewer. What can I do?--KRLS (talk) 16:02, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Should probably ask at place where Admins hang out, such as Commons:Administrators' noticeboard... -- AnonMoos (talk) 20:32, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Lieber Commons upload help

Vielen Dank--UrsL (talk) 19:46, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Consensus for some improvements to the Upload tools

Hi. Can I get some comments on the changes I suggested here a week ago?

I'm trying to improve the Upload tools to address problems that folks watching this page probably have to deal with a lot. Thanks. If there's consensus support for the changes, I'll get them implemented. --Elvey (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

pictures from wikiArt to wikiCommonsW

Hallo

I like to transport some pictures on Cubism from WikiArt to Wikicommoins because I need them to illustrate the Cubism page on WikiQuote. Some of the main Cubist first: Picasso and Braque. How can I do that without problemsc with copyright?

I can also try to find pictures, given bij museums if they are given under CC commons, can't I??

kind regards, FotoDutch (talk) 07:27, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Braque died in 1963, Picasso in 1973, meaning that it is likely that the overwhelming majority of their works cannot be uploaded to Commons. AnonMoos (talk) 22:47, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded JaimeHinckson.jpg and it was deleted due to copyright. I am the photographer of the image so I listed it as owned by me, however the image also appears on the website of said artist and I assume it was deleted because the website shows copyright Jaime Hinckson. If necessary I do not mind listing it as copyrighted by Jaime Hinckson since it also appears on his website. But can you please instruct me on how I can change the copright of that image that was deleted (or if I need to re-upload, how I can do so without the system alerting me that the content was previously uploaded and deleted)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DoubleHyphens (talk • contribs) 01:49, 6 June 2014‎ (UTC)

I believe the usual procedure is for the holder of the copyright to contact OTRS, certifying ownership and agreeing to release the material under a free licence (such as CC-BY-SA). They will restore a deleted file after checking the documentation, and attach a “ticket“ for future reference. As the photographer you are presumed to own the copyright, but if you have sold or otherwise transferred those rights to the website owner, rather than just granting permission for use, the request would have to come from him. Another option that may be available is to have the website changed to specify a free license for the photo, then request that the file be restored at COM:UNDEL with a link to the updated web-page.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:09, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

As far as I can see, it is not pubnlished under a free license, so probably no. See Commons:Licensing for information about what kind of licenses we accept. --El Grafo (talk) 08:39, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, seems so. But what does "Editorial Use Only" concrete mean? --Agaceri (talk) 10:38, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
It means that the ways in which the photo may be used are restricted. The exact restrictions implied by that term may depend on the jurisdiction in question, or they may not be clearly defined. What is clear is that it is not free to use for any purpose, including commercial purposes, as required by our licensing policy. LX (talk, contribs) 11:24, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
I may be wrong but I believe the words "Editorial Use Only" refer to the internal workings of the website in a similar way to forms which have a box which says "Office use only". As for licensing, the image should be assumed to be copyright and all rights reserved unless there is a clear and explicit free license on the same page as the image. If there is any doubt, the best way to find out is to look at the terms and conditions, which in this case include the following stipulations:
  • "limited, non-sublicensable, revocable license to access and use the Site"
  • "refrain from ... collection, copying or distribution ... resale, commercial use, commercial exploitation, distribution, public performance or public display ... modifying or otherwise making any derivative uses ... scraping, data mining, robots or similar data gathering or extraction methods."
Commons requires uploaded images to be free for any use, even commercial uses, so by default we cannot accept any image from Pixoto, unless it has a clearly applied free license. Green Giant (talk) 12:57, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Ok. Thank you for this clearing. --Agaceri (talk) 12:59, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Cannot overwrite file

I want to upload an edited version of File:Pornography laws.svg, but I am not allowed to overwrite the file. What can I do? --Satyr (talk) 05:27, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

If you’re trying to substitute a raster image for the existing vector file, that won‘t work. The best solution is to use a drawing program to make the changes, retaining the map’s present format for resolution-independence and future editability; failing that, upload the image separately, using the appropriate filename extension for the format it’s saved in.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:04, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

PNG/JPEG with same filename

Generally speaking, if I'm uploading a restoration, I'm going to want to upload a JPEG (as Wikipedia displays them better, as a rule), and a PNG (to allow further edits without loss). It used to be possible to do this with UploadWizard, but it now has an unoverideable check to prevent this.

Can we please have an override? Some of us know operfectly well what we're doing, and treating us like children who must be forced to obey rules that often - but not always are appropriate maakes your tool a hell of a lot less useful. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

If you're such an experienced power user, why are you dependent on Upload Wizard? -- AnonMoos (talk) 12:32, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
  1. It's the only way to upload files over 100 megabytes
  2. It can be a convenient batch uploader, if you more-or-less skip through the forms and then replace the file description pages.
  3. Did you even bother to check my user page before getting sarcastic, in which case you'd have seen I have hundreds of featured picture credits? Especially if you followed the suggested link to my en-wiki user page. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:31, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
You didn't say anything about the files being over 100 megs, and any tinge of sarcasm is due to my memories of years of whining about PNG sharpening, and certain other attitudes and negativities on your part... AnonMoos (talk) 05:12, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Given that having to upload as JPEG and PNG has so entered into Wikipedia's requirements that I've seen providing a PNG lossless version asked for at en-wiki FPC, but everyone was in complete agreement that PNG display is so terrible that it's a largely unusable file format for anything else, is it any wonder that people get upset? If Wikipedia wants to cripple a file format so that things that should be SVGs instead look better in it, I suppose Wikipedia has that right, but it's stupid actions on Wikipedia's part. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:20, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
For files > 100 MB, use User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js. The manual is at User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js. Note that you can change the file name so you will not overwrite an existing file. But you have to do so before selecting a file.

--Reneman (talk) 20:06, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

It's not really clear that the Flickr user has read the license and understood what they've agreed to. Based on the way your question was phrased, someone who is not familiar with the license may assume that the permission is only for use in Wikipedia, without realising that they're giving the whole world the right to use the photo for commercial purposes. If he is fine with that, it would be best to change the license on Flickr. That will also make it easier to upload it here and verify the license. LX (talk, contribs) 17:08, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

This page is for requesting help with uploading files to Commons, but it sounds like your question is about downloading. You can download the full resolution of File:Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony (3388009176).jpg by clicking on the preview (direct link). This file is 1800×1800 pixels, which will be 6×6 inches or 15.24×15.24 cm at 300 DPI (since 1800/300=6). The photo was sourced from Flickr, so no one here on Commons can provide you with a higher resolution version than that. LX (talk, contribs) 19:06, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Graph derived from data that should be cited

I have created a graph based on this data, which has citation information at the time; the parent page (here) says that it should be cited as "Reimer et al. (2013)". The full article is here.

I'd like to upload the graph with the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license, and I wanted to check that that's OK in this case. If I add to the description the full citation to Reimer et al.'s article in Radiocarbon, and clarify in the description the relationship between their data and this graph -- that is, that the graph is my work but the underlying data is not -- is that acceptable? I would include in the description the statement that anyone using this graph should cite Reimer et al. when doing so, as the underlying source. Mike Christie (talk) 02:34, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I expect that an attribution for the data would be just fine in either the Description or the Source field (the latter following “Own work, based on …“ or similar); you could also put it in EXIF metadata, if convenient. Referring to the authors in the Source field has the advantage of connecting them to the BY-SA provisions of the licence a bit more explicitly. Details of the construction should probably be in the Description field regardless.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:48, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks; I've uploaded the picture on that basis, though I didn't see a source field in the wizard. I put the information in the description field. I also just noticed that that issue of Radiocarbon says "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License", on this page. I assume that doesn't change anything; attribution is still required, right? Though I suppose it means that if they had produced a graph I wished to use, I could have uploaded it directly instead of reproducing it, so long as the attribution was preserved. Mike Christie (talk) 10:47, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Date of creation

Why hide the message "Date this work was created or first published (YYYY-MM-DD format)" behind a small help-button, in the upload form? Show it directly, to prevent exchanging date of creation of the Commons file (upload date) and date of creation of the original file. --Wickey-nl (talk) 11:46, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Probably because you're using the dumbed-down Commons:UploadWizard, which was pushed on us by people in the Wikimedia Foundation who don't use Commons on a daily basis or have any frequent interact with new or experienced Commons users. Even administrators on Commons aren't trusted to change the text of the UploadWizard, and the developers seem to have moved on to new and more exciting projects, because as far as I can tell they're not even fixing showstoppers (people have been reporting freezing issues like #Upload Wizard not working since it was introduced), let alone adjusting the instructions. New development is always more exciting than maintenance.
Not that I'm bitter or anything. ;-) I use Special:Upload, which Commons administrators do have control over, and which consequently doesn't hide the information in question (it looks like this). LX (talk, contribs) 07:47, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
@LX: I *think* we could edit this text (it's MediaWiki:Mwe-upwiz-date-created) but we would have to care for the translations and it would look slightly cluttered if repeated for all uploads. Can I upload them to wikimedia commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luis Fernando Escobar Arango (talk • contribs) 15:58, 29 June 2014‎ (UTC)

Yes, please forward the permission to com:OTRS and wait for their response. --McZusatz (talk) 16:54, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
No, you cannot upload the images to Commons if the permission only covers your use in an article on the subject. It's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Therefore, you will need the heirs' permission to publish the images under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and distribute them for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Full instructions for how to obtain a suitable permission are at Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 18:54, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
