Revision#0 does not exist error

Hi, all. Been absent for a while and haven't been active at Commons, but I'm perplexed by this error I received when the submission of file data through the upload wizard stalled perhaps due to a lapse in my connection to the internet. Instead of waiting, I exited the page and tried to re-upload File:Dipodium varigatum fruit.jpg (needs a page move anyway to correct the name of the species to variegatum -- oops). If I try to edit the file to insert the summary data and categories, it tells me there's an edit conflict and the history is blank. Any admins out there capable of just deleting it so I can upload under the correct name if that's the easiest solution? Much appreciated, Rkitko (talk) 00:46, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

I also need help from an administrator. After making the mistake of hitting the back button while uploading two files, File:Cypripedium acaule - Pink Lady's Slipper 2.jpg and File:- Pink Lady's Slipper 3.jpg, in an attempt to fix the title of second one to "Cypripedium acaule - Pink Lady's Slipper 3", they both uploaded without the summary section, and without the licensing section with my Creative Commons license. They also have some text on them in Spanish. If I try to edit them, I get the "Revision #0 does not exist" error. If I try to nominate them for deletion, I get another error message, saying;

"An error occurred while trying to do the requested action. To nominate this file for deletion, please edit the page to add the delete template and follow the instructions shown on it. A detailed description of the error is shown below: The page you are attempting to add a tag to was deleted or moved. Unable to retrieve the content. Error".

I tried to upload the files again, but it wouldn't let me, because it says they already exist. Can an administrator please help me by deleting these screwed up files, so that I can upload them again correctly? I don't want my photos up here without my name and my Creative Commons license. I am trying to upload a new picture on a Wikipedia page. I was able to add the photo but when I tried to change the current one the original was deleted from the home page. Image on Murat Ses Wiki Page

From what I can tell, Nicolesteans uploaded File:Murat Ses at Dalí Museum.jpg on 2014-02-07. Rapsar nominated the file for deletion on 2014-02-21, giving "Copyright violation" as the rationale. Nicolesteans did not comment on the deletion nomination. Steinsplitter deleted the file on 2014-02-28. According to Google's cached copy of the file description, Nicolesteans stated that he or she got the file from https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10201273034454551 and that the author was ÖpBe aka Nihal Ses. Based on your user name, I'm guessing that's you. The file description on Facebook now mentions the cc-by-sa license. I don't know whether that was the case when the file was deleted, but if it wasn't, that may have been the reason for the deletion nomination and deletion. That said, there is another copyright problem with the photo. The photo prominently features a famous copyrighted photograph of Salvador Dalí by Willy Rizzo as well as several copyrighted Dalí paintings. That means that this photo, being a derivative of those works, cannot be published under a free license without the original copyright holders' approval. If you are the author of this photo, you may upload a cropped version that does not include works by other authors. Is this a question about uploading files to Commons? You'll need to have an account and be logged in to do that. Photo deleted, can't upload again

I'm not precisely sure what I did wrong, but the photograph I uploaded for the Rod Humphries infobox has been deleted. I tried to upload it again, but got the message that a file with the same content had been deleted, after which I wasn't allowed to proceed. The deleted file is at: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rod_Humphries.jpg

Do note that the permission has to come from the copyright holder. This is normally the author of the photograph. The author of a photograph is the person holding the camera and creating the photograph. It's not the person appearing in the photo, unless it's a "selfie." —LX (talk, contribs) 16:39, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

In the case of that particular photograph, I believe (though I'm not certain) that the author of the photograph is his wife Lynne. What I'm confused about is why the photo was deleted in the first place. I'm not contesting the deletion (yet), but before I do I'd like to be able to understand what was written when it was deleted. I don't understand the comment that accompanied it. User:Beingmarkh

The file's log shows two events: the upload and the deletion. The description you gave when it was uploaded has been truncated, but it ends with "Evidence: The license agreement will be forw..." The rest of that phrase is "...arded to OTRS shortly." It means that in step 3 of the English Wikipedia's Upload Wizard, you've selected the options "This is a free work", "This file was given to me by its owner" and "The license hasn't yet been forwarded, but I will do so shortly or ask the owner to send it himself." When you do that, the file is tagged with a dated {{OTRS pending}} tag. If you did not send anything in, or if what you sent in wasn't processed in time (which can unfortunately happen, because the volunteers that handle licensing permissions submitted via e-mail often struggle with a big backlog), the file would have been tagged for deletion and then deleted. The other possible scenario I can think of is that you did send something in, but it wasn't enough to confirm a valid permission (for example, because it wasn't given the right person), and perhaps you didn't respond when asked to follow up. Whatever the case, I'd say the best way forward is to obtain a permission from the photographer in the format shown at Commons:OTRS and send it in. After that, if everything checks out, the file will be restored with no further action needed on your behalf. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:36, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Sometimes, when I click on "Upload a new version of this file", I want to indicate why I have amended the image by linking to a discussion about that image. For example, the discussion might be at Talk:BSicon/New icons and icon requests#Request for new pictograms. If I put [[Talk:BSicon/New icons and icon requests#Request for new pictograms]] into the "File changes:" box, it links just fine when I view the File history on Commons, as here; but if I view the File history at Wikipedia, it's a redlink, as here. I tried using an interwiki prefix, i.e. [[:commons:Talk:BSicon/New icons and icon requests#Request for new pictograms]] and that worked when viewing the File history at Wikipedia, see here, but now it shows as a redlink when viewing the File history on Commons, see here. It's the same whether I use the colon at the start of the link or omit that colon.

I think it's simply a bug in MediaWiki; the comment should be always parsed as if it would be on Wikimedia Commons if the files is loaded from Commons. I can't offer a solution except creating redirects on Commons (which is also bad and they're possibly going to be deleted by some clean-up worker). If c is adopted as shortcut for Wikimedia Commons, using that could possibly solve the problem as that wouldn't be interpreted as the Commons(/Project)-Namespace. -- Rillke^(q?) 15:41, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

I would like to contribute writing a page about a well known person in Ecuador, I also can upload a picture of a person who is already in Wikipedia without a one.

I would like to make the page about 'Daniel Leon Borja', if you write his name on the net, you will find that there are monuments, schools and avenues named after him, but there is no page either in Spanish nor in English about him, he was my father and there are several biographies written about him, some shorter, some longer, I have several books where he is mentioned. Even though he was humble about himself, he was a great man who worked and did a lot for his city, his province and his country. He graduated as a medical doctor and a surgeon as the best in his class, but a few years later he left his profession to dedicate himself to helping others, he was a 'Deputy' (not as in English) 'Diputado' for the Province of Chimborazo(House of Representatives) for 6 periods, he was the Mayor of Riobamba for two periods, his last job before he passed away was Secretary of State as 'Ministro de Recursos Naturales' (Secretary of Natural Resources: Oil, industrial Fishing, etc). I could make his page in Spanish, English and French.

I would also like to upload a picture to the page 'Ernesto Albán' about Ernesto Albán Mosquera, the picture is from my photo album, taken by myself. I see that Wikipedia has a picture of young Ernesto Albán in the English page, but there is no picture in the Spanish page and that is where I would want to upload it. Ernesto Albán Mosquera was in-law family to my son and myself: he was my daughter in-law's grand-father, he still is a very dear person to Ecuadorean Theatre people and it is a shame not to have a picture in his Spanish page.

Could you help me by letting me know how to go about this? last time I saw a picture was needed about someone there was a place that said how to upload a picture, this time I don't see how to do it.

Hi Irene! If you have a photo that you've created that you're willing to publish under a free license, that's great. You can upload the file by going to Special:UploadWizard or Commons:Upload (there should be a link in the menu on the left-hand side) and follow the instructions there. To upload the photo, you will have to agree to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use it in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. (Reusers will of course still be legally bound to respect the depicted person's personality rights.)

As for creating articles on Wikipedia, you really should ask at each respective Wikipedia edition if you have questions about that, but as you are thinking about writing about a family member, the first thing they'll probably tell you to do is to read en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/es:Wikipedia:Conflicto de intereses/fr:Wikipédia:Conflit d'intérêts. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:31, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Revising an existing file

Hi,

I would like to try and revise this diagram being used in the Wikipedia article Tsumeshogi. My reasons for doing so are given on the article's talk page. Basically, the notation used for one of the pieces in this problem is rather old and not commonly used longer. Moreover, the diagram currently uses kanji numerals to designate the ranks of a shogi board, which is correct in a Japanese sense, but does not really work as well in English article. This file is a revision of this which also uses kanji numerals, which is still a problem, but which does use the right symbol for the piece in question. Not sure why it was changed because the revised version is not really an improvement over the original.

So, my questions are as follows:

1. Can I copy this file to my computer and make the changes that I feel are necessary?
2. How should I upload my version? Should I treat it as a completely new file (i.e., my own work)? Should I upload it to it's existing page?
3. What things, if any, need to be referenced in the description page of my version?
4. Is there a special template I need to use?
5. Does a revision of a revision still need to reference the original file?

1. Yes. Please use the SVG file and edit this one with a vector graphic program like Inkscape (open source and free) or Adobe Illustrator, of if you have sufficient knowledge, edit the SVG source code which is just like a XML file. Help:SVG provides you with valuable resources on SVG editing.
2. Please upload your new version under a new name. COM:OVERWRITE is our policy covering your case.
3. The files and authors of the original version must be referenced. Note that you have to make your file CC-By-SA 3.0 (or any later version) because you'll derive it from a file carrying this license and CC-By-SA is a copyleft license.
4. Yes, use {{Derived from}}.
5. You may simply use Derivative FX. Upload won't work but it will create the text for the file description page. Copy that and paste it into the upload form, add your file and submit.

1. Create your file using your preferred image editor. Use the exactly the same blue as used for other countries. Save in png file format.
2. Go to the upload page.
3. Describe your changes in the summary/File changes field. Add the source where you found that brazil has diplomatic relations with mongolia. In the end, you could have something in the box like Coloring mongolia in blue because it now has diplomatic relations with brazil: http://example.com/?articleId=k3kls93j where the link is your source of proof. If you do not provide reliable evidence, I will revert your change.

The map is described as Map of diplomatic missions of Brazil not as Map of diplomatic missions in Brazil. And at List of diplomatic missions of Brazil it becomes even more obvious: States hosting a diplomatic mission of Brazil. Honorary consulates are being excluded from the list but it appears that Ms. Khulan Zumbee is Honorary Consulate in Mongolia and I cannot find any other source, preferably by the Brazilian government confirming the status of Mr Bayasgalan Amgalam as a Consul. I could not find any information in Portuguese about an Embassy of Mongolia here in Brazil as news or something like that. But, if you have these sources...

From researching government sources and checking for news articles on the web, it seems that Mongolia intends to open an embassy in Brazil, however, it is not yet opened. Brazil does not have an embassy in Mongolia. The map in question that User:Naksh wishes to change would be the wrong map. Rule of thought; just because a nation has diplomatic relations with another nation does not mean that both nations would have an embassy in each other's country. "Bad token"

Hi, I just tried to upload 2 photos, and an internal error message came up, stating "bad token." I'm wondering about what that means? Is there a problem on Wiki right now with the uploader? @Daniellagreen: if this happens again, deletion of all cookies from *.wikimedia.org, logging out and logging in again should fix the problem. It is the same as when "your edit could not be saved due to session loss" (or similar; I don't know whether you've ever seen that) is shown when editing "normal pages".

The "token" prevents drive-by edits and uploads if you are browsing other pages. It is there for security but it expires sometimes or some servers in the Wikimedia-Cluster are not "aware" of your current token.

If this happens more frequently, please report here because this usually means that there is an issue in the server-cluster (like broken database-replication). -- Rillke^(q?) 14:30, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

About uploading picture

If it was deleted, the person who deleted it thought that it was not in the public domain. By default, all photographs are copyrighted by whoever took them. Unless you took the picture yourself, how do you know it is in the public domain? --rimshot^talk 18:31, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Donated photos

Hello! I once worked at "Arbetarrörelsens Arkiv", Landskrona, Sweden. All their documents and photos are public. The retired photographer Bertil Persson had (a long time ago, before "my time", which also was a while ago) donated his archive to this archive. His intention was a hope that some of the photos will become useful in the future. I cannot see otherwise than this equals what today is labeled as "public domain" (but not for further commercial use). I found a "liecence tag" that seems to be correct for this type. But the upload didn't work. Photo in question is a shot of former Swedish national football (soccer) manager Georg "Åby" Ericsson at the Cup final in Sweden 1972. He was national manager from after the World Cup in Mexico 1970, until 1979, and took Sweden to the World Cups 1974 (where Sweden finished as no 5) and 1978, which was not that successfull, but a 1:1 draw towards Brazil in the opening game was of cource concidered "well done" in Sweden. There is no doubt that Bertil Perssons donated photos are not to be concidered as free domain, with only restriction that others may not benefit economically from them. Why is this so troublesome ? And how should I procede at the upload in order to get the photo in question uploaded ? Thankfull for all serious replies. Boeing720 (talk) 01:51, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

I cannot tell you why the upload didn't succeed but even if it would, you were not permitted to upload because commercial use must be allowed for the content you upload to Wikimedia Commons. One reason is that it is extremely difficult to distinguish between commercial and non-commercial use. Unfortunately, UploadWizard has not automatic debugging-tools on board and large parts of it run in your browser. All you can do is to open your JavaScript console/ developer tools and look whether there are XHRs sent and whether they succeed or whatever happens to them. I can tell you what UpWiz does but it won't really help you: If you enter a custom license tag, it traverses up the category tree for each template inserted and if it encounters category:License tags, it will pass the upload; otherwise it refuses to upload. The issue is that it only steps up 5 category-levels. If you add [[Category:License tags]] to {{PD-UKGov}}, it might work. -- Rillke^(q?) 23:50, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Bug in Special:UploadWizard - refuses to take legitimate JPEG files

Apparently file names 1358203843-1003155-www.nevsepic.com.ua.jpg or 3185a007a7a8889a65c38bfbb0562995.jpg make Special:UploadWizard think the files are of some exotic file format and refuses to take them, claiming the file type is not allowed on Commons. Upload wizard doesn't get past 'describe' section

The upload wizard works smoothly until I reach the boundary between 'describe' and 'use.' I then get an endless hour glass, with 'submitting details and publishing' at lower left. The upload wizard never advances to 'use.'

This has happened in Firefox, Chrome and Opera.

On the bright side: when I log out and log back in, my just-uploaded files show on the 'upload' page. Still, it would be nice to see the wizard complete, as it has in the past.

You asked the question yesterday at Commons:Upload Wizard feedback#Hanging after 'describe' page. To find what you've written and uploaded, just look into your contributions: There is a link Contributions next to the log out link. As for the problem: Please upload your photos in JP(E)G file format: It's lossy, true, but the most suitable file format for photos. If you camera produces JPEG, there is only little gain if you convert it to PNG — see Help:JPEG for reference. I know I'd far rather work with a 16 bit file when editing photos, and want to practice the golden rule by providing the same on wikimedia. The upload wizard has accepted big .pngs many times in the past without complaint. -- 01:57, 26 March 2014 Tim Adams

If you mean PNGs with 16 bits per channel, that's a rather specialized format, not recommended for general photos on Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 07:01, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

It means that an existing or existing-but-previously-deleted file is an exact byte-for-byte match. You can check the "Ignore all warnings" box to get around this in some cases, but most of the time you should not do so... AnonMoos (talk) 06:53, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Deleted Photo

Hi Wikimedia Commons, I uploaded a photo of a public person (Jimmy Chamberlin) which was a personal photo and thus fit under the wikimedia commons rules. However, it was deleted from his Wikipedia page. How can I re-upload this image and get it back on his page? The photo in question is File:Jimmy Chamberlin Headshot.jpg. The page linked to in the deletion log message and in the message on your user talk page that preceded the deletion, Commons:OTRS, contains the information you need. Upload file tool tells me these images are corrupt

Hello, I am attempting to upload these ([1] [2] [3] [4] [5]) files from flickr, however the Upload tool brings up the error message "This file might be corrupt, or have the wrong extension" for each. Any help would be appreciated. -Fandraltastic (talk) 19:03, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
